Tell Us Dammit

Dammit we want you to tell us stuff – like has a game ever caused you to cry? Come on you can admit it! If not then what game has come closest?

This isn’t some marketing survey or whatever. It’s an emotional investment in you. Yes, we’re interested in knowing you, Kotaku reader person. You probably know enough about us – more than you even want to, we’re sure. But, hey, we’d like to know about you, too.

I never cry. Ever. Except at the end of Toy Story 3 – how can any person stay dry during that sob fest? Alright fine, I’ll stop playing tough. Here’s my list.

– Secret of Mana
– Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
– Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

I’d like to stress, however, that they were single tears – not full blown sobs.

FF7 was definately the first ever where I felt so hurt cuz of just one cutscene.

I don’t think any other game’s done it yet, but some are starting to hit the heart, not hard enough to cause tears though.

  Yeah definately FF7, they tried in the later ones b ut it just wasn’t as emotionaly impactful. That Dead Island trailer came pretty close though.

A game has never made me cry… ever.

Not because I am a man of steel… because I’m not, man I cried in Adam Sandler’s Click. WTF

But its because either A) i have played a game that has been able to move me this way or
B) I cant emotional connect to a videogame character as well as I can with a movie character.

The most “moved” Ive felt was the end of RDR. When IT happens.

  Same here. I havent cried in a game yet but limbo touched something inside me kind of like james sunderland did in silent hill 2. I also cried in click. So theres 3 people now.

Ok, here goes… Portal… I sobbed immeditaly after smiling and being filled with a creepy contentment after experiencing a truly unique and unexpected gaming session ( I played it from beginning to end in that one session) knowing at the time that there was no more portal sequels being planned… I proceeded to smile again some years later after reading the news of Portal 2 being developed 🙂

  From the moment they entered the barn at the end of that game, I saw where it was all going and I started bawling like a baby.
  
  I was shocked at how much it affected me!
  
  But then again, I’ve also welled up recently (though not actually cried) at Alan Wake and Heavy Rain, so it probably shouldn’t have been too unexpected. I’m obviously a sook.

      RDR just made me angry because I felt I could have won (or at least taken a lot more with me) if it hadn’t made leave the barn. Though I knew there was simply no other way they could make that game end and still call it a western.

I struggle to think of a game that has made my eyes water, but when I think of games that I have been emotionally invested in, one immediately springs to mind – Limbo.
Actually, come to think of it, Half Life 2: Episode 2’s ending did make me feel borderline weepy…

The closest I’ve come to crying in a game was at the end of Gothic 2.. and the only reason I came close was cos I was so sad to see it end! I wanted it to go on forever!!!
The only movie I ever recall crying in, was when I was about 5 or 6.. My mum took me to see the Black Cauldron, and this little cute furry creature died, and I cried.. but then at the end of the movie, he came back to life! Awwww! Gotta love a happy ending 😉

FF7 is the only one I can think of (The game that taught nerds how to cry) but that’s almost a given.

I honestly can’t think of anything else. Sure, plenty of other games have had me emotionally invested since then, but none that have squeezed out a tear. I’m going to blame FF7 on youth and shock.

I cried twice while playing Fable 2. First time when Rose gets killed and the second time during the dream thing near the end of the game.

  Have you seen the Pixar movie Up? The opening 10 minutes of that is among the most brutal tear jerking cinema I have ever experienced. If you survive that, you should probably go see a doctor because you may actually be dead.

    I admit I’ve never cried in a game, yeah I’ve been emotional taken by certain things, but I have never cried. Movies on the other hand, I cry like a baby 😛 And I’m with Batguy, when I first saw UP’s beginning I was crying…I think I still do 🙂 Some of these “kids” films I think portray some very mature issues. I wont list the amount of movies I’ve cried in…it’s far too long!

No game has made me cry, but the one that brought me closest, interestingly, was Fable 2.

For some reason, the start of that game, where you *spoilers?* watch as your sister dies, and you can see the sorrow on bad guy Mcgees face as he does it, it felt emotionally deep, in a way the rest of the game just failed at.

Apart from that? The ending of Half Life 2 Ep 2. This is beautifully done, providing the perfect sense of helplessness and feeling, so much so that I’d put it in the same level as Pixar films for emotional manipulation. Otherwise, nah, I’m a MAN, and I AMERICA my way through MAN games and never get sad. For AMERICA!

Only ever reared up at the end I’d s4 of Dexter. Just can’t connect with games in that way. More than a few games have caused tears of frustration though.

The closest i have come was gears 2…

I really wasn’t expecting all that emotion from such a fist-bumpin sort of game.

Both when Tai killed himself and when dom found whats her name… corpse face…

there’s probably been a couple of others..

OH!!!

Too Human. I cried like a baby when i finally finished it to find there was no actual ending..

I cried when I played it to the end of ‘Pariah’…

Such potential for a game ruined… I cried because it was such a terrible ending.

