This Is How Kinect Turns Your Face Into A Talking Avatar

At CES 2011, Microsoft unveiled Avatar Kinect, a new Xbox 360 app that uses the Kinect camera to track your facial expressions for a personalised, glorified chatroom. Just what does Avatar Kinect see? More than you might think.

This brief tech demo illustrates how Kinect follows the head and multiple points on a person's face to interpret their expressions and movement. What is now being translated into rather simple emotes and animation on Xbox Live Avatars will hopefully be used for greater purposes in the future.

That face is going to haunt my nightmares now :o

Kinda reminds me of the lawnmower man... creepy

      Awesome movie haha

Get ready for the indie made Adult version. Now with 80% more 'body' recognition!

What I really want is for them to show us how they're going to turn Kinect into a useful gaming device. The the slate is looking pretty bare now that Dance Central has gone, and they haven't shown us what the next step for it is going to be.

The longer this silence goes on, the more I have to think that its legacy is going to be a whole bunch of cool hacks done on the PC (and even PS3 if Sony sort out their security) and a pretty threadbare range of dodgy 360 titles.

The Wii has that covered. Sorry. :P

No, Kinect does shit games in high definition - that's a whole new market!

Every new hardware launch has a drought of good games for a few months after release. The install base of 8 million guarantees that games will come out to take advantage of that, so it's just a matter of time.

Even only 3 months after release a fair few good games are in development for it (Steel Battalion, Child of Eden, Forza 4, Star Wars could turn out good.)

So its a cut down version of what LA Nora is using for facial expressions...
