Selling more than 4.7 million copies sold since its December 7 release and 3.3 million on day-one, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is now the fastest-selling PC game of all time. Want to guess what game it beat?
I know, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm isn’t even technically a full PC game, but that doesn’t take away from the accomplishment. If anything the fact that an expansion pack for a six-year-old game has sold more than 4.7 million copies in a month is even more impressive than if this were a standalone title. When you also take into account that the previous record holder was World of Warcraft’s Wrath of the Lich King expansion you really begin to get a feel for what an unstoppable juggernaut this franchise is.
“We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore and extensively revamped the game world for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’ve been floored by the community’s response so far, and we’d like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for helping Cataclysm reach this incredible milestone.”
