Bulletstorm Gives You Access To Gears Of War 3 Beta

It’s a familiar tactic – pair up new IP with beta access to an upcoming blockbuster and watch said new IP fly off the shelves. It worked for Crackdown with Halo 3, and now it looks like it’ll work for Bulletstorm, with Epic promising that each copy purchased will provide users access to the upcoming Gears of War 3 beta.

“Epic is poised to break new ground in 2011 with Gears of War 3 and Bulletstorm,” said Dr. Michael Capps, president of Epic Games. “With these two highly anticipated triple-A experiences comes a unique opportunity to do something to really excite players, and that’s what we intend to accomplish with the support of Microsoft Game Studios and EA. This is for the shooter fans.”

It’s a clever move, and we welcome it. It’s easy to be cynical about these things, but we’re hoping this sort of exercise will bring much needed attention to new titles such as Bulletstorm: a game that is geniunely trying to push the shooter genre in interesting new directions.

We have no idea when the Gear beta begins, but Bulletstorm is released February 24, and we’re really looking forward to what promises to be a fresh innovative take on an increasingly stagnant market.

  • Awesome.. does anyone know of any pre-order deals with Bulletstorm yet? I’m quite keen to actually get this one.

  • Any idea how this will work multiplatform? With Bulletstorm, I may choose to buy it on PC, and Gears 3 would be 360 exclusive. Would I still get a Gears 3 beta code buying Bulletstorm for PC/PS3 or do I need to buy the 360 version.

  • I like how he pushes it as a “unique” opportunity when, as Mark pointed out, the same thing was done with crackdown and halo 3.
Not that it’s unwelcome, but for a guy who’s talking to an industry ready to call a cop out, this is a ballsy or foolhardy move.

  • Any chance you can find out what the real story is with GoW3, Mark?

For a game that was originally going to be released around this time (and/or early next year), it’s now been pushed back twice – and it’s apparently finished. Now they’re having a beta?

I can understand there might be other, marketing, motives behind this move… but something seems fishy (and it’s not the water around Raven’s Nest…)

    • Gears 3 was only delayed once. When it was announced, it was announced that it would launch early April (April 4th IIRC). But then Microsoft is like, Herp Derp, we want MOAR monies, and we don’t have that many exclusives in 2011, so we’ll put all our bets on Gears. As a result, Gears 3 has been delayed to Fall 2011, or in normal speak, Spring 2011. The beta was announced shortly after the delay, because they now have more time. The delay was purely a business decision, the game was well on track to being released in April. Anyway, here’s the source:

      • Hmm. Thanks, that helps with the motives a bit – big holiday release.

All the same, I seem to recall they said something earlier this year to the effect of “the game’s all-but ready, however we’re giving it an April 2011 release date because the schedule is less crowded” – perhaps I’m confusing it with something else.

  • Damn stupid gimmicks games should stand on there own, not on the shoulder’s of other’s bulletstorm was looking good too but i can’t help but feel this is some sort of cop out
