Kotaku Speed Dating

Hi everyone. My name is Mark Serrels. I like eating kebabs, drinking Irn Bru and running until I vomit. But enough about me – we already did the introduction and the interview – I want to know about you. Yes. You. I’m speaking directly to you!

That’s right – for one night only – this is Kotaku speed dating. This is where you get to introduce yourself to me.

We’re going to keep it simple, I want to know a couple of things specifically, just so I can get the general gist of everyone and why they’re awesome.

Tell me a bit about yourself (keep it clean!) Tell me what you’re playing right now Are you enjoying it? Tell me what game you’re most looking forward to in 2011. And finally, what’s your favourite game of all time?

    Hi Mark!

I'm a 32 yr old arcade gamer who landed a sweet job making corporate flash games. I spent my youth playing bombjack and bump 'n jump, followed by a healthy addiction to SF2.

I'm trying to play Demon's Souls (still). I love it but I just don't have time to dedicate to it. Setting up the MAME machine in my office so I can at least get through a few classics in my (many) breaks.

I'm looking forward to the 3DS titles. Star Fox will be my first purchase for that.

I have to choose an arcade game. And it has to be BombJack. It's not THE best game I've played but just hearing the music makes me giddy. I played it for hours every day when I was 8.

Tell me a bit about yourself -
DBA for constuction company. i work on site and gaming lets me keep in touch with all my mates back home on a daily basis.

Tell me what you’re playing right now Are you enjoying it? -
WOW, i had my 12-months clean of WoW chip in hand untill last week one of my workmates pointed out the next expansion is due december so i rounded up my mates, all former players too. and were jointly playing new characters re-experiancing the game world before it gets trashed in the expansion.

Tell me what game you’re most looking forward to in 2011. -
    Deus Ex 3(see below)

And finally, what’s your favourite game of all time. -
Deus Ex, the combination of RPG and shooter and cyber-punk open world that really struck a cord long before fallout 3 existed. it was a game where my custom silenced pistol could carry me through the entire story, and getting into a dual wielding machine gun standoff, action hero style meant i had done somthing horribly, horribly wrong. in contrast to Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, etc, etc.

    Hey Mark.

Name's Corey. Final year uni student in Sydney but will probably head back sometime next year to do postgrad. Fan of your work at PSM3 btw.

Currently playing SSFIV (main Vega but it's so hard to win with him consistently) and Yakuza 3. Both games are brilliant but my backlog has now become ridiculous.

Looking forward to Assassin's Creed:Brotherhood. I'd like to see conclusion of Ezio's story.

Favourite game is FFVIII. It sucked me into RPGs and I've never really looked back.

    Hi Mark,

I'm an (almost) 40 year old gamer, working full time in IT in digital printing.

I am currently on my 3rd playthrough of Dead Rising 2, but I also picked up Enslaved yesterday, to get me through until Fallout New Vegas.

I'm also looking forward to Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 and Infamous 2.

I don't think I could pick one game which is my favourite ever.. Fallout 3 is up there, Super Mario 64, San Fransisco Rush, Burnout Revenge, the Skate games.. I could go on forever.

Hi i'm Stevo. I've had some various sorts of game controllers in my hands for about 22 years now and look forward to my twilight years where I'll spend my retirement getting through my pile of unfinished games (assuming my hands still work by then)

I've recently been playing Spiderman Shattered Dimensions which I loved, and just started on Resident Evil 5 with the Move controller which is kind of cool

Zelda Skyward Sword, the 3DS, Infamous 2 are all things I'm looking forward too next year.

Zelda: Wind Waker is my favourite game of all time, it gets a yearly play through because it's just magic on a little disc.

how could I forget, also looking forward to Batman Arkham City

We meet again, Mr Serrels..... sounds like a Bond film, doesn't it?

.... well we've actually never met, but conversed many a time. Must change that someday.... and involve beer too. I still owe you one.

You know where I hang out. For those who don't, click my name thingy.

Not playing much at the moment as renovating the house is seriously getting in the way of gaming, but at the end there will be 120" of projection goodness to play upon, so it's worth the gaming-neglect.

Seriously want me some new Batman in 2011

My fave of all time: Breath of Fire II on SNES. We grew up together.... although some would say I never grew up

    Peter Pan...... I mean Cav

NIce to hear from you again Peter Pan!

Although I always preferred Rufio... RUFIO... RUFIO!

    I am Bish!
This one time, I was folding some origami in class, but then I got a paper cut, but the period had ended so I packed up my stuff and was walking out of the classroom when BAM a hobo jumped out from a tree and attacked me and I was wrestling with him on the ground as he was trying to stab me from a blade made from hobo-hair, and then all my classmates gathered around and watched, shouting "HOBO-FIGHT!" which really hurt my feelings because I thought that kind of implied I was a hobo as well, so then I managed to distract him by throwing a half eaten sandwich onto a guy I really hated so that the hobo attacked him and then I got up and dusted myself off and HERE I AM.

