Fallout: New Vegas' First DLC Will Be Xbox-Exclusive

As if there was any doubt, Bethesda Softworks reveals plans to support Fallout: New Vegas with downloadable game add-ons, with an Xbox 360 exclusive pack coming out first. Hopefully they'll work this time.

Having released several downloadable add-ons for Fallout 3, it comes as no surprise that Bethesda has big plans for Fallout: New Vegas post-launch content. The cavalcade of downloadable goodness kicks off exclusively on the Xbox 360 sometime after the game's launch tomorrow.

"We're excited to continue the partnership between Bethesda and Microsoft, and build on the success of the game add-ons released for Fallout 3 on Xbox LIVE," said Pete Hines, vice president of marketing and PR at Bethesda Softworks. "Fans will once again be able to continue their experience in the Fallout universe with the add-on packs planned for after the launch of the game."

Hopefully these new add-ons will be released in working order, unlike some Fallout 3 add-on packs we could mention.

Specifics on the upcoming add-ons will be released at a later date.

I hope they mean limited exclusive to come out on PC later, if they're only going to suppurt the Xbox version, why even release it for PC and PS3.

Looks like us PS3 owners will have to wait a few months before the DLC comes to town.

On the bright side, this delay will be long enough for Bethesda to announce a GOTY (or equivalent) edition containing all of the DLC... without the almost inevitable bugs.

Fallout 3 GOTY edition had more bugs than the original version! The more you played the game, the more it crashed.

Nice to see another kick in the teeth for us PS3 owners.

What about all your PS3 exclusives that we don't even get to play? *snicker*

Are you sure the GOTY edition had more bugs? While the original version was fairly stable, you really need to compare the GOTY edition with the original version with all DLC installed.

As you play through the game and visit more areas, the save file size increased. I suspect that this game state was being managed in memory, and the game was simply running out of memory if you played through all the content.

While the PS3 and Xbox 360 both have 512MB of memory, the PS3's memory is split between system and graphics memory. So it is quite possible for the PS3 version to run out of memory before the Xbox 360 version.

Isn't that something the developers should address themselves though?

Or am I being naive in assuming that developers should ensure their engines work properly on all hardware platforms?

I own both versions of Fallout 3, and the GOTY edition is fine if you start a brand new game with it. If you're continuing a saved game based on the previous version, it does crash more often.

Ah, the joys of data structure differences.

May not be the cause, but it is a good start.

It still amazes me that ANYBODY actually buys these Bethesda games at launch when you know there'll be a GOTY edition along a bit later. I'll be waiting for the GOTY edition before I even think about New Vegas. Still playing through Fallout 3 GOTY anyway, so I've got plenty to keep me busy in the meantime.

I hear ya. A bit spoilt for choice at the moment, and still have a backlog to work through anyway. Glad I read this announcement before buying the game this week. GOTY version it is.

    "Exclusive"

Does anyone even take the word seriously anymore?

BioShock was "exclusive" to the XBox 360 and Windows and look what happened.

Mass Effect 1 was "exclusive" to XBox 360 and look what happened.

Star Ocean 4 was "exclusive". Tales of Vesperia was "exclusive". Eternal Sonata was "exclusive".

This is how I see it these days: they makes something "exclusive" on the platform that is guaranteed to give them the broadest market accessibility. The publishers and/or developers wait for the profits to cancel out the development costs then finally release on other platforms because they now know they can safely do so with no financial disadvantage to themselves.

I avoid this by having one of each device for each console generation. I tend to go 360 partly because it is cheaper but mostly because the PS3 seems to be given the short end of the stick with bad ports (GhostBusters and BioShock anyone?)

If the game is a action one (like Batman: Arkham Asylum) I check to ensure the port is proper then get that version instead.

Fail Wisehacker. Mass Effect 1 was and still is exclusive to the Xbox.

      Mass Effect 2 HOWEVER...

Well, I'd load up my copy of ME1 on Steam, but apparently it was never released for PC.

Mass Effect is also available for PC. Has been for some time.

absolutely. Saw it in EB games the other day, and bought it on Steam ages ago. the DLC installs fine on PC too.

