Call Of Duty 'Phenom Booter' Use Lands British Teen In Slammer

A UK teen using a tool called "Phenom Booter" to kick players off Call of Duty servers back in September is now enjoying a stay in jail following an investigation by the Manchester police department.

Phenom Booter, which triggers a denial-of-service attack that can clear a server of specific users, or all of them, is a hack that had been shopped around forums earlier in this year. Type it into YouTube and you'll see a number of demonstrations. The e-cops were able to trace the attack to the Greater Manchester area and, ultimately, to the unidentified 17-year-old in question. He faces charge of violating the UK's Computer Misuse Act of 1990.

"Programs marketed in order to disrupt the online infrastructure not only affect individual players but have commercial and reputational consequences for the companies concerned," Detective Inspector Paul Hoare told the BBC. "These games attract both children and young people to the online environment and this type of crime can often be the precursor to further offending in more traditional areas of online crime."

Is this a PC-only program? I was on some XBL games last week and was getting constant lag spikes every 6-8 seconds. It was like the host was throttling their connection, because the connection bars were jumping from green to yellow to red and back again, then after 6 seconds it would do it again.

And the central servers didn't attemp a host migration, I guess because the spikes weren't enough to grant one...?

The Xbox is surprisingly easy to hack, believe it or not.

As to your specific question, I don't believe it was a hack, I think that perhaps their ISP has the same issue mine used to. I was told it had something to do with having a dynamic IP address, and the way in which it is throttled.

      Maybe that was the issue?

      i smell a lag switch
that or you have a connection issue

Noticed the same earlier this week. More importantly I noticed it only happened to one team. I changed lobby immediately after and haven't seen it since.

I had a dynamic IP on my old Internode account and had zero problems.

lag switches can only be used if you host, and you know if someone is using one if the host has full green connection, everyone else has red, you can barely move around while the host goes on a killing spree.

If your situation happened with multiple people, each a different host, I'd say the chances of a lag switch are very slim. Most likely a network/ISP error.

    Hire that lad!

      lolwut

I think he might be what they used to call a "scriptkiddie".
