Report: Call Of Duty To Go Back To Future, Recruit 'Space Marines'

The people who helped create sci-fi horror adventure Dead Space may be taking the Call of Duty series to its final frontier, bringing the bloody war game into space and into the future.

According to a report from Gamasutra citing "industry sources", Activision studio Sledgehammer Games may be creating a Call of Duty "set in the future and feature, for lack of a better term, space Marines." The series has bounced from World War II to modern day to the Cold War era, fighting battles fictional and historically based, but never has it ventured into a science fiction based future.

Earlier this year, Activision noted that Sledgehammer would "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre," but did not provide further specifics about that teams entry in the series. Another Call of Duty game is planned for release late next year.

Analysis: What Lies Ahead For Call of Duty? [Gamasutra]

Do you think the space marines of the future will have figured out how to make a shotgun that doesn't need pumping after every shot and with an effective range of >2 metres? I can dream...

Only if the word 'nerf' is removed from the english vocabulary by then.

Maybe but with that new tech comes the likelihood of auto aiming sniper rifles with a possible range of as little as 2m.

Lets face it, this was bound to happen some day. and it will sell millions, and everyone will hate it, and then it we will be right back to WW2 FOREVER.

Screw that. Give me Warhammer 40k: Space Marine instead.

So basically Call of Duty is following the progression of the Battlefield franchise.

Personally I think we should be heading in the other direction, and recreating lesser known battles from the past - The Hundred Years War, the War of the Roses, some of the great Viking battles. That's where the future...I mean :p

This is an awesome idea that will be executed poorly.

This announcement has had a two-fold effect, it just killed Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Wait, I don't get it - is Sledgehammer made of ex-Visceral members?

I want MW3, if only for the cliffhanger ending of MW2's campaign:

Will Soap survive, get his voice back, and clear his name?

    The suspence. Is. Killing me.

I'm happy with this news. Call of Duty games are pretty fun but WW2 and modern day warfare doesn't really interest me. I've been waiting for Call of Duty: Future Warfare for a long time.

    Captains Log: Tactical Nuke incoming..
