Talk Amongst Yourselves

This is where Kotaku readers go to talk about the stuff we’re not already posting about. Think of it as the official unofficial Kotaku community forum.

You can talk about games. Or movies. Or politics. Music. Food. Science. Sport. Insert your own miscellaneous off-topic discussion here. Just keep it clean.

We’ll be promoting this post each morning until Sunday to let the conversation continue all week. Makes more sense than starting a new comments thread every day.

Talk amongst yourselves below…

    I just couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t.
I thought I posted decent times that people would struggle to beat.
I was at least a whole second or two ahead.
It only took 12 hours *twitch*
    12 HOURS!
Then my time *twitch* was beaten.
No not by 1 person… oh no no. By about *twitch* 5.
    I just couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t.
I thought I posted decent times that peo...

Is this for Trials or Doritos...am I still second in Doritos?

        *twitch* Doritos.

This is how I sum up my efforts in the competition:

It burst into flames! Get out of the way! Get out of the way! Get this, Charlie! Get this, Charlie! It's fire and it's crashing! It's crashing terrible! Oh, my! Get out of the way, please! It's burning, bursting into flames and is falling on the mooring mast, and all the folks agree that this is terrible. This is the worst of the worst catastrophes in the world! Oh, it's crashing... oh, four or five hundred feet into the sky, and it's a terrific crash, ladies and gentlemen. There's smoke, and there's flames, now, and the frame is crashing to the ground, not quite to the mooring mast... Oh, the humanity, and all the passengers screaming around here!

    Super Give Away Competition 1!
    ______________________________

To mark the inaugural episode of the Super Give Away Competition, I want to do something the is very Kotaku. Something that says "Playing

Games" and "Creating a Community". As such, I've decided that the first competition will be a video game competition.

It was difficult trying to find something that is accessible and cheap that everyone can play, but finally I settled on "Chime". It's

cheap, easy to pick up, and should play on almost any PC or laptop (no Mac support sorry). It was also part of the Steam treasure hunt, so

I figured some of you would already have it. If you don't own it, it's well worth the $5USD it costs anyway.

    So for the competition...

    Prerequisites:
    --------------
    1. Download Steam if you haven't, and install it
    2. Join the existing Unofficial Kotaku Australia Group, so I know you're in (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/kotakuaust)
    3. Send a friend invite to "Mr Explody", so I can keep track of the leaderboard (http://steamcommunity.com/id/MrExplody)
    4. Buy and Download Chime, if you don't already have it - USD $4.99 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/62100/)

    Challenge
    -------------

Once you have completed the prerequisites, jump into the game.

By 08:00PM Sunday 16th January, the person who has the highest score on the following level will win:
    Mode: Timed Mode
    Level: Paul Hartnoll (Orbital)
    Time Limit: 3 Minutes

Note, you must have completed the Prerequisites to be eligible to win! If I can't find you on the leader board, or can't find you in the

Kotaku Australia Steam Group, then you can't win.

    Prize:
    ------
As it is the inaugural competition, the winner of this week's challenge will get to choose one prize from any in the bundle.
    http://www.explodingstudios.com/general/bundle.jpg

Essentially, thats a choice of one from the following:
    - Halo Legends Blu Ray
    - Halo Poster
    - Iron Man 2 Soundtrack Vinyl
    - Dead Rising 2 T-Shirt
    - Dark Void Figurine
    - Lost Planet 2 Mech Figurine
    - Super Meat Boy sticker
    - Magic the Gathering Card Set

I will contact the winner next week

would be so keen but due to living arrangements no internet at home ATM :( only access to Kotaku is at work..

      good luck all :)

      That is a brilliant idea
      That is a brilliant game
      This is a brilliant comp

You, sir, are brilliant and i want to nuzzle into you.

Sounds good, except as you posted this on the 17th and the end of the competition is the 16th...

        Yeh I just realised that.

Cutoff is 8:00PM Sunday 23rd January!

        Not the 16th.

Haha - you should've kept it as the 16th - anyone can get a high score on a game, but mastering time travel - that really separates the men from the boys!

A Couple of things, disclaimers and such:
      1. The cutoff date is 8:00PM Sunday 23rd Jan, not the 16th which has already past.

      2. The competition is for Australian residents only, I simply can't afford to send the items overseas

      3. This competition is not an official Kotaku competition, Kotaku, Allure Media nor it's subsidies do not have any control or responsibilities on the running of the competition or it's outcome.

