Hate Church Targets Comic-Con

Westboro Baptist Church, the notorious "Gods Hates Fags" congregation out of Kansas, will be in San Diego next week to rain down 45 minutes of eternal and inconsequential damnation upon your idolatrous worship of Spider-Man and Green Lantern.

This appears to be an opportunistic double, as the same day the same group is scheduled to picket a San Diego hotel where Al Gore is, I guess, staying. The "action" is listed for July 22 on the group's schedule of events:

Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.

Wait a minute, you mean Batman's not a legitimate diety?

After accomplishing nothing in San Diego, Westboro's back to ruining some military funerals in the greater Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri area, before two dates on July 28 and August 3 to bitch about Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga ... hmm ... the enemy of my enemies is my ... fuck it, they're all enemies.

Lets not forget the imaculate virgin wonderwoman

I cannot wait for the day you stop coming to Kotaku and spewing forth utter random tripe in the comments section.

Is my immaculate conception sense tingling?
Or has satan placed dinosaur DNA in a mosquito here to test us?!

        I can.

wow "Fedup", that was a really dick comment. Can we not have the Kotaku community turning into trashy fighting like the Youtube comments section :|

Well said Fedup! I used to love reading the comments on Kotaku...

Sorry to have inconvenienced you Matthew and potentially tarnished your time here on Kotaku.

Thank you for your comment - i'll be sure to take your valuable criticism on board - pity, however, that you wouldn't use your actual posting name to say such a thing.

I certainly hope you take the criticism on board and stop with your idiotic nonsense, but somehow I highly doubt that you will. I could probably go through every Australian article on this site and quote you for some stupid, useless comment you have made.

You probably could - but that time may be better invested in developing a sense of humor.

Listen, i love Kotaku, and i like the people on here. I also like the fact that it is almost complete devoid of trolls... well until now that is.

I rather enjoy my posts, as do many others. My comments are usually something to do with the topic matter, even if deviated for my own satirical reasons. But that's just me. I like to have fun and enjoy myself. Last time i checked that's not a crime.

Lastly, i always tend to respect the people on this site and can't actually think of a time i've spoken ill about someone, even when my views differ completely from what they have to say, constructive or otherwise. I suggest you do the same.

This will be the last i say on this matter as i refuse to be drawn into a pathetic string of slander on a public message board.

Once again, i am sorry if you do not get any enjoyment from the things i say, but you can always just skim past my posts once you see the name "chuloopa" and save yourself the pain.

Someone seems to have completely missed the definition of "satire"

Oh wait that requires a form of intelligence to pick up. Carry on then

On a side note.. lol first post xD

Loops is practically a hero-figure to many people on these 'forums'.

Usually on topic, usually polite, usually funny. Exactly what is wanted and expected for the Kotaku comments. Hell, Wildgoose himself seems to like him.

So, let's quit the bashing, yeah? If you don't like it, just ignore it.

sorry Chuloopa but since you wrote all that back I have to say:
              successful troll is successful.
next time just ignore that needledick

              Chuloopa +1
Keep em up bro (or sis???) I know always find them entertaining.

Geez Fedup, you make me feel like I'm on IGN.

Even if it is stupid and useless, does it even matter? Last I checked, this wasn't a serious academic website. Its a site where people see some gaming news and have a laugh. Loosen up and don't be unaustralian.

        God hates you

how come people say jesus loves you and god hates you. why not jeseus hates you and god loves you?

          i don't get it...

You could, I don't know, possibly just ignore his comments?

I'm not one to think about 'defiling' gods, but oh man, Wonderwoman. *drools*

I want that sign so bad.

Those people need to be bashed, roll up in a ute jump out and stomp them a few times. Then see how often they protest.

"start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry"
Problem is their god only saves them after they're dead, so there's no proof they are at all.
I really like how they insult us for enjoying a good story when they actualy belive stories. The only difference is theirs are nubered by verse, while ours have pictures.

