Morrowind Mod Pack Put To The Sword

Hope you grabbed that big Morrowind mod pack released the other day, because it's tough to find at the moment.

Turns out the man responsible for the package didn't get the approval of all the individual mods whose work was included, and after a succession of requests and threats Morrowind 2011 is now "under attack", with its torrent links being blocked.

"The...problem here...was that when the package came out, a few modders (myself included) contacted the compiler and simply asked for [him]to a) ask permission to use the mods and b) remove ones that he couldn't get permission for," one of the included mod's creators tells Joystiq.

"Just a bit of respect for the modders who put their time and effort in, and most of us would've given permission if asked."

While Morrowind 2011's creator (compiler?) defends his actions by stating that credits for the individual mods were included as part of the pack, that doesn't escape the fact the mods were used without the permission of their creators, some of whom believe that this constitutes a violation of copyright law.

Pity. Like the modder above says, a little courtest would have gone a long way, and we'd now all be enjoying a new take on the role-playing classic instead of having dirty laundry aired all over the place.

I'm not a regular on the modding scene by any means, but the most common remark about reuse of work I see in publicly released mods is "use this if you want, but give credit", which seems to be what this guy has done. Perhaps there's an etiquette within the community that I'm not aware of as an outsider, but 'the norm' (as percieved by this outsider) appears to have been complied with.

That is, of course, unless some of the included mods were not public domain. In which case, yeah that's a bit dodgy.

(Got it early, thanks games.on.net for the hosting and free dl >.>)

this too is what ive seen. and ive seen alot of angry backlash at people who DONT give credit. im guessing its must vary between modding communities.I know full well that TES mods can and do go to war over very small details, yet the STALKER mod community is the opposite.

To me this seems more like the mod pack has a few mods in there that certain mod makers hated as thats the only way i can see this being as bad as it is.

Either way this a shame because this is something alot of people would like to see not just for morrowwind, but also oblivion. with how unstable the games get with more mods having a pack that have been tested and laidout with full instructions is rather big undertaking.

This is why we can't have nice things.

It's a pack containing mods that can be downloaded separately for free. The idiots that complained about it just want their own personal praise.

      Very true.
As long as he didn't claim it as his own (which he didn't) they shouldn't have kicked up such a stink.

If put hours into something and then saw another person using it without your consent or permission you would be pissed off to. They are only looking for a bit of respect. Which is only fair if you ask me, alot of work can go into mods.

They were getting respect by having their work credited in the package. Your comment would hold weight if the mods were used by the compiler claiming they were his, and the mods cost money effectively depriving the modders of income.

The mods were free and this person put them together in a user friendly fashion which would in turn give the modders more exposure to a wider audience. Its a win/win situation that has been ruined by a few people who are short sighted.

I wish I downloaded this earlier. I fucking hate these people, it's impossible to get a working pack of mods with a load order because they have a hissy fit over their mods being redistributed.

I sure do love your mods guys when you make me spend 13 hours installing and testing them.

It appears to still be up on games.on.net with all the instructions...

Oh thank god, I had downloaded the pack the other day meaning to come back and install it later on. I went back to the original site only to find it have been taking down.

You just saved my life Mr. Prior.

Cheers, nabbed it before it disappears.

Typo! Perhaps you meant to type "courtesy" instead?

Damn. Was going to download that last weekend. Will have to get it now!