      4. Items will be shipped as is. Not that they're in a bad way. The Dark Void 2 figurine however has a punture box (the figurine is fine though). The MTG cards are pretty old but range between used through mint condition.

      5. I reserve full judgement rights. If for some reason I believe you are cheating, I reserve the right to remove you from the competition.

      6. Judges decision is final.

      7. I will contact the winner over Steam, so if you're in the running, make sure you check it periodically.

      8. When you sign up to the Kotaku AU Steam group, drop a comment in there with your Kotaku handle if your Steam handle is different.

thats freaken awesome! Also, was Mr Explody from that cartoon which Stimpy made? Wilbur Cobb, lepper legend.

YES! That was the insipration. Nobody else has ever guessed that!

Explody was the main character from the Ren and Stimpy Meta cartoon.

        Well done to you sir!

Surely he wins a prize for that? :P

All the kids are enjoying it these days. Its all the rage.
Its better than bad its good, its... LOG!

You can't reference Log without posting the video

              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hP0kWqJJZa4

it's LAWG LAWWWG, it's big it's heavy it's wood, it's LAWG LAWWWG, it's better than bad, it's good!

My husband sings that whenever we change our son's nappy and there's something solid in there....

I used to call em Kinder Surprises. Thank god I'm past that stage! My eldest starts high school in 2 weeks... christ that makes me feel old.

      Mr Explody

Please do a future comp on 360.
My game time = my wife's net time...

I've been tossing this idea up, but not sure how best to run it. Something like a 1 on 1 Halo Reach competition or something similar.

The problem is organising the tournament, collaborating with all participants, and capturing the results.

Any ideas, or volutneers to help in running such a thing would be greatly appreciated.

I dont own Halo and am on Silver/free.

          Thanks anyway dood!

I might have a spare 2 month gold trial lying around somewhere. I'll let you know if I find it.

As for the game, Halo Reach is just a suggestion. Might have to put it out for poll to ensure we get the most coverage.

I no longer own any Multi games that aren't Arcade

              I have:
              Doritos
              Perfect Dark
              Duke Nukem

              and that is all.

Pick a cheapie Arcade game or a bargain bin game!

I've joined, purchased, added invite for friend. Now I'm hooked! But, I really suck at it! I'm struggling to cover the whole board, but it is very addictive :D

I've joined the group. Will add friend later when I'm home (looks like you need the client to run).

Pretty sure I won't compete in the competition, but I've got no friends/community on Steam. And I'd be keen for anything in the future.

Changed my mind. Gave it a shot. Not a bad game, very similar to Lumines. Which isn't a bad thing as Lumines is my favourite puzzle game ever.

I wish I could play but I can't afford to buy it yet. :( Sad that I can't even russle up $5 :0 Oh wells.. Hopefully the figurines will last til another event!

I don't know exactly why but i'm excited to discover an unoficial kotaku au group exists on steam. Just joined it (steam alias g_m_it).

Don't thin i'll by trying this comp but. Too much to do this week.

Yeh, I only discoverred it when I went to create one myself for this comp.

I don't know when or who started it, but there were very few members in there till we started flooding it 2 days ago.

New week new begginings and a new thread to begin the SPAM

Also, LOL @ 20th century Welbot.

I missed last week's post and when I went to check it, there were over 1,300 posts. Very daunting when just reading them on the morning commute in.

Can someone give me a wrap up of the goings on? Gotta have my gossip fix!

Lots of TadMod counting and people talking about TadMod counting :D

    Hey there guys and gals!

I'd just like to announce 3 new tees to my webstore!
There are 2 Limited Edition Kotaku "Basic" designs, and one new " Premium Range" Fallout New Vegas Tee.
So all the designs this week are basic as i'm now working on a brand new Zelda-Inspired tee (that's right you crazy fans), which i hope to launch sometime this week for you all.

So without further blabbering, i present to you, first of all, the new "Limited Edition" Kotaku tees, which i have knocked up to celebrate 1000+ posts on TAY last week. A new milestone for our spectacular community.

    http://www.chuloopaoverload.toctopus.com/shop?c=333568&ctype=0

The first thing you'll notice is both shirts are cheaper/much cheaper than the rest of my tees. This is because i'm only charging wholesale on all Kotaku tees. I will be making NO PROFIT from the sale of ANY Kotaku tees now or ever. Consider them a gift from me to you, that you still have to pay for.

First up, the "Kotaku United" Mens and Ladies tees, both available in Black or White.
    Closer look here:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/0903/trozza/?action=view&current=kotaku_united.jpg
As you can see, it is a slightly modified version of the Kotaku Logo. I've added a small "au" to the logo, as well as what i feel is a fitting slogan for the community.
Basic and very easy on the eye. I hope you guys enjoy it and agree with the subtext i've gone with.