Playing Minecraft and Etrian Odyssey 3 right now, because I am a masochist and hate myself, so when an oversized parrot manages to completely kill my whole party, I LOVE IT.

I don't really keep up with upcoming games (unless a game has really caught my attention), so the only noteworthy 2011 release I can think of (actually, the only 2011 release I can think of) is Deus Ex 3.

Which then links in nicely with Deus Ex being my favourite game evrar.

Unless the 3DS counts as a game? Not really, I suppose, but I am still excited for it.

Wow. I kind of almost hope that Hobo story was true.

lol.. i was so waiting for a band camp story after that first line :0

    harli. 22/f/Sydney.

HoN. TF2. Killing Floor. Yeah I am.

The Secret World. Too many others to name.

    I'm 40, and have been a video/computer gaming nerd since the 70's.

Currently playing Demon's Souls again - as well as Sports Champions and Tumble on PS3.

Some all time favourites for each decade:
    * 70's - A motorbike stunt jump game on a nasty Hanimex catridge system
    * 80's - Mouse Trap on Colecovision and Pool of Radiance on Amiga
    * 90's - Dune 2 (the RTS) on PC and Resident Evil 1 on PS2
    * 2000's - Final Fantasy 12 and Fatal Frame 3 on PS2, Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls on PS3

Looking forward to Killzone 3 in 2011.

Hiya Mark. My name is David. I'm a single 37 year old with a variety of hobbies, including electronics, squash, programming, piano, rock climbing, and of course, gaming. I work as a Linux/windows sysadmin.

I'm just about to finish Assassin's Creed II. Loving it. A huge improvement on the original game. I was a bit ho-hum about getting it, but saw it going cheaply recently, and decided to give it a chance. Very glad I did.

The game I'm most looking forward to in 2011? The Last Guardian, with the HD remakes of ICO and SotC a close second. As you can tell, I'm a Team ICO fan.

Favourite game of all time? Damn, that's hard to say. I'd rate SotC up there, obviously. I've got very fond memories of playing Day of the Tentacle. In fact, anything by Tim Schafer is a winner, particularly DotT, Grim Fandango, and Psychonauts.

Hey all, nice to meet you!

I'm Adam, 23, I work as an environment artist in the games industry in Australia. I live with my girlfriend of 6 years and life is pretty sweet.

Playing Reach and Dead Rising 2 atm.

Lookin forward to Black Ops most at the moment.

Fav game of all time is either One Must Fall or Mech Warrior 2.

Tell me a bit about yourself (keep it clean!)
I like football, video games, living in Lane Cove.

Tell me what you’re playing right now Are you enjoying it?
Fallout 3 is great because of its vast wasteland where everyone has a story; and its soundtrack, to which the Lindy Hop can be danced.

Tell me what game you’re most looking forward to in 2011.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

And finally, what’s your favourite game of all time.
Interstate '76, for its excellent funk soundtrack and its addictive, alternate history vehicular combat.

I'm rapidly nearing 30, and at some point I should get around to growing up.
I work for the SA Department of Health. Born in Ireland, but most of my family are from Coatbridge in Glasgow.
My mum didn't believe in computer games when I was growing up, so my first game was Age of Empires... and I got hooked.
I play bagpipes for a band here in Adelaide, and we're playing at the Edinburgh Tattoo next year.

I don't really play online much, but when I do it's Mercenary Team Deathmatch in CoD:MW2 (I like that it's accesable and that there's a team of people getting your back).

I generally play games for their stories... but the "achievement unlocked" sound is damn catchy.

Next year?: Dragon Age 2, Batman 2, Crysis 2, Homefront... and some I've probably not heard about yet.

Favourite games is probably TIE Fighter... or Mechwarrior something. Dark Forces was pretty good though.

Tell me a bit about yourself (keep it clean!)

24 year old IT worker, trying to keep sane with the amount of people who have the same problem: "My computer is broken". That's nice, care to elaborate on that? :P

Tell me what you’re playing right now Are you enjoying it?
Lost my afternoon and night to Civilization V last night, just started it up for a quick game and it ended at 12:30 when I had to be up at 6 to go to work. That, and I've been swapping around between DragonBall: Raging Blast and Ace Combat 6

Tell me what game you’re most looking forward to in 2011.
Witcher: Assassins of Kings, just because I love the first one.

And finally, what’s your favourite game of all time.
I can't possibly pick out just one, but if you pointed a gun at me, I'd say Metal Gear Solid 3 and then regret not picking another favorite game.

Nice way to get a feel for your audience. :P

Tell me a bit about yourself (keep it clean!)
I work as a Marketing Database Strategist for a large software company. Heavily into Gaming, Cars, and Technologyin general.

