Xbox 360 Commercial Busted For Using PS3 Footage

A commercial for Final Fantasy XIII has been reprimanded by Britain's Advertising Standards Authority for using PlayStation 3 footage in an advertisement for the Xbox 360 version of the game.

All it took was one viewer to complain to the advertising watchdog that the 360 ad was using PS3 footage for the ASA to sit down with both 360 and PS3 versions of the game. The ASA's statement on the matter says "We tested the two games, on screens with an identical set up, and ran them alongside one another."

"We noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two - the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the XBOX 360."

"We considered that, because the ad promoted the game on the XBOX 360 platform, it should have featured footage derived from that console."

"Because it did not, and because we considered that the use of PS3 footage in the ad exaggerated the quality of the footage available on the XBOX 360, albeit marginally, we concluded the ad was misleading."

Following the finding, the ad in its present form can never be shown again on British television. Not that it would, with the game long released, but them's the rules. In Square Enix's defence, the publisher says that the footage was taken from the game's pre-rendered cinematic sequences, and that viewers would only notice the difference watching the content in HD and "reviewing the materially forensically".

We're a little unsure which commercial it is, exactly, the ruling refers to, so we've contacted Square Enix for clarification.

“We noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two – the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the XBOX 360.”

You can't pay for this kind of publicity.

Well, you probably could, but getting it for free is gold :P

There's no pro-PS3 or anti-360 publicity of any worth here. One game looking better on a certain console is not remotely indicative of that console's quality.

Regardless, my PS3 owning mate will give me plenty of crap over this as I've only got a 360 to play FFXIII on...

Actually, since they're talking about the pre-rendered cutscenes, which look better on PS3 specifically because of the extra space afforded by the dual-layer Blu-ray (while the 360 is stuck with DVDs and therefore only gets heavily compressed 576p FMVs), it kind of is pointing out that one is better in a way. This isn't about one game looking better on the console it was made on than the one it was ported to, that happens in reverse all the time like with RDR - this is something the PS3 is fundamentally better at.

...don't companies normally just have a little disclaimer at the bottom saying "footage from x version" or the like? eg car ads always having "overseas model shown" in fine print. Seems the marketing department got lazy I suppose.

Indeed... didn't MS get pissy at Nintendo over that whole Tiger Woods incident once upon a time?

Honestly, people took this X-Box 360 vs Playstation 3 graphics stupidity too far. The game looks fucking incredible on both. All games released on both consoles look fucking incredible. Console fans need to get a reality check.

A reality check or a girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever their into. Seriously, people who get all up in arms over which console is better need a life or something.

Anyway, funny story, but I don't know which is sadder; the fact that someone took enough notice of the ad to tell the wrong footage was used, or actually going to the trouble of complaining about it. Like I said, someone needs a girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever.

I agree with Cheese. This issue has come up with multi platform games in the past such as Ghostbusters and more recently Red Dead Redemption... The xbox being the one with the better graphics this time around. Being a PS3 owner, this hasn't been an issue to me at all, I know the game will still look gorgeous on my console of choice.

But this story is still kind of funny... I guess you could compare it to Ford using a Holden engine in their ads.

I haven't seen the ad in question, but regardless of the graphics issue or which system it's on, they'd have to deem it misleading if it claimed that FFXIII was actually a good game.

Sounds more like the Brit Advertising Agency want to give themselves a bit of free publicity, how long ago has this game come out? With this recession and all its more likely they are trying to justify their jobs, worthless tripe, this isn't news, its like Celebrity gossip for video games. I bet Paris Hilton has something to do with this...

They should complain that Rockstar with Red Dead Redemption used Xbox 360 footage to advertise the game and never showed how bad the PS3 version looked.