Secondly, the "TAY Survival" tee. This is a mens classic fit tee availble in white only at this point.
    http://www.chuloopaoverload.toctopus.com/shop/view_product/TAY_Survival?n=1673448
You'll notice this one is much closer to the price of my other tees. This is because i have both a Front and Back print on this tee. It features the bold text you see here, as well as the aformentioned "Kotaku United" logo on the back cloes to the top of the shirt.
So yes, this is still wholesale, but you're just paying more for the 2 lots of print.

Now we come to the shirt that is earning my bread and butter. The shirts that all other apparel vendors reffer to as their "premium range".

The I <3 New Vegas Tee. This is a classic fit mens tee available in both black and white.

    http://www.chuloopaoverload.toctopus.com/shop?c=328368&ctype=0

As you can see, it's a rather basic design based on the classic "I <3 NY" Tees. The tee features a sihloette of a Radscorpion in place of the heart to give it a glorious wasteland flavor.

The original version had good 'ol pip boy giving the thumbs up instead of the Scorpion, but i changed the design as i was worried about copyright infringements. I'll look into it more and see if i can do one with a pip boy or not.

So that's it for today - I'll probably add another Kotaku Tee design this week, as well as the big unveil of the killer new Zelda Tee i'm working on. Also, as of this weekend, i have now sold a total of 8 Commander Sheapard tees. Once again i would like to extend my thanks to you all. Your support is astounding and is helping me do something i have always wanted to do. Thank everyone.

On a side note, if you have an idea for a Kotaku Tee that you can put together, spend a little time and shoot me an email at the usual place (troy.clearyathotmaildotcom) and i will have it uploaded to the site so that your design can be printed, with your name in the credit. As i said, i make NO money from any Kotaku branded tees, so think of it like a community project, in a way. If you do want to put one together, make sure the final image is at least 300dpi, quite large and most importantly in .png format.

Thanks for you time and support, guys and girls!
    Chuloopa, OUT!

Woot! I love the TAY shirt! I have to save up for my rego this month, but let my brain try and cook up a T idea for you. Nice work mate :D
Oh, just as an idea, what is the biggest shirt you have? Not that I'm fat, its more that my body shape has somewhat distorted due to my back probs.... :(

The classic fit tees go as large as 3xl, mate :)

Awww, I'm leaving on Friday so there won't be enough time to get one here before I go.
The black one would have been perfect to wear on my holiday/belated honeymoon.

Ooo. I design Tshirts too! Check ma sh!t. Nothing gamer related yet.

      http://www.redbubble.com/people/ezylee/shop/t-shirts

        Competition....

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Hahaha! "Splader" I kinda want that one.

That is actually a piss take of a local clothing brand 'Spader'

          http://spaderclothing.com/

That's some seriously cool stuff, mate :)

Love the combi van one :)

I've got a friend that would go ape-shiz for that, especially seeing as it's green. lol

Also, Redbubble is the place i couldn't think of that i wanted to put my shirts on before i settled for toctopus..

How's the quality of the shirts from redbubble, mate?

I am really picky on the shirts I wear. I hate the ill fitting shirts with massive sleeves, if you have any american apparel shirts. They are exactly the same as that.

              Can you choose the cut?
I am very familiar with AA shirts.
One of the brands we stock is a AA block, and it's terrible. Exactly what you described as what you hate. lol

That being said AA has A LOT of different cuts... A LOT!!!
              http://www.americanapparel.com/men-basic-t-shirts.html

And that's just their basic shirts...

You can choose a standard shirt, a v-neck and a girly shirt.

I will ask my wife for permission to buy one of these Kotaku shirts.

      Kotakese UNITE!!!

        Permission granted!!!

Dude, who does the art for your T-shirts? My younger brother is a designer, finishing his diplomas and doing design work the promo stuff at Event Cinemas and would probably love to try his hand at this kind of thing. Shoot me a message on Facebook if you're at all interested.

I do all the designs, mate :)

While i'd be keen to get more people involved, i'm not sure how i would work out commissions and the such.. it's sort of a grey area so far lol

I can talk to him about what he's doing for some friends of his, they've got him working on a band album art. He might even do it just for the line on his resume and a free shirt :P

Love the shirts, my one criticism is, I feel like the rad-scorpion should be the other way around, I know that's impractical, and it would look weird, but I think it would look more like a heart that way...

        haha it's ok, mate.
        I get what you mean!
I'll have a look at it tonight for you :)

Just remember, there's no use changing it just for me, as I have no way of buying these, without begging from my parents.

