Hopefully, Gears Of War 3 Has Some Of This In It

Whenever I see a new look at the Unreal Engine, I wonder: How will they use this in the next Gears of War? I did that in March. I'm doing it again with this brand-new look at the updated Engine.

This is a trailer for the latest iteration of the Epic Games' Unreal Engine, the graphics tech that powers not only the Xbox 360's Gears of War series but everything from the Mass Effect series to the gorgeous Enslaved: Odyssey To The West.

According to Epic, the new features added to the engine since we last highlighted in March are:

- light shafts a.k.a. god rays - depth of field for filmmakers - colour grading - cascaded shadow maps - point light shafts - full Scaleform GFx user interface package - SteamWorks support for online services

And what's that mean for Gears 3? I demand great god rays, Epic. You delayed Gears 3. Surely you can get them in there?

This is jaw dropping stuff, just gorgeous!
I want this to be the next Uncharted engine.
ND should have a look at this...not that their engine is rubbish!

Dude! That is just.. how do you say this? AWESOME!! I hope they add cascaded shadow maps into Gears 3.

All and good especially with integrated steamworks... but not releasing it on PC for whatever horsecrap reason Epic comes up with again means this technology is wasted on consoles...

It's like designing a new evolution of high octane fuel for speed which eventually gets used in a tractor.... what a waste.

"It’s like designing a new evolution of high octane fuel for speed which eventually gets used in a tractor"
...not to mention that when said tractor's engine eventually explodes from such misuse, people are going to be blaming either the tractor or the fuel, but conveniently ignore the dummy that thought to put one in the other in the first place!

The UNREAL engine is truly beautiful...I always look forward to a game that much more when I know it is being developed with it. It just seems to go from strength to strength.

    Damn that's pretty.

Just add Frostbites & DMM's destruction and i'd be one hell of a game.

I'm all for advancing tech, particularly since advances aren't as significant as say between 2005-2007. I just wish there was more engine variety in games these days, despite how awesome some UE3 games look like Mirrors Edge.

Aren't they working on UE4 for years now, and claimed it would only run on next-gen hardware? Release it on PC then. :P

The question remains, can Unreal 3 now render hair?

    Pretty awesome.
Unfortunately if it is used in something like Gears of War people will be too busy shooting stuff to pay attention to the scenery.

The unreal engine is real pretty but it's kinda boring... It's such a plain art style. I guess you have to see it working with something like Mass Effect before you can appreciate what it does properly.

I'm not too sure about the pulsating flora though...

This video is to all the people who think that Unreal Engine 3 is too old.

    Also fuck you.
