Austrian Anti-Muslim Game Stokes Outrage

A right-wing Austrian political party's published a flash game in which the countryside is overrun with minarets and mosques and players must stop their construction. Because nationalism and xenophobia's so much more fun when it's in the German language!

Moschee Baba ("Bye-Bye Mosque") is a minute-long, shooting-gallery type game in which a stop sign is clicked on a minaret, mosque, or muezzin (the guys who sound the morning calls to prayer). It's a political ad for the Freedom Party in the Styrian province; regional elections are coming at the end of the month.

No one's killed and nothing's destroyed in the game, but its tone is pretty hateful and paranoid and it's pissed off political opponents but good. Social Democrats, the Green Party and, of course, the Muslim community have demanded the game's removal and an investigation for "incitement."

The game is, of course, a gross caricature of the reality of the situation in Austria. Only four mosques with a visible minaret exist in the country. None are in Styria, whose population is 1.2 percent Muslim.

After the game ends, it serves players with a push poll, asking if there should be a ban on minaret construction, wearing of burqas, niqabs or other Islamic garments, and if Muslims should sign some oath accepting Austrian law's primacy over the Koran. Fun stuff.

Phew. Yet another one of those times I read 'Austrian' as 'Australian'. I was worried for a minute there.

It's not really surprising that this sort of thing arises, though.

Gotta get the kicks in before the percentage rises any higher or you'll never get them out, like the christians.
Before the hate starts, I'm against the game and pro religious freedom, especially against forcing a religion on someone before they can choose re.baptism.

Oh Austrian...was about to say here we live in this great country (Australia) and stuff like this brings it down.

It is a bit poor taste, but you can't really comment if you haven't lived in a Muslim country.

I lived in Malaysia for a year, and I tell you, after a few months of hearing that damn prayer music EVERY morning at 6AM... I'd be inclined to emphasize with these guys :P

That was no fun at all. I was hoping for some blood or at least an explosion...
Why is it when a non-muslim country complains about islam they are labeled as 'racsist' or 'bigoted' but its never an issue when islam represses Jews, Christians, Hindu's?

Because unless you're talking about the idiot extremists who are censured by everyone, including the sensible and educated Muslims (and rightly so), at no time in history has Islam actually tried to repress a religion for no reason.

The one modern example I can think of is Israel, and one could argue that Palestinians have a very good reason to be pissed off that a piece of their country was arbitrarily given to the Jews without their consent. And let's face it, Israeli behaviour since (remember actual death tolls on each side are still very much in favour of the Israelis, and they do have the world's third best-equipped army, thanks to US support) has hardly been worthy of moral support.

If we look at other nations, such as India, Muslims did invade, but as far as I can tell, the only people who converted were those who chose to for business reasons. I could be wrong, but irrespective, as in later examples (see below), Muslims tended to integrate themselves with the local community and not push themselves. In fact, it is a central tenet of Islam that while they believe people who do not believe will not get into paradise, they should not try and convert those who are unwilling, and should in fact let them be. This is not something that could ever be said of Christianity, for example.

Staying on India, please note that in the last century, Muslims played a key role in the country's independence, and have been thanked by being pushed out the nation. Pakistan and Bangladesh, anyone?

Finally, if you look at Spain, one of the most Catholic countries in the world, you'll note that when the Islamic empire spread there, they again did not force people to convert, or try and repress them. Rather, they let Christians worship and one ruler actually employed an open-minded Catholic priest as his chief negotiator with the Germans. Note that when the Christians took Spain again following the collapse of Muslim Spain, they promptly outlawed Muslim worship.

I think you'll find that extremists aside (and let's face it, any extremism is scary, and very visible in every religion - just look at heartland America for more details) Islam is one of the least repressive religions around. And I say that as an atheist.

"If we look at other nations, such as India, Muslims did invade, but as far as I can tell, the only people who converted were those who chose to for business reasons. No, sorry, but you are wrong. During the birth of the religion Sikhism, muslims tyrants murdered many a sikh, giving them the ultimatum: follow islam, or die. Not only sikhs were given this treatment, but hindus as well. Some of the Sikh Gurus were indeed killed under this madness, and plenty converted to Islam out of fear for their life.

you say that as an utter fuckwit with no knowledge of the evils of islam. the fucking shitlamic prophet was a paedophile who raped and murdered and encouraged muslims to do so. or maybe its the part about marrying 6yr old girls, sex slaves, and a man having up top 4 wives at any given time (reducing a woman to a mere quarter of a mans worth). or the rape laws insisting that 4 male muslim men must bear witness to the act
in fact his and shitlams treachary to humanity is documented in the the koran shitkicker, so if thats not repressive then i dont know what is?

That's just stupid. Muslims shouldn't be represented that way. Unless you know a good Muslim and know what there about and not some terrorist claiming to be. Then all your going to believe is the media + people like this.

It goes for all religions too. If people could take the time to understand rather than acting blindly, we would live in a better place.

im not saying its right, but you would think that a game that would slam muslims and islam as a whole would label them all as terrorists.

when you are trying to spread propaganda arent you suppose to breed fear and ignorance by portraying them all as blood thirsty murderers bent on global domination and raping children.

i dont get the whole OH SHI** THEY ARE BUILDING STUFF. WE MUST DESTROY IT...

I'll give it another 10 posts after this before Godwin's law is enacted.