    AHEM! *clears throat*

I would like to make an announcement.

Everyone has their cool names but me. Looking at you Chuloopa.
I regret logging on with facebook.

    SOOOOOOOOOOOO

Imma using my gaming alias from now on.

      TRISTOSTERONNNEEEEE!!!!
      *FLEX*

So, we call you Tristan now just to shit you?

It wont last. No one can resist the pure pleasure of the name "Tristosterone" passing through their lips.

        Say with me now...

        Tris-tos-te-rone

          Testotebone!

          Fine... have it your way.

            Mmmm Toblerone.

Thats what I call my dog Toby sometimes.

Don't know if any of you have seen these but they made me laugh.. Mainly cause my nephew insists I watch this show with him now, but from now i'll be picturing Sesame Street Fighter!

    http://www.redbubble.com/shop/sesame+street+fighter+stickers

    **Doritos Crash Course Competition**

The competition started out quite tough but by mid week, everyone sort of stopped trying (or at least did not get any better). I am putting this down to the insane skillz of Batguy, posting an unbeatable time and basically taking the wind out of all our sails.

I think that perhaps the prize for winning should be that for this week, you get to change your name to Batguy #1 or something?

So without further anything, here are the times.

    Batguy - 29.202
    Jimu Hsien - 30.140
    Blaghman - 31.439
    FatShady - 31.704
    Tristosterone - 32.351
    AmbroseIV - 32.366
    Banderdash - 38.322
    Chuloopa - 47.207

So, to make it a bit harder this time, assuming that you are all still keen on competing, this weeks track is the first one from Europe!
It should be a more complex track with more room for improvement.

I will also point out that any new people can join in on this as it is just being run week by week. Just send me a Friend Request on XBL (FatShady live) and say you want in!

    Cheers,

I could see how I might get another 1-1.5 seconds, but frustration and little mistakes got the better of me... Batguy's time is just insane - well done :P

      LOL!!
I didn't get a chance to get onlien at all last week.. wow... 47, how horrible!!

I'll try to rank up a bit better on europe 1 this week :P

        Chuloopa...

Just, just get out man. Just go.

Glad to see that my shock-and-awe tactics worked so well :)

It was good fun though, thanks for the challenge. Between this comp and Super Meat Boy I almost feel like I have still have some 1337 gamer skill left in these 32 year old fingers. I look forward to crashing back to the pack in this week's comp.

I'll admit that I was a little surprised that nobody got closer in the end though. By the time I finished I was getting under 30 every single time, so I was really worried that somebody else was going to work out the slide sequence and beat me with a lucky run. I even took another 0.18 off my time on Saturday night to be sure!! My final time ended up in the top 300 or so (once you discard the 650+ zero scores at the top of the table) so I figured it was going to take some beating.

      - Batguy #1 - my thumbs still hurt (seriously) from posting a record time in Crash Course and all I got was this lousy title!

did you not get my time? I sent freind requests to you all.. I can see Jimu and Tristosterones times on my xbox.. anyway, I'm at 31.x can't recall exactly, but yeah! Maybe you guys need to check your messages!

what is your gamertag???? I have the times with me so i can update.. I was not sure about you.

          welbot is my gamertag

didnt get a request mate... sorry.

I still can't access xbox.com at work so please send another FR and ill accept immediately.

      Yes!
      Number 2 number 2...

There was no way I could beat my score...I kept getting very close and then my hands betrayed me!

Also my eyes were going to sleep!

Can we take out times for Europe map one from yesterday? Because I think I was winning then. Although, maybe not, still, bound to be better than when you all actually start trying. :/

The comp is who has the best time by the end of the week. Because no-one knows which track is next, there is no unfair advantage so discounting times from a prior week is not required. If you set such a good time two weeks ago that can't be beat, then good luck to you.

I was just being a dick, I'm not that stupid.

          Sorry.

Just sent a friend request (GT same as name here). I got crash course weeks ago, but have not played it yet. This gives me a reason too.

It's amusing to see the difference between the first level, that everyone powered hard on, and this one, where barely anyone has. As I type this, I am in the top 1600 in the world, for what was merely an okay run.

      Silly people.

Hey I just discovered this yesterday! How the hell did you guys get under 33 on that first track? What the heck!? I don't see how I can do it any faster :'(

Sliiiiiiide. Many many many times - 21 to be exact. I probably take 4 or 5 steps total over the course of the map.

