New Batman Arkham City Comic Has Downloadable Content, Oddly Enough

Fans of Detective Comics, Batman, Batman & Robin, Gotham City Sirens, Streets of Gotham, Batman Inc, Batman: Dark Knight and Superman/Batman can soon celebrate the launch of another Batman comic: Batman: Arkham City. This one's based on the video game.

This one also has downloadable content. How weird is that?

Batman: Arkham City (the comic) will start in May and run six issues, telling the story between the hit Batman: Arkham Asylum game and the forthcoming fall-scheduled Arkham City game. Like the games, the comic is written by Paul Dini. That's good. The oddity is that DC Comics will release 8-page, downloadable interludes between each issue. The comic will cost $US3 for 20 pages of story; the interludes $US1 for 8. The whole thing will be collected. Each issues of the comic will be sold in comics shops and digital shops simultaneously.

All we've got for a plot synopsis is the following bit mentioned in the press release for the comic. It reads like a summary of the new game, so maybe it's not the exact plot of the comic. "Batman: Arkham City picks up one year after the original game, where former Arkham Warden turned newly elected Mayor of Gotham City Quincy Sharp has decided to close down the infamous institution. In its stead, he establishes "Arkham City," the new maximum security "home" for all of Gotham City's thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds. Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, inmates can roam free and do whatever they want as long as they don't try to escape. To run this urban prison, Sharp has appointed Dr. Hugo Strange, a man who knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman."

Carlos D'anda will draw the series. The interludes will be drawn, according to DC Comics, by "a variety of artists."

Look for the first two issues of the comic in May either in a local comics shop or downloadable, presumably (though not specificed today) on DC Comics' Comixology app and other digital storefronts currently supported by the publisher.