Tell me what you’re playing right now Are you enjoying it?
    Playing a few things
Dead Rising 2 - Freaking love this game, so much random funny stuff you can do :D
Split/Second - Awesome offline 1v1 with my flatmates. Easy to pick up and play :D

Tell me what game you’re most looking forward to in 2011.
    Duke Nukem Forever
    Deus Ex
    Portal 2
    Batman Arkham City

And finally, what’s your favourite game of all time

Hard one to answer. Would have to be one of the following:
    Mario 64
    Golden Eye (specifically the multiplayer)
    Uncharted 1 and 2
    Left4Dead 1&2

I could keep going, as i couldnt pick just one.

My name is James, I am a 20 year old game developer looking to get into the industry. Right now I've finally bought Demon's Souls and am getting my ass kicked at that, I've also dusted off my copy of Star Wars: Republic Commando and am playing through that again.

It's a hard toss up to decide what games I'm most looking forward to in 2011, it's currently between Batman: Arkham City, Bioshock Infinite, Brink, Crysis 2, Diablo 3, TLOZ: Skyward Sword, Portal 2, or The old republic. Gun to my head though, it would probably be Portal 2. My favourite game of all time would be Star Wars: Dark Forces 2, hence the name. The game was a heap of fun, and there were some awesome mods for it. Best game I've played recently (and probably ever will for all time (prove me wrong, game industry ;) )) is Red Dead Redemption.

    Hey Mark,

21 year old uni bum here, studying communications/journalism. Some tell me I'm a bit lazy with most things they deem important to life (such as cooking, cleaning, remembering what day it is), but enjoy all things gaming - playing them, talking about them writing about them, even writing my own harebrained schemes on the back of coffee shop napkins.

As well as my two big 'standby' games that I play constantly (Team Fortress 2 with my clan and League of Legends with my mates) I've been tackling Dead Rising 2 these past weeks, and loving it immensely. I'm about half-way through my second playthrough, which says a lot for a guy who's normally lucky to finish his first playthrough of most games.

Most looking forward to of 2011? Well, my fingers are crossed (to the point of snapping) that we'll either hear something about Diablo III at Blizzcon this month, or Half-Life 3: Episode 3. But that's a bit of a pipe dream, of games CONFIRMED to be coming out next year, I'd have to say i'm most looking forward to Pokemon Black and White, as well as the Nintendo 3DS.

Asking a gamer their favourite game of all time is a bit like asking a parent who their favourite child is. If I had to make a choice, It would probably be Diablo II, followed very, very closely by Half-Life 2, Fallout 3 and Red Alert 2.

Tell me a bit about yourself (keep it clean!)
    Human... I think

Tell me what you’re playing right now Are you enjoying it?
    Minecraft (Who isn't?).
Amnesia: The Dark Decent. Can you enjoy this? I think of it as a cheap laxative.
    Garry's Mod.
    Mount and Blade: Warband

Tell me what game you’re most looking forward to in 2011.
    Guild Wars 2

And finally, what’s your favourite game of all time.
    Oddworld: Abe's Exodus

    1. Hi Mark. I'm Mike. I've been posting on here for a couple of years now.

    2. I am playing through Assassin's Creed II currently on the 360. I'm loving it. Being passionate about the actual country Italy and its rich history, this title ticks boxes that don't often get ticked in action/adventure games for me.

    3. Bioshock Infinite & Deus Ex: Human Evolution

    4. Half Life 2 and the GTA series (most notably GTA: Vice City).

    Hi Mark (and everyone else)

There's a lot of posts here, I hope you have time to read them all :p

My name's Justin, and I'm an alcoholic. I mean, I'm 19 years old, and I've been playing games as long as I can remember. First game was probably Commander Keen or Wolfenstein... I honestly couldn't tell you, but my dad was into computer hardware, so that's why it wasn't Mario or Sonic. Never had a console until the early naughties.

Right now, I'm the opposite of a PC gamer (I guess you'd call that a console gamer?) I may have grown up on computers until about 2003, but I do not delude myself... it's 360 and PS3 for me now, I go where the games are. Currently jumping between a few games, I've got a lot to play... but most regularly, Modern Warfare 2, Bad Company 2 and Halo Reach... and on the side, Demon's Souls, Dead Rising 2 and some others I can't remember.

2011? How can I not say Duke Nukem Forever? ...Rage is high on my list as well. There are loads of others... I should get a job. I can has job at Kotaku? =D

Favourite game of all time? Doom... hypocritical coming from someone who claims to be a console gamer, I know, but I say again, I go with the times. Doom is my favourite because it symbolises everything I like about games. Atmosphere, art style and run and gun FPS gameplay... among other things. Close runner up of course would be the original Halo. *gasp* Most would deny it, but the simple fact is, Halo changed everything.