    I have been shamed..

After being the gamer/tech guy of the household..

    *sigh*

Bee got an android phone before me... *cringe*
She got the HTC Desire yesterday, and i'm still using my Nokia N95 8GB....

I am shamed... i am shamed so hard...

Also, seeing as i don't have one, therefore i don't know the answer.. how can she stop things from auto DL so she doesn't go over her (shitty) 3 DL limit...

I have been using a Nokia 1110 since 2006. It uses 2 colors to display images on screen: Black, and green. It is capable of calling people, receiving calls, texting people and receiving texts. That is all I want my phone to do. I have dropped it many a time on concrete, and it lives to tell the tale. It is an awesome phone :)

My phone is capable of displaying at least 4 colours (I think it's 16 bit colours, not sure though), all of them garish, it is missing its battery case, and only receives call occasionally.

Nevertheless, I love my phone, as it is a flip phone.

      http://androidforums.com/htc-desire-hd/202720-data-allowance.html

There is nothing wrong with being number two or "The First Loser"

There's no shame in being beaten by both your sister and mother, whose knowledge of technology is almost shamefully bad (admittedly, this is just with iPhones/smarthphones, compared to my Nokia blob).

    http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/comment/9/2011/01/ba790f2292ef2599a227eade323f55ec/original.png

    That is all.

I like that his sunnies have gone over his actual glasses

You learn quickly to always wear your glasses when attempting bad-ass things. After the first time you miss, and manage to poke yourself in the eye with the ear piece of the sunnies.

So which lovely Kotaku member is gonna by me my new gaming seat

    http://www.sumolounge.com/sumosac-gamer.php?re=na

You can include the lovely lady, i wont complain

Nah, you could buy a beanbag from Kmart or somewhere and still have enough left over to buy some err...companionship. Much better deal.

oooo, dem fighting words there Strange.

Go go go go go go

This is the second fight you've tried to start this morning. I'm onto you...

            I don't start them...

            I just encourage them...

            same same but different

I saw these a few weeks back and got all excited. Realising I am poor I went for the next best thing - a beanbag. Now we have about a million left over beads (beans?) in the cupboard and an uncomfortable bean bag that noone sits on.

i was thinking a cheap bean bag then i realized it would be a waste because i wouldn't use it if it wasn't comfy

Yeah and by the time you buy the bag and all the beans, it's not really that cheap either :/

I showed my fiance this on the weekend, and she was totally all for it. But then I clicked on the AU version of the site, and they only had the Omni bean bag, which is more of a giant pillow.

I'll need to verify that they can ship the gamer one in Australia before committing.

Let me know the answer... I too have been eyeing one off.

I got one last year and at that point you could only get the Omni in Aus.

I know it looks like a giant pillow but if you sit it on its end you can use like a huge bean bag rather than on its side like a pillow.

My only real complaint is it can be hit and miss with the comfort sometimes. You have to get the position right from the start and if you don't its really a matter of get up, reset (hit the bag) and start again. If you do get it right, its REALLY comfy, but if you don't get it right its just awkward. You cant move your ass around to get the position right like with a normal bean bag.

Finished Jade Empire over the weekend.

Hope the Biodoods have a sequel up their sleeve.

Ha! Doubt it, considering they didn't even finish the first one. *grumbles* stoopid half-a-game sucking me in....

        Huh?

        What happened?

Do you have a link to an article? Didnt finish?

        I thought it was fun!

        WHAT HAPPENED????!!!!

Did you not notice the huge world map of which you got to visit about 3%? Apparently they had a few other chapters/places they meant to do but ran out of time. Can't remember the story exactly due to the fogginess of old age.

Also Jimu #2?!!! Did you eat #1? Spit him out! NOW!

            I was wondering about that.

There was a big break between me almost finishing it and me finishing it. I am doing a closed fist replay now to remember what went on.

There is only ever two areas available on the map I think. The first and last never appear.

Also experience seems to jump from 10xp for a scroll read to 2000exp for a scroll read, rather quickly.

Theres still a fair bit to the game.

From a narrative perspective there isn't enough game between the mid-game twist (Which is far closer to end game than mid) and the end of the game when you revisit the same place!

Also yes I did eat myself, I may change my name to Ouroborous Jimu Hsien!

I hope so too, but not very likely :(

It didn't sell hugely well, and they've had a lot more success with ME/DAO to go back to their older games.

I was kinda hoping that after they finish the ME trilogy they would feel like break from Sci Fi and do another Jade.