Don't forget the $50m "exclusive" GTAIV DLC.

        Sorry about that.

Didn't know that one as I am not a fan of GTA.

I agree with you to a point. The word "exclusive" doesn't necessarily indicate it will permanently stay that way. For the time period before they release the PS3 version, it will certainly be exclusive to the Xbox.

Myself, I've got a few unplayed games already purchased, and planning to purchase. By the time I'm ready for New Vegas, I'm sure they'll have the GOTY edition released.

That's what I meant. Years ago, exclusive actually meant you had to have the console the play the game.

These days, exclusive usually means "only on this platform until going multi-platform does not harm our bottom line."

Oh FFS. Aren't you supposed to advertise exclusives BEFORE launch? Seriously, are these people the biggest idiots ever or what?

Speaking of idiotic, the game counted down to zero on Steam. And then changed to locked for another 3 days, because apparently only Americans get to play it now. Go duck yourselves Bethesda.

As long as any exclusives are just weapon and armor packs and not quests or knew areas I'm fine with it.

    I just pre-ordered the PS3 version yesterday.

This Microsoft 'partnership' is a load of balls.

And while I'm ranting, why did they take away the trophies for completing the game on different difficulties? I wanted one for completing the game on Hardcore-Hard. :-(

Very dissapointed about this, especially if it is a true exclusive.

Its a gigantic kick in the teeth for PC fans - especially those of us who have supported fallout since it first began.

I have bought every Fallout, as well as all the DLC's for Fallout 3 and have a PC pre-order of New Vegas, and I really hope that the rest of the New Vegas DLC's don't follow this suit, as I really enojyed the FO3 DLC's

Hi, I'm Microsoft. I've got more money and fanboys than I know what to with. What am I going to do today? Hrm. I know! I'll go and ruin one of the most highly anticipated games of the year for everyone who doesn't own an Xbox 360! I mean seriously, how many people use those Pee-ess-free things anyway? And PC? Isn't that like someone who helps you get fit?

lol couple of fanboys flaring up!

Either way, it will end up coming to every console, just like every other game that releases 'exclusive' content.

not true i had fallout 1 or 2 on ps 1 or 2

This is pretty low, considering Fallout is a PC franchise. Why is 360 so special, why not PS3? The PC is the only one of the consoles that actually has a history with the franchise.

Further more, does Microsoft think that there are customers who sit on the fence between PC and 360? They're hoping to encroach on PS3's market share by appealing to people who own both consoles, but really, no one will shift from PC to a home console to by DLC. They'll just get angry.

heck yes. FO was one of the few franchises I was happy to fork out money for a new release - not now though. And I'm suspicious of whether AC:B and ME3 on this count as well, once they're released.

I preordered this game a week ago for the ps3 cause of pc problems. I planned on getting the game of the year edition with all its dlc for the pc later on. This is bullshit if I gotta get it on all 3 platforms just to play all the dlc and mods. I really hope that this "exclusive" dlc ends up on the goty edition for pc.

A owned a 360 up untill about a year ago and have since adopted my Ps3 and PC as my gaming outlets, because all though on the surface there seems to be great advantages to 360 ownership there are a few things to consider.

Take the N64 for example, in the era of playstations uprising most saw the N64 as childsplay and this resulted in a bad marketshare in most countries and that resulted in developers not wanting to bother with the platform, but out of this cloud came a silver lining, Nintendo was forced to support thier own console with great titles and set the standards for the future.

Games like Goldeneye, PerfectDark, Zelda ocarina of time, DK64, Mario 64 showed gamers just what was really possible for 3d games and along with that came support from other companies who saw they could make money from exclusives on the platform. Iroinicly Playstations 3rd outing is not unlike nintendo's first crack at a 3d console, and the gamers are reaping benefits even if there is sad news like this. Can anyone say Uncharted 2 or MGS4 or God of war 3 or Heavy rain or Killzone 2 or... well you get the point.

    Peace.

lol fail 3 months in and its already announced on ps3 http://www.ripten.com/2010/11/23/fallout-new-vegas-dlc-will-raise-level-cap-to-35-and-make-you-rich/
