Sony Dev Rips Kinect Star Wars, Outs Move Lightsabre Game?

A top engineer for the PlayStation Move backhanded Kinect's upcoming Star Wars game as "scripted", called its notorious E3 demo "faked" and said a Star Wars Move game will "be damn better than Kinect's". Such a game hasn't been announced.

"I'm usually not very aggressive," said Anton Mikhailov to Eurogamer. He then proceeded to be just that. "But I will say [Move's Star Wars game]be damn better than Kinect could ever do."

He backed off when Eurogamer pressed for details.

"I'm not in the product planning division so unfortunately I can't tell you much more about that," Mikhailov said.

But he can tell you that Kinect makes for a terrible lightsabre game platform. "There's no way Kinect can do a good lightsabre game. Just never. Unless they give you a stick," he said. "If they give you a stick then they can do OK, but then they're going to ruin their whole no controller motto."

A demo shown at E3 appeared to be an on-rails experience. "I've seen the demo but it's so scripted, and wasn't it like, faked?" Mikhailov wondered.

For Move, on the other hand, "The fidelity is certainly there to do all sorts of Star Wars kid-style action," Mikhailov said. "You can very well do the lightsabre."

Mikhailov, who said Sony had also done research into 3D camera technology before settling on Move, wonders how Terminal Reality, which is building the Kinect game, is going to pull it off. "Technologically I find it hard how you can do a lightsabre, because there are so many ambiguities, and it's nearly impossible to track the angles of your wrists."

Kinect's Star Wars game will release sometime in 2011, Microsoft said earlier this month.

They're still making Star Wars games? Really?

Mr Lucas truly is a prostitute.

Not really. There is no problem with making SW games. The problem is making good ones.

Hey, better new Star Wars games (which can often be decent) than new Star Wars movies, yeah?

The only problem with Star Wars games is that they ignore the good ones and sequalise the crap ones.

No Republic Commando game but we get a Force Unleashed sequel that justifies itself with a moronic clone plot?

No new Dark Forces game but we get a pod racing game and all those crappy Clone Wars TV show games? Bring back Kyle Katarn you asshats! FPS games being the strongest selling genre of all time not a strong enough hint we want a Dark Forces remake?!?

Excuse me but I need to castrate my Lucas voodoo doll again.

        errr...Jedi Outcast...Jedi Academy...
they were the sequels to dark forces...
        I am not even trolling...

“Technologically I find it hard how you can do a lightsabre, because there are so many ambiguities, and it’s nearly impossible to track the angles of your wrists.”

What you mean like that one the hacker did in like 5 days after the kinect got released?

Could you use a long cardboard tube?

        he uses a stick.

Funny, I thought the point was that you would'nt need a controller or a prop for the Kinect???

You don't NEED one, but a star wars game with a light saber and nothing in your hand at all would feel silly to me. I think the stick is a better idea than what I see in that E3 demo.

Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

How does that contradict what Anton said in the interview? Earlier in the article, he is quoted as saying:

“If they give you a stick then they can do OK, but then they’re going to ruin their whole no controller motto.”

The framerate on that test is hideous. Not just a little bit bad, but totally unplayable. Obviously this is why he doesn't move quickly, just stood there swaying a little bit like he should be singing christmas carols.

I don't think this is one of kinects strong points.

You mean the one where the guy turned a broomstick into a lightsabre? Because I think he's talking about getting people to control a lightsabre without holding some kind of stand-in item. In which case the Kinect would need to be tracking what direction the person's hand is holding the non-existent lightsabre. I imagine it would indeed be pretty hard to quickly and accurately work out what direction a fist is facing at all times.

It's Ok, using force powers will be better on Kinect than on Move.

true that using the force on kinect would be hectic they should have named a game like that the force unleashed

i dont see how using on the kinect would be any better, if the game uses dual icecream controllers it would detect roughly the same hand movements that the kinect uses, plus it would actually feel like youre holding a pair of lightsabers (as its a saber of light the blade would have no weight, making the move controller feel exactly like a lightsaber ;)

force powers. you dont hold lightsabers to use force powers. you thrust your hand in motions, which is gay with a controller, and i cant choke you by choking the controller

Screw gimmicky lightsabre games, where's my Battlefront 3 dammit!?!

      This

Just another exec or high up over thinking everything..
Instead of buying a controller, having a wiimote or anything that costs $79.95, you could hold a broom handle.
As its not about the stick, thats the whole point, but you could HOLD a 20c plastic hilt.
I think this comes more down to design and implementation.

Maybe he should have just said that he thinks Kratos could totes kick Master Chiefs ass.
    !!BACK TO THE NINETIES!!

this is true except for the fact that microsoft has lorded over the fact that you dont need controllers or props for kinect, and have pushed it so hard that any game released in the next 12 months that uses controllers or props will be seen as back peddling, and will then make microsoft look like bullsh!t artists (because we know they arent right, right?) so unless this kinect star wars game is a year or so off (a star wars game with a decent dev cycle LOL) it wont have a prop and will be bad.

So basically the kinect could do these amazing things with a prop but microsoft shot themselves in the foot with their own marketing.

Wasn't one of Kinect's key features that you could scan in an every day item and use that? For instance a skateboard for a game, it doesn't seem like much back peddling to me.

GET OUT!! A sony rep saying that their product will be better then microsoft's... who would have thought! :P

I've got both Move and Kinect, and I'm finding Kinect much more fun. I honestly didn't expect it to be accurate at all, but its actually quite good. Move is good, but it just (to me) feels like another Wii

i played the kinect and while it is more accurate game play doesnt feel any more fluid then ps2 eye-toy games, and it will only appeal to me once someone does something amazing to incorporate both the kinect and the controller, but as i was saying to my friend the other day its a whole lot of money to spend on a complementary device

"A demo shown at E3 appeared to be an on-rails experience.

Argh, I don't know what happened here... there was a real comment, I swear! It went something like-

"A demo shown at E3 appeared to be an on-rails experience. “I’ve seen the demo but it’s so scripted, and wasn’t it like, faked?” Mikhailov wondered."

Cue a memory from E3 a couple of years ago with "ingame footage" of Killzone 2... which later turned out to be prerendered, "what we want it to look like".

So essentially he's saying that if Sony can't imagine it working then it has to be impossible. Wow... and they wonder why they have a reputation as being arrogant.

Lightsaber game on the Move? Count me in. Both have a huge lack of good games. Move has the upper hand on that though. You think companies would have learned from previous bad launch line ups.

Sure, a lightsaber game will probably be better with move. But then again, all I've heard from microsoft is that 'you' are the controller... Haven't heard anything about the absence of props.

Now move gamers, try to kick that guy in the face! Yea, you can only punch him...

Nah-uh. I can strap a Move controller to my foot and kick then. Keep adding more until i look like Mokap and then i can do the same stuff as Kinnect. So there. j/k.

Ok, This will be the 5th or 6th time i've posted this here.. BUT if you want this, but cooler go to camspace.com.

Get the demo or dev version and do as you will.
I've been following it for YEARS now.