Anywho, I won't go on and bore anyone further! Thanks, Justin.

Also, does anyone know why I can't connect through Facebook any more?

It's weird, the little window comes up and it just stays white and says done in the corner...? =/

    Hey Serells

I always post using a random made up name on the spot on Kotaku. Don't ask why. You can probably track me by I.P. or something.

At the moment I'm playing Super Mario All-Stars on Super Nintendo, Homeworld on PC and Yoshi's Cookie on GameBoy.

The game I'm looking most forward to in 2011 is nothing. I'll have to tone down my gaming, stick to my backlog and study hard next year. I am hoping for a re-release of Shenmue on XBLA however (and any other dreamcast re-releases SEGA will be doing).

My favourite game of all time is Mother 3 on the GBA. It's the sequel to Earthbound and never made it to an English version. It is honestly one of the most mature stories I've seen in a video game.

While on favourites, I should also mention Half Life 2, Rise of Nations, Fallout 2, Oblivion, Metal Gear Solid, Chrono Trigger DS, Pokemon, A Link to the Past, Street Fighter...and I'll stop for now.

Tell me a bit about yourself (keep it clean!)
    26. Public servant. First game ever bought for myselfwas Bungie's Marathon in 1994 on a Mac. :P Mostly a PC gamer but also have a 360. More singleplayer than multiplayer because of time constraints. I love a good narrative and setting in my games. (And gameplay of course).

Tell me what you’re playing right now Are you enjoying it?
King Arthur: The Role Playing Wargame. Second attempt. Damn challenging RTS / RPG hybrid from Eastern Europe. One reviewer said - "If Total War and Heroes of Might and Magic had a love child this would be it." About right.

Tell me what game you’re most looking forward to in 2011.
    Deus Ex: Human Revolution because...

And finally, what’s your favourite game of all time.
Deus Ex. Just a brilliant game where you take so many approaches to situations.

Howdy! I r the welbot! I'm your friendly neighbourhood artist type guy. Married to a super cute Shanghainese gamer girl and we tend to spend a lot of our spare time..surprise surprise.. gaming! I've worked for several local and international game developers over the years doing 3d models and animations, and I've also done tv shows and other presentation animations for a variety of groups.
My first gaming machine was an Atari 2600, and have very fond memories of wasting plenty of my life with it and other machines throughout my life ;)
Currently I'm working my way through hordes of zombies in Dead Rising 2 and loving every minute of it!
What I'm looking forward to most next year would without a doubt have to be Heroes of Might and Magic 6!
As for favourite game of all time.. super tough. I have a soft spot in my heart for the oldies like zelda on snes, but I can't deny how many hours I've spent wasting playing things like Industry Giant 2. The whole Might and Magic series (inc Heroes) has a special place in my heart too. Not very definitive, but I'm sure it's enough to get the drift of what I'm all about ;)

Tell me a bit about yourself (keep it clean!)
    27. Working as a Gameplay Programmer at Blue Tongue in Melbourne. First game I ever worked on was Dead Space.

Tell me what you’re playing right now Are you enjoying it?
Splitting my time between minecraft and a second playthrough of Assassins Creed 2. Minecraft is one of the most insanely addictive games I have ever played, and I still can't work out why.

Tell me what game you’re most looking forward to in 2011.
If you said 2010 I'd say Rock Band 3, cos I spend too much money on that series. But for 2011 I'd say Deus Ex: Human Revolution, because from what I've seen so far it looks amazing.

And finally, what’s your favourite game of all time.
Has to be Wonderboy III : The Dragons Trap on Sega Master System. Amazing Metroid-vania style platform RPG, well ahead of it's time. I think I've played through it atleast 10 times by now.

    'sup dude.

I tend to go by the name Iggy. 20 years old and studying music at uni, though the course absolutely sucks ass. Play guitar and love to rock out to Dream Theater. I'll be doing my Masters of secondary education next year and I'm also quite poor due to hardly getting any shifts at work.

I'm currently playing Halo Reach and Mass Effect 2 and a bunch of Dsiware. I feel like I'm so close to getting every achievement in Halo Reach, but getting the rank of Major seems to far away given I don't have a Gold account - so I've been doing all them campaign commendations and whatever challenge pops up for single player. I imagine it'll take even longer to get Lt. Colonel. I'll get there one day. oh and Mass Effect 2 is the bomb. I've been so hooked on it. I shouldn't be playing it 'cause I've got a ton of essays that need writing but it's quite addictive.

Next year, Gears of War 3 and Zelda look to be the must have games for now. I'm not really aware of what else is coming out though :P

Any of the following series are my favourite: Halo, Mario, Metroid, Zelda, GTA, and I'll add Pokemon in there for good measure 'cause I find it so easy to clock 70 hours without realising it.
