Link Is Silent, And Nintendo Wants To Keep It That Way

One of the enduring appeals of Link, hero of The Legend Of Zelda series, has been the fact that he's mute. You can't spoil a man's character with bad writing when he never speaks!

As technology marches onwards, though, some people may expect Link to make like the characters from other long-time mute series like Final Fantasy, and begin to speak. Well, Nintendo is having none of it.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has told Nintendo Power "Personally, I don't want to have Link speak in the game. We haven't had him talk at all up to this point. It's part of the series history. It would just, to me, break the image of Link to have him speak."

Yes, he's grunted, but aside from a certain television series, has never opened his mouth. And since, like Half-Life's Gordon Freeman, that's part of what makes him such a memorable character, let's hope that's the way it stays.

    "Well, Excuuuuuuuuse me Princess!"

Given the extremely small chance they'll pick a voice that will be universally accepted, I would prefer they don't.

My game boy didn't need him speaking, my Wii doesn't either.

I think it's an exceptionally large part of the character, and his respective universes charm.

I really like the dancing mario they had at the end of the show. It's like they found some fat homeless guy who had a moustache and made him dance for a sandwich.

Seeing as we are still given the option to name "Link", my assumption was always that it is to personalise the protagonist. You name him, whether after yourself, or your pet dog, or your secret man-crush... (Stephen Fry for me *swoon*) and it means more.

The "..." of Link's responses always subbed for the player's own thoughts- which are as varied as the myriad people who play Zelda games- as well as reinforcing him as a man-boy of action rather than words... yadda yadda yadda.

He's spoken in games before, the CDi Zelda games.

Though all it does is add more reasoning to keeping Link silent. *Shudder*

Since when were characters mute in Final Fantasy? o_O Right from the first game all they seemed to do is talk and fight :P

I like the idea of a Zelda game with voice action, albeit a made up Hylian language...

Heres a twist. Make them speek Simlion. EA will eather have a fit, or go 'Cross PRMO HUT DUR Sims 4 HUR DUR'

"Gee it sure is boring around heeerrree"

I don't care if link talks, but can the other charecters get voice acting?