Why oh why do we have people like the idiots at Westboro? They are the only ones that make the news, so that is what anyone thinks of when they think Christian is intolerance like this.

Also, the sign doesn't make much sense. The verse they pointed out was Romans 9:13 "Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."". Jacob was the nerd of the family, Esau the hunter of the family.

Agree. Fanatic ruin it for everyone and give anyone says that they are a Christian a bad name...

Only the crazy one's make the news - not all of us are like this!

Agreed. As a christian and a nerd myself, I think it's clear that Fred Phelps hasn't failed in his exegetical study of the bible. God loves nerds. I certainly felt the most comfortable in my nerdiness when I became a Christian. After all, when you know that the creator of the universe loves you as you are for all your eccentricities and everything that the world may think of as strange, who really cares what anyone else thinks of you? :)

Oops, sorry, type in the above comment. "hasn't" should be "has"

    God hates fundamentalists.

And Fedup. He probably hates him, too.

Woah they ruin military funerals too? Thos esick bastards!

Yeah you should check it out on youtube - they are seriously messed up - i saw a TV special based on them. They basically protest at funerals with signs saying about how the soldiers are going to hell.. It's some seriously nasty stuff.
It baffles my mind how a group of people who are so adamant in adherence to the bible can be so full of hate.

Isn't the quote "Judge not lest ye be judged" also in the bible somewhere...

Wasn't that a Louis Theroux documentary? Because I think I saw that one too... Most Hated Family in America or something like that.

Yep, that's the one - that guy has endless patience. He makes some good doccos, that much is certain.

Does anyone else feel like sticking the fanatics/extremists of every religion (well, maybe every religion that makes the news for having extremists that go too far) on this planet into one room and locking the door? For science of course....oh wait, these guys probably hate science as well. Ok then, for fun.

Quoting Yahtzee: You can't beat Batman, "The second most capable fictional character in history, after Christ".

*generic agreement with previous comments about them being nutjobs who are NOT preaching Gods love*

I find it slightly funnier how much attention (and thus "credit") they're given by the media.

The fact that the passage referenced in that image ROM 9:13 makes no sense
"Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.""

Westboro are just jealous because they couldn't pull this off:

    Suck it, Freddy!

My imaginary friend is better than their imaginary friend.

If I were the church mentioned in this article I would love that my publicity stunts were having an impact and being reported on Kotaku before I even went to a protest.

Maybe Kotaku should be more careful with who they give free publicity to. By covering them you are only giving more power to them.

as if any religious people can be trusted. they are all clearly nuts. unless they are the 'i don't really believe it but my wife likes to" sort of religious person. keeping peace with the missus, gotta respect that. the rest of them can bite me!

You really think they'd love nerds... because there's almost no chance we're going to have pre-marital sex.

Yeah, but then we go and ruin it all by buying this...

Next time these guys are all at their church, someone should spay them all with a sterilising agent so that they can't breed.

At least the next generation won't have to put with this bullshit.

Shit like this and the picketing of soldiers' funerals shows that the Hillsboro people are just trolls looking for a publicity hit. They feed off this crap and make millions from doing so. Rational people need to ignore them, denying them exposure, though I'm sure there are plenty tempted to violence.

To a certain extent, WBC has a point (hear me out people!) in that comic book characters are, kind of, 'worshipped' by the fans.

A heroic character is meant to be the embodiment of something good; a reification/concretization of a certain set of values/principles.

In a way, superhero teams are modern-day pantheons; each member fills in the role for being the "god" of some set of abstract concepts.

Back in the ancient world, polytheistic religions came about because people personified features of the world around them... volcanoes became represented by Vulcan, thunder by Zeus, etc.

So, in that way, modern comic book characters are indeed analagous to the pantheons of old.

Where I disagree with WBC is their moral evaluation of this. I don't think that it is bad for people to reify things they admire and turn them into characters for use in fiction.

    Thor > Jesus.

    That is all.
