Enslaved has Hollywood talent like actress Lindsay Shaw. The game was written by Alex Garland of 28 Days Later and The Beach fame. And its developers originally pitched Enslaved as a feature film.
The idea was for Enslaved to be a computer-generated flick. As website Destructoid points out, it would have been rendered in real time with the Unreal Engine 3 (which also powers the game).
“We were serious about it,” Ninja Theory’s Tameem Antoniades. “We went to all the big studios in Hollywood and pitched the idea.”
But the studios could not grasp the concept of rendering a movie in real time. “They have no idea of what real time means,” says Antoniades. “They just care about how good it looks.”
“Then, the fact that you say you can do this for cheap has no interest to studios whatsoever,” he adds, “because they don’t want to do it for cheap. They want Pixar and the other higher end [studios]to do it for 100 million dollars or 60 million dollars.”
According to Antoniades, Hollywood views doing it any other way as “a huge risk”. “It just didn’t wash,” he says. “It just didn’t go with the model that’s established in movies.”
Just think – the movie industry could have had an animated monkey touching a pig’s penis – and on the cheap. Hollywood, you blew it!
