Retro City Rampage Is The GTA The 80s Never Had

If Grand Theft Auto had been released in 1988, it would have looked a lot like, well, this.

Designed as an 8-bit parody of not just GTA's open-world gameplay, but of 80s culture itself, Retro City Rampage looks great. Fast, and something that'll give me a headache, but great.

It'll be playable at PAX10 in September, and if you can't make it to that, developers Vblank say it'll be out by the end of the year on WiiWare.

The underwater portion of the video gave me some crazy TMNT flashbacks.

Isn't that the turtle van about 1/3 of the way in??? (Can't see the play times on this player... what's wrong with youtube luke?)

Reminds me of the first GTA

remember the soundtrack from GTA1? lets go for a joy ride!

So many references in that one tiny trailer.

"I am (null)" and the "Scrumm Bar" (reference to both Scrum development and SCUMM Bar in one :)

The "I am (null)" is a reference to The Adventures of Link (Zelda II for NES) "I am Error".

I also saw Double Dragon, Bionic Commando, Contra, Battletoads and Metal Gear references (all NES; ah my childhood!)

And 'Nolans Arcade', and 'The impossible Machine(ry), just that tiny vid is a geek reference wunderland.

    looks like camping.....

    intense

"YOU'RE ON FIRE! QUICK SET EVERYBODY ELSE ON FIRE"

    Fantastic

Skate n 'Buy', Sneaky Snake box & Crate, Baja Gaiden, Lunch Out... too funny.
