Game Of The Year 2010: The Readers’ Choice Award

Game Of The Year 2010: The Readers’ Choice Award

Capturing more than 12,000 of the nearly 30,000 votes cast in our Game of the Year poll, this cross-platform game captured Kotaku’s 2010 Readers’ Choice Award.

No, it’s not Red Dead Redemption.

Congratulations to Mass Effect 2, which earned more than 40 per cent of the total votes for game of the year. Call of Duty: Black Ops came in second with about 24 per cent and Red Dead Redemption took third with more than 17 per cent of the votes. NBA 2K11 took nearly 8 per cent of the vote.

The remaining 9 per cent or so went to a wide variety of games as write-ins, including Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Fallout: New Vegas, God of War III, Halo: Reach and StarCraft II.

Stay tuned later today for the official Kotaku Game of the Year announcement. We’ve posted our early thoughts on the four finalists and decided over the weekend which game should get the final nod. Keep in mind, those early discussions were designed to let you see some of the process, not to show you our decisions.

  • Wow, so only 3 major games that really resonated with Kotaku readers last year?

I didn’t enjoy Mass Effect, but I guess that gametype just isn’t my cuppa tea.

  • Quite surprised to see Black Ops get so many votes… what exactly about it is “Game of the Year” material? Played it, quickly got bored of it as I realised I had already played the game twice.

  • Loved both games but the story of ME2 had me on my seat more than RDR which seemed to just coast along in most parts. Gameplay, graphics and sound was great for both but it was the great ending of ME2 that got it across the line for me.

Also I think it’s pretty safe to say that many Kotaku readers are PC gamers. No RDR on the PC.

  • I’m sorely dissapointed.

Not with Mass Effect… that was an awesome decision.

But how the heck did Black Ops get number 2?

    • I suspect that a lot of people would have been torn (like me) between ME2 and RDR, while shooterholics would have just plonked straight for Black Ops.

    • That’s probably got a lot to do with it but I think the fact that it doesn’t offer a lot more over the original had an impact too.

      • starcraft? haven’t played that since the original came out… what i’ve seen of it didn’t seem that different, substance wise.

  • I think fanboyism is why Black Ops came second. Bit of a shame, would’ve liked to see a proper duke out between ME2 and RDR. I’m not complaining though, happy to see ME2 come out on top.

  • i do wonder what i’ll do for gaming when the Mass Effect, Assassin’s Creed franchises finish their stories (ME3, AC:B, AC3 – PC, that is).

Maybe by then there’ll be another Fallout or Stalker? Or a Metro 2034?

    • Mass Effect? Finish!?? :'(

The sales have been fairly good; I would’t put it past EA/Bioware to milk the franchise (remember it’s IP and not a licence) for all its worth. Have already heard rumours of an FPS multiplayer spin-off.
