DC Universe Online Heroically Dated And Priced

Sony Online Entertainment transforms PlayStation 3 and PC gamers into superheroes and super villains on January 11 with the release of DC Universe Online. How much will you pay to battle alongside the likes of Batman, Superman, and Lex Luthor?

With the beta well underway on both the PC and PlayStation 3, it was only a matter of time before Sony Online Entertainment revealed the official release date for its once delayed comic book MMO. Now we've got a firm date in January 11 for North America (January 12 in Europe and 14 in the UK and Ireland), along with word on how much we'll need to set aside on a monthly basis to don tights and fight (or perpetrate) crime.

The PlayStation 3 version of the game will retail for $US59.99, while the PC version comes in $US10 cheaper at $US49.99. Both versions come with one month of free play. After that a $US15 (€12.99) a month subscription fee kicks in, though PC players will be able to purchase a lifetime subscription for $US199 (€179.99).

I was really looking forward to getting this game but all these extra fees are a big turn off. Full retail price + monthly subscriptions? This isnt gonna go well.

And this differs from 95% of other AAA MMOs ... how? That model has been around since Ultima Online.

I think in reference to the OP, the question is how successful that model has been to the AAA MMO titles. The OP may have a point that this model may well lead to poor sales. I'm sure the creators of Champions online, LOTR online and D&D Online would probably agree.

I believe if you want your game to topple the WoW behemoth then you can't do it on its terms. Come at it from the sides.

I hate to say it, but I've seen nothing in this game that says it will be anything more than a low to moderate success. I hope I'm wrong too, cause I am a fan of DC.

I'm in the PS3 beta, but I haven't even been able to get through character creation without getting disconnected.

NO. NO. NO. YOU GIVE ME A BETA. I'M NOT GOING TO PAY FOR A GAME, THEN PAY SUBSCRIPTION FEES, THEN GET A CRAPPY GAME.
