Say Sayonara To Call Of Duty Swastikas

The Japanese version of Call of Duty: Black Ops is different. The game was retouched to tone down torture and graphic violence. That's not all.

According to the game's Japanese publisher Square Enix, the swastikas appearing on flags in the game's "zombie mode" were changed to the Iron Cross in the dubbed console and subtitled Windows versions. This change, however, was not made for the subtitled home console versions.

The reason for the change in the dubbed home console versions could be related to the fact that a counterclockwise swastika, or manji as it's called in Japanese, is traditionally used in The Land of the Rising Sun on maps to denote Buddhist temples. This mark, of course, has no relationship to the Nazi party. See the comparison above.

Perhaps, because the game is dubbed into Japanese, the inclusion of swastikas with Japanese voices might cause confusion for some players. That, however, doesn't explain why the symbols were removed from the Windows version. Kotaku is following up with Square Enix and will update should the company comment.

The swastika is used in so many ancient cultures from both European and Asian countires. It's a shame now that anyone seeing it will automaticaly think of Nazi's and never now it's true meaning.

As compared the "false meaning" of the Nazi swastika?

But yeah, I agree. Shame it will always be looked down upon as an "evil" symbol. Oh well.

Yeah but the Nazi's at least tilted it on its side to avoid confusion. I thought it was common knowledge they didn't invent the symbol itself and its primarily used for religious purposes.

What rubbish, treating the Japanese like children. They know full well who the nazis were, they're not THAT ignorant of world history...

The Japanese also continue to feel a collective guilt over ever being associated at all WITH the Nazis. Any further reminder of this is surely uncomfortable.

Does anyone know how COD World at War was modified in The Land of the Rising Sun (if at all) with its added references of the Imperial Army etc?

    Gee, this seems familiar...

(Wolfenstein 3d, PC to SNES comparison, bullshit censorship and all.)
