Michael Jackson, The Online Game

Planet Michael is a massively multiplayer online game devoted to the music and life of the late Michael Jackson. No, this is not a joke.

"We put a focus on something that will truly allow fans to immerse themselves in a Michael Jackson-like universe or music-video-like world and interact with each other and then go on adventures and do gameplay stuff and socialise," Josh Gordon of developer SEE Virtual Worlds tells USA Today.

The game will feature areas based on songs like Beat It and Smooth Criminal. Players won't use violence on quests, but dancing.

Planet Michael is a free-download that claims to be "The Ultimate Michael Jackson Online Game". (Isn't it the only Michael Jackson online game?) Planet Michael is aimed at players 13 years old and up. That is not a joke, either.

"There is no doubt we will be open to people joking about it and criticising it," Gordon adds. "We'll just have to roll with that as it comes, so to speak." Gordon believes that the developer would be criticised no matter what they did.

No, they'll just be criticised for making a Michael Jackson MMO.

Why is everybody being mean to them? I mean, I, on occasion like to partake in adventures and do gameplay stuff as well. Don't we all?

Seriously though, Planet Michael, meet APB -- you guys are gonna be just~ fine... oh wait.

Crap, the boss is doing that special move again. IS ANYBODY'S MOONWALK OFF COOLDOWN?!

There was a Michael Jackson game for the Sega Master System (and various other early consoles) called Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. It was essentially based on the film and focused on finding and rescuing kidnapped children. From memory it was actually quite good for the time and had a rad soundtrack with 8-bit renditions of Michael's hits. Definitely worth checking out, if for no other reason than the 8-bit soundbites of Michael's "Woo!" and "Shamone!" amongst others. Bubbles the monkey also makes an appearance late in the game.

All pedophile and surgery jokes aside, this still seems like a stupid idea. But if this is happening, we can only hope other musicians will get their own MMOs too. Elvis MMO, here we come!
