Steam Performance On Macs Improved By 15-120%

It's great news that Steam is now available on Mac, but some users have been upset that performance isn't quite as smooth as it is on PC. Maybe this latest update will help!

Since the service launched on Mac earlier this year, Valve has been working with Apple to "close the performance gap" between games on PC and those on Apple's computers. Today, a Mac OSX update coupled with some tweaks on Valve's end means that gap has been made a lot smaller.

Valve says performance on the following Macs are now enjoying framerate increases of between 15-120%:

iMac (Late 2009 and Mid 2010), Mac mini (Early 2009 and Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009), MacBook (Early 2009 and Mid 2010) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) and MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010)

If your Mac isn't listed there? Older machines are SOL, as Valve reckon "we are generally already operating at the limits of the hardware, so it is not obvious that any significant performance improvements can be achieved in the future".

Ummm I think the heading of this article is a little off. They're referring to enhancements to the MAC build of the Source engine... not the Steam application. I'm pretty sure Steam itself didn't need a 120% frame rate increase.

    20 ~ 130% increase of 20FPS average still isn't that much..

      20 FPS + 120% = 20*220% = 20*2.2 = 44.
That's turning from unplayable to smooth. I'd say that's considerable.

Still, 20 FPS + 15% = 23, so not quite as significant at the other end of the spectrum.

It is just a shame that no matter how good of a job Value does at improving the performance of these games, the person playing them is still using a Mac.

Man Macs are awesome specially the 27" iMac. If your going to say something negative then dont say anything at all.

Hopefully this update improves the smoothness of the steam application as brousing the store is very choppy.
