Xbox 360 Voice Chat Quality Being Upgraded

Xbox Live Studios boss Jerry Johnson has revealed that the Xbox 360's voice chat feature is in for an upgrade, aimed at improving the quality of player-to-player communication over Xbox Live.

"The codec we used when we first launched was a low bit rate codec and we stuck with that", he said at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, as reported on Eurogamer.

"We launched and we said we required broadband. We required a 64k connection, which not many people think of as broadband any longer. But that was the minimum requirement to run the service at the time."

"It's time for us to move on. Especially if we want to think about broadening - a crackly headset on the top of your head – not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment."

Great. So come November, I'll be able to hear someone call me a misguided racial epithet or question my sexuality in even clearer detail? Uh, thanks...?

I use this to talk to actual friends a lot so this is good - I rarely engage the great unwashed in voice chat, it just ends up killing my faith in people.

You have faith in random people to start with?
I have never really understood the gripes about morons on xbl chat: there is a mute button for a reason.

What do you mean by "actual" friends, is there an alternative imaginary option?

is there a particular reason for using the image of a cute looking girl in this article? is the upgrade aimed at that market segment?

I actually think that's Rhianna... the singer...

Can't be loops... there's no umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.

      That would be rhianna...

      that would be my wife.

        she looks 12

    "cute looking" SINGER. thats Rihanna.

man Rihanna looks ugly in that photo

Jon, are you saying that cute girls aren't allowed to be portrayed as gamers who wear headsets? You preferring a large sweaty man covered in crumbs yelling into the mic?
You're segregating man. Embrace the cute girls. They can be nerds too.

bitch bitch eat that ho bitch bitch buh buh bitch

Yea, get with the times 360. The Bit-Rate is so bad, it makes my skin crawl sometimes. Been a PC gamer well before the 360, and that has had proper voice chat quality for years.

Non-showering douchebags that bully in the workplace do the same to me! PS3 chat has shat all over Xbox for ages anyways... And PC gaming is dying in the arse as it is. Just my 2c worth :-D

I guess you could still use teamspeak/ventrillo or the like.

About time. Maybe now I won't have to have vent going while I play 360 games with my friends.

Yeah, I've been expecting this for a while now. You go on any PC game and it sounds a hell of a lot better... I only hope it doesn't effect lag at all.

Will a higher bit-rate fit well with consoles considering the host is serving P2P?

The 360's voice chat has all around been a pretty horrible experience for me. I have two official headsets. Neither work, at all. The mic symbol shows up, but no sound gets transmitted, regardless of the switch's position.
My own headset (Astro A40) does work, but for some reason the mic symbol is always turning on and off, regardless of any sound.
Even worse is that any headset you want to use with the 360 has to be plugged into the controller.
But we already know Microsoft don't want you getting 3rd party things if they can help it.

both wired and wireless MS headsets are complete rubbish. have multiple versions of both and they can't get a single product right. upgrade the voice... how about updating the hardware sometime. MS accessories have been a complete disaster aside from the controller even that i still have problems with the play'n'charge kit. no wheel, crap headsets, crap rechargeable batteries. i bet the Lips microphone is good though because that seems to be the market MS care about now

This is pretty cool, I guess. I don't get much of the 'fkin homo' stuff anymore, as I'm almost always in party chat.
