Original GoldenEye Dev Has A Slight Issue With Remake

Martin Hollis, who while with Rare was one of the men behind the original GoldenEye on the Nintendo 64, has some kind words to say about Activision, the publisher pushing the remake.

Oh, sorry, did I say kind?

"I imagine it is a business decision, isn't it?", HOllis told Official Nintendo Magazine. "This name is valuable, let's use it. I find it hard to picture Activision's top management being excited about the original and wanting to do it justice. In fact, I find it hard to imagine them being excited about any game. It's my perception that they are trying to be EA, only more so. I think they are doing a fine job at that."

Before you think he's saddled with a load of sour grapes, Hollis does have kinder words to say about Eurocom, the actual developers working on the game, saying "they are a good company" and that "I'm confident they have done their very best".

well of course. I mean IW - the makers of the most successful game franchise (sub franchise?) ever - nearly came to all out war with Activision!! if you think consumers hate them... I'm sure developers hate them more.

Complaining that Activision is cashing in on Rare's Goldeneye game is a little rich, seeing as that game came out a mere 2 years after the film of the same name- which of course was the new chapter in one of the largest franchises in the history of film.

Dont get me wrong, Goldeneye is my first love affair with FPS, but if Rare and Ninty had been able to sort something out, friendly-like, we would have had it on XBLA/WiiVirtualConsole 2 years ago and Activision's tender to the Broccoli's might have been unnecessary. And seriously, games reminiscences are some of the more rose-tinted there are... this 13 year old shooter feels more dated than a Hypercolor tshirt worn with snap-pants and Pony hightops.

He's just saying what nobody else has the balls to say. I'm pretty sure most people thought the exact same thing what this project was announced. I know I did.

I like the PD HD remake...
