Kotaku Awards 2010: Console Games

Kotaku Awards 2010: Console GamesHey guys, we’re about to kick off our Kotaku Game of the Year awards, and this year we want your vote! This week we’re going to be asking you guys for nominations for each award, before putting it to a vote next week.

Next up is the big one – console games.

This year was huge for games in general. We had one of the best starts to the year in recent memory, with Mass Effect 2, God of War 3, and Heavy Rain, and the mid-year didn’t disappoint either with Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy 2. We’ve even had some surprisingly awesome games towards the end of the year with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Gran Turismo 5 comes out this week, and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is another barnstormer. Then there are your givens; like Halo Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Fallout: New Vegas.

Wow. Looking back it’s been quite the year.

But what do you think? What are your nominations for best console game of the year? Let us know and we’ll put your nominations to a vote next week!

    • I’m pretty sure you’re joking, but it’s still one of the best party games I’ve played… and not just this year.

      • You know what.. i was. I then had another think about it and wanted to reconsider my Joking position. Kinect has completely changed the whole gaming interface which has not really been done winth the wii in 2006 (whenever it was?). It was a huge step forward and it has been done quite well. There are issues sure, but it has been good fun for me playing around and showing off the tech.

The test has been for me playing it alone. I don’t ever think i have turned on the wii while home alone gaming even when i first got it. Kinect has had me playing with myself (again a joke!!! i’m on fire NBA jam style).

Only issue, are we talking about game of the year, or hardware. Now i have not played it but perhaps we talk about dance central based on the reviews it has got around here. good hardware/software combination.

I know that these games will not get much support from the ‘hardcore’ (if we still call outselves that?) but these games have changed gaming one way or another…

  • Heavy Rain and Red Dead – New IP that helped advance the industry with mature well written and extremely well acted dialogue, something sorely lacking as a whole. Both great immersive experiences that built on games of the past while offering something totally new. For me HR and RDR point to how in the near future games will carve a place next to movies, tv and novels as a respected medium.

    • I agree with this, but I’d have to stick Mass Effect 2 in there for the same reasons. Yeah its a sequel, but only the 2nd, and they are being incredibly ambitious with all the interconnectivity that’s possible, the different outcomes to the last missions etc.

  • Assasin’s Creed: Brotherhood for action/adventure
    Halo Reach for first-person shooter
Splinter Cell: Conviction (no idea which category)

  • RDR and ME2 are the stand out candidates (haven’t played AC:Brotherhood yet) and although I enjoyed ME2 more, I could change my opinion once I play the RDR DLC.

  • LOL.
Funilly enough, being the budget (see tight ass) game i am, i haven’t played any of these titles..

So i’ll just throw a vote towards ME2, as i am LOVING ME at the moment.

  • Mass Effect 2 is my GOTY no question.

Special mention to Deadly Premonition for being one of the greatest WTF games released for some time.

  • Make sure GT5 is on that list…

of the games that I have played, Red Dead Redemption is probably in front at the moment.

  • A list of noteworthy console games (is there a separate nomination lot for handhelds? And what about PC??) in no particular order:

    Mass Effect 2
    Red Dead Redemption
    Heavy Rain
    Super Mario Galaxy 2
    Monster Hunter Tri
    Kirby’s Epic Yarn
    Disney’s Epic Mickey
    Donkey Kong Country Returns
    Fallout: New Vegas
    Super Street Fighter IV
    Assassin’s Creed II
    Battlefield: Bad Company 2

And though it isn’t out just yet, Gran Turismo 5 since it’s doubtful the thing will bomb.

  • I just finished Uncharted 2 and enjoyed every second. Very excited with the possibility of a third installment soon so… Uncharted 2 😛 (I know its old!)

  • I agree with several of the nominations above, but you also really need to add Alan Wake. One of the more atmospheric games of the year, the entire package just clicked with me.

  • ME2, it just keeps getting better with new dlc.

    RDR, Mafia2 and Alan Wake.

Medal of Honour, the weapon weight, destructable environments and sweeping vistas were awesome.

Enslaved too maybe. (I know the camera was bad, and the colours hurt the eyes, and the combat got old quickly, and the ending was a bit naf… but geez the animation / charecter modelling and the platforming was just so much better than, say, assasins creed).

I’m going to include Limbo too… because it’s on a console.

  • I would say bad company 2 or black ops, both are pretty awesome as far as FPS on a console goes, and I have gotten a boatload of playtime from both this year.

  • 1) Mass Effect 2
    2) Mario Galaxy 2
    3) Halo Reach
    4) Red Dead Redemption
    5) Rock Band 3

    special xbla mentions to
    Perfect Dark
    Super Meat Boy

    • and on the topic of DLC… Trials HD DLC Big Thrills coming out on December 1 along with Big Pack that came out earlier this year.

  • Heavy Rain, GoWIII, RDR, Brotherhood.

Added with GoW:GoS and Peace Walker, lo and behold, you have a list of my favourite games this year.

  • I’m going to nominate Demon’s Souls again this year, based on the technicality that it only actually got a local release this year, so it should be eligible 😛

  • Gonna vote for Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain, for both being games with involving and compelling stories that involved actual difficult choices that weren’t always black and white.
This is something we need more of in games.

  • It’s hard to think of any Wii games that stood out this year at all. Nothing’s blown me away like Little King’s Story or de Blob did in past years. I personally probably wouldn’t even put Galaxy 2 on my own list, I just felt so indifferent towards it. I have heard good things about Monster Hunter, so I guess I’d have to go with that. And people seem to be raving about DKCR even though it’s barely out at all. Otherwise, the Wii game I’ve plugged most hours into this year would be GH6 :/

  • My game of the year is Red dead redemption. The game came out of nowhere and smacked me in the face with its awesomeness, plus it has the best ending to a game I’ve seen in awhile. Oh and the hunting mechanics are genius, theres nothing more satisfying than stalking a rabbit, blowing it apart with a shotgun only to get mauled by a cougar.

Coming in second is Heavy Rain and third New Vegas (I’m only half way through aswell!).

  • Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood +1
I’ve only just started it, but it’s already everything I want in a videogame. Deep, immersive, plenty of awesome puzzles, and a ridiculous amount of missions to undertake. Plus all of the history involved in the story, climbing the Colloseum! I love this game 🙂

  • I’m going to go out on a limb and say Alan Wake. It’s different, and I really got into the story. It’s the first time a console game has kept me playing because I want to know what happens next.

Sadly I don’t think Halo Reach is up there at all.

  • Red Dead Redemption for value for money.
(Free DLC and the rest are useful ones you pay a decent price for!)

I’d have said Mass Effect 2, but still playing ME1, so can’t validly vote yet.
(That and prices plummet if you wait a few months.)

  • Um I’m gonna go with Mass Effect 2. The Mass Effect series are my favourite games this console generation and the second game improved on so much on a already awesome game.
Second place would go Alan Wake and then probably Bayonetta because of its insane, everything

  • I enjoyed both rdr and me2 but don’t think either should be GOTY. I believe it should go to god of war 3 for it’s insane amount of fun while playing that never gets old, or heavy rain for being an experience you can’t get anywhere else, with more game changing choices than you can throw a stick at. The level of polish in those games is immense, far exceeding rdr glitchy gameplay

  • Mass Effect 2 is easily my choice. Such a good rpg with its only weakness fixed, the shooting. Alan Wake second and Bayonetta third

  • 1. Darksiders
    2. Blur
    3. FF13 (it’s a popular whipping boy, I know, but *I* liked it)

I played ME2 on PC or I’d nominate that too (below the three above, though)
