Scott Pilgrim's Debut Looks Even Worse With Context

The first weekend box office earnings for game-infused movie Scott Pilgrim looked bad in isolation. Place them next to other gaming movies' debuts and they look even worse.

This chart shows the opening weekend take for video game movies in the United States. As you'd expect, Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat and Prince of Persia are up the top. But where's Scott Pilgrim? Well, he's further down... down below, well... Max Payne, below Hitman, below Doom and below... Gamer.

Yes, Gamer - the Gerard Butler vehicle that was as awful as it was forgettable - enjoyed a better opening weekend than Scott Pilgrim. Going to show that an awful movie with a dreamy frontman will beat a decent movie with the kid from Arrested Development any day of the week.

Scott Pilgrim vs. Game Films: Topped by Doom, Max Payne [Destructoid]

To be fair, Scott Pilgrim is a long way from being a video game adaption.

I agree. I think this theory was a little misguided. As far as I'm aware Scott Pilgrim is a movie based on a comic book which references video games. There is a world of difference between a movie which references video games and a movie which takes place in the world of a video game franchise.

Scott Pilgrim can only hope to bring with it the fans from the comic book. Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat and co. bring with them the fans of the video game franchise, which is a lot more than the comic book will ever have.

Very disappointing, but I guess that's what happens when you make a cult movie for a very specific audience. Hopefully this will see a resurgence in DVD sales, like a lot of cult classics do.

Does anyone know how well the game sold?

Alone in the Dark, leading man: "Uwe Boll".

    the wizard.....!

I liked Gamer. Also Isn't Scott Pilgrim based on a comic and not a game so you should be comparing it to other comic based movies like Watchmen, Ironman and Batman or would that make people who like Scott Pilgrim more depressed?

Mass-appeal action movies make more money than quirky niche titles? I am shocked. Shocked!

Don't look at me I saw it twice at my local dump cinema.

In defence though is it reeeeeally a game movie as opposed to a comic book movie? A lot more people have played Doom and Residen Evil than have read Scott Pilgrim.

Still, that's so depressing I can't even put it into words. I really, really liked Scott Pilgrim and easily tied it with Inception as the two best movies of the year for me.

Yes, they are my top two movies so far too!

I wounder how far down the list it would be if it was compared to ALL movies, not just Gaming themed movies....

    Poor marketing perhaps?
I've heard a few Americans saying that some of the TV spots were really miss-leading, making it look like another Micheal Cera indie flick, and leaving out the action side of it.

Oh God No! Not lower than the Street Fighter and Super Mario Bros. movies! nononononoNoNoNoNoNoNONONONOONOONOONONOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! *sniffle* *whimper* *cry*

Lora Croft? Is that some dodgy rip off of that Lara Croft movie?

To be fair, I wouldn't even know what the hell the film was about, if I didn't read Kotaku. I'm a gamer and I'd never heard of Scott Pilgrim before it was mentioned here.
    I also love Arrested Development.
On top of all that, I'm still not really interested in seeing this film. Maybe on DVD. It basically looks (from TV ads) like Michael Cera playing the same role as always, crossed with looking like that godawful live action Dragonball film.

    So colour me unsurprised.

I will go see it again, maybe 2 more times its an awesome movie and people are clearly stupid.

well its better that they made a great movie (i can't wait to see it) and not be the biggest box office smash of all time than "sell-out" and make a crappy movie and make everyone angry.

although its Edgar Wright so it couldn't go too wrong.

Why is Kotaku so obsessed with this movie? I don't think I've ever seen a movie get more articles on here than Scott Pilgrim. If it's really that crap, why keep writing about it?

Well its not crap, so I guess thats why they keep writing about it.

      Sales =/= quality.

Inception got a ton of artcles too

      Both are excellent movies

seriously i hadnt even known about this scott pilgram stuff until last week when kotaku was talking nonstop about it.

Disappointing. It deserved a much better opening. The movie is amazing, I've seen it 3 times.

Lora Croft must be from the same people as PoP: Sands in Time.

All I can think of now is Days of Our Lives after reading that.

Okay - Look at it as this - What would people see with Tomb Raider? Not a game-made-movie - They see Angelina Jolie's tits and an action movie.
Mortal Kombat - Again, action film. Prince of Persia - Adventure film, backed up with PoTC producer's reputation.

Scott Pilgrim was a failure in the box office not due to a failing in its delivery to its target audience - But a failing in its delivery to absolutely anyone but.

Also - How do you sell it? Tomb Raider, you can tell people it's an action movie starring Angelina Jolie's nipples and people will see it on those grounds. One thing I struggled with when organising a group of friends to go see Scott Pilgrim with was answering their question "What's it about". Because there's no way you can, in your answer, describe the fantastically humorous, sincere yet satirical method in which "Scott Pilgrim defeats the 7 evil exes of his now girlfriend", WHILST endearing it.

So...Scott Pilgrim is a wonderous thing - But a terrible concept. And because you see a movie based on its concept/trailer - It is clear as to why the concept of "Tits and guns" wins over "They're young adults who punch eachother".

I liked the movie, I like the comics, but I do think Michael Cera was the wrong guy to be the main character. That being said I can't think of who would be right.

I also do not hate him, I just don't think he was right for the part. I do think most of the other characters more or less worked.

what we need to do is start something on 4chan to promote the movie.

Let's just have a look at the scores on imdb

    Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 5.3
    Mortal Kombat 5.4
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time 6.9
    Silent Hill 6.5
    Resident Evil 6.4
    Max Payne 5.4
    Doom 5.2
    Super Mario Bros. 3.8
    Hitman 6.2
    Street Fighter 3.3
    Gamer 5.7
    The Wizard 5.6
    Alone in the Dark 2.3
    Double Dragon 3.3

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World 8.3

That means that it is the 72nd-111th Top movie on IMDB (It hasn't been added yet, since it's still playing at the cinema)

Seems that one stands out very clearly.

That's what you get for casting Michael Sera... Awesome movie, even though he just annoyed me.

FAIL what's up with Lara Croft being spelt wrong?? "Lora" >_>
