Happy Bday Dreamcast, We'll Never Forget You

How fitting that even on its birthday, nine years after its demise, the Sega Dreamcast is still being overshadowed by Sony's PlayStation 2.

It's the PlayStation 2, courtesy of both its actual sales and the perception that many people held off on buying Sega's new console in 1999 in lieu of a PS2 in 2000, that killed the Dreamcast (well, that and rampant piracy), which will go down in history as Sega's least successful, yet perhaps also most-loved home console.

It looked great, it had a great controller, was the first console to really embrace online gaming, and it was home to some of the most unique and memorable game series of all time, like Soul Calibur, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Shenmue, Power Stone, Marvel vs Capcom, Phantasy Star Online, Seaman and Crazy Taxi.

So that it's not completely forgotten on its special day - the Dreamcast was first released in North America on September 9, 1999 - we're going to pay tribute to the little system that couldn't by taking a stroll down the whitest, crispest memory lane in all of gaming.

Never forget.

Jet Set Radio was so much fun! Loved that game soooo freakin' much.

Shenmue was such a great game too. It's only downfall was the terrible terrible TERRIBLE American voice acting. If only it had had a setting to switch it back to the original voices with subtitles just like Sonic Adventure did!

Oh Dreamcast, you were pretty damn fun!
    Crrrrraaaaaaaaaaazy Taxi!

I just bought 8 brand new games from Japan.
Really cheap got the 8 games for $70. Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, Virtua Fighter, Sonic Adventures and a few Japanese games.

I also have the arcade adapter to put the dreamcast in my Neo Geo arcade machine. House of the Dead 2 and all the fighting games look awesome running on an arcade monitor. The tennis game is awesome as well.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! That Shenmue ad gave me a full-on robot chubby!

I so dream it comes to Live even though I still own both!

This and plenty of other reasons/games is why the Dreamcast is my favourite console of all time.

I got my Dreamcast back around xmas holidays 1999. After a year I only played it when mates where around for Soul Calibur. I don't think i've even switched it on for about 7-8 years. Not enough good games. A piece of crap system really.

You know, Space Channel 5 and JSR would make great kinect games.

playstation 2 didnt kill dreamcast, dvd did

u know 10 years on shenmue still looks awesome, one of the first true next gen titles.
its a shame shenmue.com got taken over by porn
and remember shenmue 2 had jap only language with subs

and shenmue 2 had the best and worst ending ever

Bought a Dreamcast about a month ago with five games. Needless to say that's seeing more play time at the moment than my 360, PS3 and Wii combined. One of the best consoles of all time :D

I still love to this day Sega Bass Fishing, yes its old and doesnt have much gameplay but i love it so much and the graphics were awesome at the time is was released.

I still have my Dreamcast with original boxing. Its actually set up under my tv. I LOVE the Dreamcast. I have about 30 Dreamcast games, proudly legit and ready to play. I just wish I could play some online on the damn thing :(