That guy in charge of DA doesn't look like he's interested in anything else!

My puppy, Tobias Dr.Who Hennessy Cooper, pooped on the deck again this morning.

    His punishment:

I took him to the vet and he got a thermometer up his ass.

    I need your help!

I've got a massive paper due on the 30th (but I need mine handed in by wednesday because I'm busy after that)

I need you guys to help me find any magazine articles/books/studies that talk about:
    1) Violent video games and their effect on users
    2) Addiction to computers
    3) The inability of the user to distinguish between the virtual and real world.

I know I can count on you guys! :D

    Tad

You'd be better off going to Fox News.

But anyway, if there was a category for taking games out of context, you could just go to http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/12/the-year-in-controversies/

Also I think Game Informer had an article on one of those categories, and there was a study a few weeks back saying that games weren't as big a factor in affecting kids as socioeconomic status (and other stuff) was.

But clearly I've taken stuff from the other side of the argument :/

        And some new articles:

        http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/01/cnn-takes-on-the-child-gaming-addiction-study/

        http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/01/study-child-after-child-is-a-gaming-junkie/

Rawr. Not a lot of time on my hands, but found this:

"Being in the World (of Warcraft): Raiding, Realism, and Knowledge Production in a Massively Multiplayer Online Game."

You can find it in an academic daftabase

This may or may not help:
      http://www.psychologyofgames.com/

It's a great site with lots of that kind of thing.

      http://psp.sagepub.com/content/35/6/752.abstract

In addition to anything written by Craig Anderson and co (Huseman and Bushman), you have the much more recent special issue of the journal here: http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2010/06/violent-video-games.aspx

Never really looked at 'addiction' per se, but Sherry Turkle's work would be interesting, especially The Second Self.

I'm doing a bunch of reading myself on media effects, might be interesting to look at media effects, arousal, needs, use and gratification, as well as reversal theory. Wider than videogames, but I'm really intrigued by possibly applying it there.

      Sorry Dood,

Games being my second form of escapism(Comics NUMBER ONE!) I tend to avoid these sort of articles. The few times I did read them steam shot out of my ears!

Of course if your looking for thoughtful exposition and certified research

      http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/12/new-study-violent-games-not-to-blame-for-youth-aggression/

w00t! my new fridge just arrived! the old one was toast.. had to keep stuff in the freezer just to keep it normal fridge kind of cold :|
Of course I didn't really need the expense given my current situation, but thankfully we got it no deposit and 4 years interest free! Saved our bacon.. literally!

When I first read that, I was wondering why you were using a toaster for a fridge.

San Francisco in less than 3 weeks! Anyone want anything brought back? :)

      My heart.

      I left it there...

        LOL

My wallet is in El Segundo if you go there.....

I am SO getting you a heart if I can find one! If I can't get a rubber/plastic one, then I'll just have to kill a hobo (It's on my bucket list anyway so it's like killing two birds with one stone. Or two hobos...)

      The bridge.

It'll look nice next to my eifel tower

The actual bridge? I'm not sure on my luggage weight allowance but that might tip it over the limit.

hmphf... I bet that dude from Despicable Me would have no trouble pulling it off....
          *sulks

But he had a SCIENTIST! I don't have a scientist! If i did, I would. Sorry.

If you're serious, here's my serious answer.

Go into a comic store in SF, ask what absolute editions they have and the prices. Tell me and I'll tell you...what I would like.

I should warn you , Absolute Editions are as heavy as all heavy.

Off to NY in bout four weeks, sure we can work something out....... :D

Yeah, I read comics. I've seen the mighty tomes lurking. I will be wandering around any/every comic store I find so that's not a problem. Anything in particular you were looking for?

Hard to say at the moment.

I am after Absolute Planetary Vol 2, but a freind may be doing a large order and I will save on shipping anyway...

Other wise, I have an Absolute V for Vendetta sized hole in my collection. And other things I can't recall right away...

Sooo, I started playing FF8 again over the weekend. Pretty much as good as I remembered it being. There was one thing I had forgotten though - just how much of an arse Squall is. I'm only up to the dance bit with Rinoa, so granted I'm not far in, but geez... he's a serious arse.

    ...Jimu. Thoughts.

Wait a minute, I'm not Ji-

      Never mind.

Give him time. Once the whole game becomes mind numbingly crazy he begins to improve as a character, and all your hatred will be directed towards Rinoa.

      Useless, Useless Rinoa.

Haha, yeah I have played it before so the thing keeping me from saying 'I do not wish to play as this prick any more' and putting down the controller is the thought of what awesomeness is to come.

