Report: You Wanted Final Fantasy XIII DLC? Sorry!

These days, it's standard for video games to get downloadable content after they are released. Final Fantasy XIII is not your standard game.

Final Fantasy XIII has not gotten any downloadable content - to the chagrin of players. DLC gives a title a longer life and sometimes provides a more robust gaming experience. Downloadable content is something to look forward to.

On December 17, 2009, Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama wrote this on the game's official website: "The world of Final Fantasy XIII is starting from here on out." He then added if players held on to their copies of the game, "good things" were possibility on the horizon.

It seemed as though Toriyama was hinting at future downloadable content for the game.

In a recent interview with a Japanese game magazine, Toriyama apparently said, "We had plans for DLC, but those plans disappeared. Apologies!"

Previously, Square Enix stated that there were enough discarded Final Fantasy XIII assets to make another game.

Kotaku is following up with Square Enix and will update if the companies comments on this issue.

Unless the DLC turns it into a real RPG I don't care.

I spent the money on the special collector's edition and still haven't bothered to finish it.

I have NEVER been so dissapointed with a Final Fantasy before!

FFXIII doesn't need DLC, it just needed to be a better game in the first place. I bought the Collector's edition of the game, having been an avid fan of the series especially after the one-two punch of FFX and FFXII, which were both completely different games yet both fantastic, with just enough originality to remain fresh in what is generally a staid genre. The game was the biggest disappointment this console generation, with dull, anime-inspired melodrama, a poor localisation effort, and the worst battle system I've seen in a JRPG ever (from the 8 bit era to now) that you never even got to play around with until about 30 hours in. I don't know why the game received such positive reviews but I am guessing that its visual polish saved it from the mediocre reviews it deserved.

Now apparently the bits that weren't good enough to go into this poor game will be used for a future title? Let's look forward to that one.
