Forza Motorsport 4 Has Kinect Under The Hood

We've known that Microsoft's racing contender, Forza, would get controller-free Kinect support in some fashion since E3. Microsoft makes it doubly official today, naming Forza Motorsport 4 as the Kinect-powered "definitive racing game of 2011."

Forza developer Turn 10 Studios already pegged Forza 4 for a late 2011 release date at this weekend's Spike TV Video Game Awards, courtesy of a mostly gameplay-free teaser trailer. Also teased at that show was the Top Gear (USA) branding, which, combined with the option to play with Kinect controls, will "create an automotive experience unlike anything before it".

If that's not enough hyperbole for you, check out this snippet from the Forza 4 press release.

"Forza Motorsport 4" will be the most expansive and vividly realistic automotive experience across any console, bringing you closer to the edge than you've ever been before. Through the power of Kinect, players will be able to step through the TV screen and jump into the driver's seat while the engaging controller-based experience will let you take on the bone-jarring physics, unparalleled levels of customisation, and rosters of dream cars and tracks. Offering gameplay that will electrify racing fans and excite car lovers and novices alike, the highest-rated racing franchise of this generation returns in fall 2011.

Wow, that does sound pretty cool. It certainly sounds way better than just sitting there with your arms out like you were holding an invisible steering wheel. That would be absolutely shithouse.

      haha :D

I think Forza is too hardcore to ONLY allow for holding your hands in the air type controller. Specifically referring to the "while the engaging controller-based experience" part, make me think that this will actually be incorporating TrackIR type head tracking etc while using the controller. I am betting that thie will be a hybryd control where kinect only enhances the experience, not makes it essential.

Think about it driving is not performed standing up so while there may be an arcade type option for this, i doubt it will form the basis of this game. Turn 10 have made quality after quality so i do not doubt this will be interesting one bit.

        On the headtracking...
I fired up the yourshape demo that came with Kinect Adventures...
While the demo was loading, I sort of leaned and rocked on my heels... the screen moved around to match my chenged viewpoint.
        It was brilliant.

If this allows me to look through the corner or turn my head to check on the car passing etc, then we really will have made a step forward in racing games...

Very hard to pull off in natural way though... considering the screen doesn't move with your head.

Real driving games still need a wheel.

Just a thougt why not use the controls that are used in a real car, hmmm a Steering Wheel!!!

    This is just nonsense.

What i want to know is when are all the games that will use kinekt as leaning, like a motorcycle game where you have to lean into the corners, while still using the controller to actually, you know, control the game :P

Head tracking in GT5 works fine for me but it's unnatural because even though you're turning your head, your eyes need to be pointing forward the whole time which is not what you do in real life.