But that being said, he's so much more of a dick than I remembered him being. I thought when I was a teenager he was all cool and brooding. Nope, just a dick.

          Nope, just a teenager.

Yeah this is true... maybe I'm being too hard on him :(

You can never be too harsh. Since I am still a teenager myself I have the absolute authority to say this. He's a twat, yes, but I can relate to a lot of what he does. In real life I rarely ever speak, I would wear black more, but I can never seem to find my clothes, and my black jeans faded. I have ridiculous hair, and because of said hair I look kind of effeminate.

Nevertheless, he's a dick at the start. When I first played it, I thought he was cool, but I was like, 10 at the time, so I don't think that really counts. He's a dick. The only solace is Quistis paying him out for being such a moody twat.

*remembers this for when the little stranges are teenagers*

              Yes, parenting advice from me.

Give them Ketamine to shut them up (but stay off PCP, that stuff is nasty).

As teenagers they are annoying, self obsessed brats, just like they were when they were younger, they just think they aren't.

If you really want to mock them, talk about them from 2 years before, the rapid rate they change while a teenager means they are constantly looking down at their earlier years, but are wildly embarrassed by them.

Finally, call your son a loser, and insinuate that he is gay, simply because he hasn't had a girlfriend, and doesn't display his feelings towards women in front of you... Mum...

              *cough*

My dad suggested there must be something wrong with me as I was nearly 25 at the time and didn't have a girlfriend. He was going on about how I was the only one who could carry on the family name...

I asked how he'd react if I told him I was gay (I'm not), I found out... he took a swing at me.

                Good times.

                  Wow.

My parents are far too passive to do anything. My mother just enjoys tormenting me (not really, she just has a bit of a bitchy streak). I managed to get her to stop by pretending I was genuinely offended by her insinuations, and then she tried to get my sister to stop making the jokes too.

                  Ahh, good times.

WAAAAAAY back when I first played that game I was the exact same arse as Squall.

I had messy uncut hair I wore all black, couldn't not have a deep thought before I spoke, couldn't not have deep thoughts while others spoke. Just finished school and hated the world, questioning my reality and my place in it. Didn't want to be a follower and wanted to make my own decisions.

My GFs name at the time was ...Renea.

      The major differences being:
I wore sneakers not boots, didnt own a sword let alone a Gunblade. Had a goatee. Didnt have feathers on my bomber jacket...in fact my bomber jacket was a black hoodie.

So even though it is obvious to me that Squall (And mys 17 year old self) is a complete self-centred arse, I will always understand why someone at that age acts that way.

It's a great coming of age story, Squall grows as a character and even though he starts off doing what he does he really grows up and becomes the hero we all want him to be.
Mostly he is fueled by his love of Rinoa, another thing I can relate to(Not Rinoa, my wife!). I'm the kind of guy that has no real goals until there is a good reason. Why should I study hard and get a high payed job when I only support myself?

I also like the fact that during the ending Squall is still unsure of himself and goes on a bad acid trip before finding Rinoa again. Someone like Zell just plows through life smiling and having a good time. He just pops out the other side because he aint much of a thinker and he knew he would. He isn't a deep enough thinker to realise that failure is a possibility.

It explained depression quite well I think, dumb guys don't get depressed...depression is thinking too much. Zell's never do that!

I think Laguna is more of a dick because he gets talked into staying in Esther(?) and becoming president and never returning to his fiance, who dies with a broken heart, and meeting his only son!
Also he is a coward for never returning to his first love(Voiced by Faye Wong) and letting her marry a complete military DICK!

      Any questions?

No, very well put! It's all very true, I just don't remember a lot of the game or the specifics of Squall's character development to be honest so it was a bit suprising when I first started the game up. Looking forward to the rest of the game though! It's almost like playing it for the first time again it's been so long...

Thanks for baiting me into that. I wish I could do the same with DKC2 but alas its about a monkey saving a gorilla from a crocdile...maybe there is deeper meaning there that I'm missing...

I'll tell you something else, before FF8 came out I found out that there was a cowboy in it(Irvine Kineas) and I was so excited. He is prolly my least fav after playing...yes, yes he is.

The only prob I had with 8 was there being no monster playable characters, 7 had Cait and Red and Vincent (..kinda).

9 had Quina and Vivi..and Zidane (kinda).

          10 had Kimahri...and Wakka (kinda).

12 did it again! All humans, except for G-stringboobsears lady. Who went straight on my team.(Yes I even got the camera to go up in between her legs on a staircase to impress some non-gamer freinds).

