Kinect's Solved Its Sitting-Down Problem

The subject of much gumflapping post E3, Kinect's ability to handle players who are sitting down has been more finely tuned, Eurogamer reports. It's now calibrated to focus on your neck-al area rather than your ass-al area.

The "base node" used to create the skeletal models that the controller recognises has been switched from the bottom of the spine to the back of the neck, says Eurogamer, quoting a developer with experience working on the technology.

"It means that should the bottom of your torso get confused with the sofa, because your bum and your legs are enveloped inside the sofa, it doesn't matter because your hands and arms are still working," Andrew Oliver, of Blitz Games Studios, told Eurogamer.

The change occurred "a few months ago," Oliver said. "A lot of developers were like, 'Oh my God! Everything's broken,' because all the nodes were moved. But then it was like, 'Oh, actually, this is more logical.'"

Kinect's Sitting Down Woe Finally Over [Eurogamer via Destructoid]

This is good news for me. I'm extremely lazy so anything that avoids me having to stand up is a win.
I'm still not sure if I'll bother with Kinect, although my kids will probably love it.

Kinect has potential, no doubt, but nothing really impresses me enough to consider buying it at launch.

...but something's slowly breaking me down (mostly the $550 360-S/Kinect package), I'm mostly hesitant because I doubt it'd get much use.

I just hope it isn't a total failure because it means game companies will be reluctant to invest in more new ideas.

I think this highlights a good point about Kinect- so much of it is software-driven that as the research continues, they can just keep patching it and its tracking abilities will get better and better.

Already got my Kinect and Dance Central preordered.

Still waiting for shops to actually have Dance Masters/Dance Evolution on their books so I can order that too (the release is a total mess across the whole world, no two sites have the same details...). The only shop I can find in Australia to offer a preorder is Game, but... yeah, it's Game.
