What Kind Of Software Do PC Gamers Have Installed On Their Rigs?

The first of Valve's new software survey results are in, and they provide a fascinating insight into the kind of crap the service's users have installed on their PCs.

The company's surveys have long been a great source of general information on what's popular amongst hardcore PC gamers on the hardware side of things, but the July 2010 results for the first time also show what kinds of software these gamers have installed on their computers.

Steam, obviously, is installed on 100% of computers, what with it being mandatory to access Steam. But after that the commonality of programs drops off remarkably. Only 96.79% of users have flash, where you'd expect that to be 100%, while the next most popular piece of software was Adobe's PDF reader Acrobat at 73.18%.

Firefox is king of the browsers at 63.05%, WinRAR is the most popular archiving tool at 45.28% and Microsoft will be pleased that its Flash competitor, Silverlight, is installed on 53.13% of responding user's PCs.

On the surprising side, nearly 70% of users don't have iTunes installed, over 70% of don't have µTorrent installed, and chat program Xfire had penetration of only 10.54%.

You can see the full software results alongside Valve's regular hardware results at the link below. Mac users note, they're PC-only at the moment, with Mac survey results "coming soon".

Steam Hardware & Software Survey: July 2010 [Valve]

I find it surprising that the only antivirus packages on the list are avast 16%, Eset 8.8%, Norton 1.8%. That leaves a whole heaps of systems with no antivirus (unless they aren't detecting some common packages).

I am proud to be one of the 70% that doesn't have iTunes installed. I have had viruses that haven't screwed up my PC as much as Apple software (on Windows) does.

I second that. The most annoying thing about itunes is all the auto-update popups that try to install MORE apple software (like their terrible safari browser).

And how it changes all your preferences without asking...

" I have had viruses that haven’t screwed up my PC as much as Apple software (on Windows) does."

It is SO sad that this is SO true.

I don't find the 70% of users not having iTunes installed surprising at all. First of all, those numbers are from the PC users only (not the mac users), who play PC gamers and use microsoft platforms.

why is it surprising that people don't use itunes?. ive never installed it

Have you heard of these products called iPods? Or iPhones? or iTouches? Lots of people have them. Some of them even use iTunes to put music onto them. Crazy, I know!

No, I've never heard of an iTouch. You know why? Because it doesn't fucking exist. It's a fucking iPod Touch. Get it right.

I tried iTunes as a music manager once, found it completely unsatisfactory. Having said that, I wouldn't have predicated that the figure would be quite that low...what with the dominance of the iPod/Phone/Pad/Partridgeinapeartree.

Make a note of it. 30% of Steam gamers have uTorrent.

That's probably the most important thing on there.

30% of the users who were willing to let Steam scan their software. I'd imagine there's a whole heap of people who chose to either uninstall uTorrent or were too paranoid to take part in the survey.

And they might also be using the portable version.