8 is still my fave, love junctioning, story came at the right time in my life. FFX-2's story was good timing for me too. These days I'm busy with Dragon Age and Pokemunz but I have fond memories of the days that Final Fantasy was the best.

Damn, that was very well put. I liked Squall because he was always a reasonable character, excluding all the fantasy stuff, and random happenstance, he changes how I imagine someone going through that might.

I keep meaning to add but was to busy ranting to remember that:
"My GFs name at the time was …Renea."

I was referring to my GIRLFREIND and not my GUARDIAN FORCE.

          Just for clarification.

            Bahahahaha.

I used to make jokes about myself in the future and the only GF I'd ever get would be Shiva...

Younger me had strangely premonitory powers...

    Oh, man, phew.

Was so worried I'd turn up and find that we were on page 7 already or something.

    Thank god.

Oh wait, I'm supposed to say something constructive, right?

    Hmmmmm.

    So... Who wears short shorts?

      Women of negotiable affection.

Terry Pratchett reader or just a coincidence?

Yep.. I'm not that creative :P

Oh man, that's a fail from me, I didn't pick up on the reference until it was pointed out. *Sigh* I guess I'll just have to go and read every discworld. Again.

Uh Mark, I just received Medal of Honor (PS3) in the mail and it came from Kotaku. I'm not sure why.....

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty freaking happy that I have it, but I don't why I've got it. If this was a mix up of some kind, let me know and I'll gladly post it to whoever it was meant to be for. If it wasn't, then thank you very, very much :)

lolol! That's a pretty nice outcome! But... maybe not for the meant-to-be winner. No one by any chance received my Dead Rising 2 jacket did they? I never got it :'(

      Mark...?

I think you just won Kotaku-DOS for not being a dick!

Yeah I think it was a kudos prize from that week where you gave lots of people (including me) Freedom force on steam! Several people nominated you that week.

Yeah I definitely remeber you winning Kudos for the Freedom Force giveaway

Yeah, but I already got stuff for that, so.... don't quite know why I have this....

I think I just doubled up on prizes. Happy hanukah. Its yours!

God I love anything to do with doctor who.

You not what one of the best parts of the day is..

Lunch Break, the sheer amount of love i have to this part of the day is astounding, nothing like counting down the minutes till you get to duck out and grab yourself a nice feed, generally mine consists of going to coles and getting 1/2 a chicken for some chicken sandwiches, but whatever i have it always lifts my mood.

just put it out there... Lunch breaks always a good time

Amen to that. My lunch break was especially awesome today as I got The Force Unleashed: Sith Edition for $10.95 pre-owned from my local GAME.

And I had a $16 credit note, so I paid NOTHING.

Best. Lunch. Ever. (But I forgot to get food...)

haha oh the local GAME store does get some attention generally haha still how do u forget food, me and food are good mates keeps the energy levels up

        Dude.. .Nice..

I thought i did good when i got it for $28 lol

So had a awesome weekend beat assasins creed 2 without all the freaking collectables. Played pokemon and decided i'm going to build a mini mame cabinet. I have a old spare laptop getting a 18.5 monitor and bought the keyboard encoder, joysticks and buttons for about $100. The project doesn't seem to hard as i work with electronics at work should be just plug and play. But i struggling to think of a solution for speakers. Any ideas ?

I have no speaker suggestions soz, but I too have been meaning to do this for a while. I bought an encoder and a bunch of wires/buttons for a uni project a while back but just haven't had the time to look into it since. That. and I'm still in disputes with the ladyfriend over where the cabinet would go once built :3

Just got my DC Encyclopedia in the mail Mark, very cool :)

My comic-connoisseur colleague at work tells me its wasted on me and is upset I didn't spend any money on it. I feel appropriately smug.

Scan and colour copy the cover, wrap it around a similar sized tome... use that as a coaster at work.

See how long before he cracks.

Being a rabid comic collector myself I must say...
I never go in for those sorts of things. Why buy a book about a comic when you can buy a comic. I reached the same point with collectables, I used to buy all sorts, toys, posters, movie tie-ins etc. And then I realised ...why buy the thing about the thing when I can get more of the thing?

That being said, If you don't collect/read many comics maybe this is perfect for you, I myself will continue to rely on Wikipedia next time I read a Grant Morrison crossover meg epic.

Also, I still buy the clothes...shirst hoodies...These things I use aaaand sometimes they spark up a convo with Tom, Dick or Henrietta in the street!

You were talking about DC comics...right???