A game hasn’t made me cry but there have been points where I’ve felt sad.

The first time I played Infamous and had to make the moral choice to either let people have food or zap them to take it for myself, I chose evil but the way they scurried away scared made me feel so bad that I reloaded my save game and did the “good” path for the entire game. I did “evil” for my second playthrough though :p

In GTA4 when I chose the “deal” ending I was upset with the outcome because I was fond of fatty cousin Roman so I chose the “revenge” ending as the true ending.

Games just don’t make me cry! Except for the ending to Tetris, I bawled like a baby.

I nearly cried finding out why there were no children in Resident Evil 4.
I’m pretty sure there was another occasion when I cried while gaming, but I don’t remember exactly. I cry pretty easily so I’m sure it’s happened other times. Oh that’s right, I shed a few tears at the end of the second Layton game, right after you solve the final puzzle. =’D
Hmm, does crying after watching a StarCraft tournament finals count?

Never genuinely cried playing a game. But have cried on the inside playing a game i wanted so much to like but couldn’t because of major flaws/faults. Alone in the Dark on 360 being one of them. What a waste!

I tend to be a bit of a softie for this sort of thing, so I tend to be like that a lot.

Valkyria Chronicles was most recently, now that I’ve finally gotten round to it. It wasn’t the actual death scene that got me, though. It was the funeral.

Similarly recently, Crisis Core’s ending practically killed me, and I think the first time was FFVII, not at Aerith’s death, but at Cait Sith retrieving the black materia in the first time.

Though yeah, in general, bittersweet moments tend to be the ones that make me cry. But like I said, I’m a softie.

The closest a game has ever come to making me cry was the end of Half Life 2 Episode 2. That entry had me hooked all the way through. Didn’t actually choke me up, but it’s one hell of a cliffhanger.

One of the only films to actually get me choked up is Braveheart.

Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm (story mode)….yup. Damn you Kazuma..Seeing as I’ve not seen these episode, just read the chapter and yes I cried then too. When I see the episodes I guess I wil start up again, Naruto alwasy makes me snivle, its just that sad!
Valkyria Chronicles, the character in question death was a shock. Topped off with a funeral and bad singing.
Crisis Core, I think it was the screaming.
Final Fantasy X, poor Yunie fell down.
Mass Effect 2, not so much the crying but angry at Kaiden. He called me a traitor that sodding argh I hate him so much…

Not at games, but definitely at plenty of books/movies.

There’s something about emotion in games that isn’t as powerful as reading it or seeing live-action works, maybe because graphics in games still look so artificial.

Never been brought to tears by a game (though I’m hoping that will one day change), but here’s my list of games which got me choked up:
Final Fantasy 7 (end of disk 1), Crisis Core (ending), Final Fantasy X (ending), Metal Gear Solid 3 (The Boss’s final mission), Shadow of the Colossus (the bridge, ending), Silent Hill 2 (stairs of fire), Valkyria Chronicles (the burial).

Oh, what, no one has yet mentioned Homeworld?!

It was to be the dawn of a grand new age for you race. Tribal differences shed for the sole purpose of creating the most advanced technology eer conceived: the Hyperdrive.

But that day of joy was eclipsed by the blackest day in all of our history.

When we shot through the dark, fast as light itself, we went to meet our comrades who had spent the last 10 years reaching the edge of our solar system. But what we found… We found a twisted, burning hulk where we should have found our brothers. And we found aliens, who refused to speak, and sought only our deaths.

Fleeing back to Kharak, our home… It was the saddest thing I’ve ever played in a game.

Kharak was a golden orb in space, a desert world of sand and dust, shining radiant in our Sun’s light. When we left, it was. What we found…

What we found was a black sphere of glass. Still glowing; the fires of our people’s genocide still burning, visible from high orbit.

The Scaffolding we had used to build the Mothership was rent asunder by a much larger force of invaders. Amongst it was a security black box, a recording… That showed Kharak’s murder, plain and clear. It was torture to watch.

Ping.

A blip on our sensors.

Ping.

Sending a probe, we find… we find the last of our kind.

Ping.

Six massive cryogenic stasis decks, the full crew intended for our ship. Drifting. Thirty thousand people. The last of our race.

Ping…

… and….

Pong.

Enemy. Huge ships. Larger than any except our Mothership.

Pong.

Moving closer… No! To the stasis decks!! Quick, send… Everything! Save our people! Their ships will slaughter us! But if we lose even one tray…

That was the most emotive game I’ve ever played. I can’t do it real justice; the music, the visuals, the desperation… I didn’t cry, but I’m haunted to this day…

…by the five thousand I couldn’t save.

  I totally forgot about this. The Art and the Music in that game were incredibly emotive. Never has a game made me feel like the fate of an entire people rests in your my own success. The haunting music and strange looking ships you quickly start to identify as your own as you carry them from jump point to jump point. Each level offered a completely different scenario and felt new and fresh. Captured ships made your fleet feel really unique. I may have shed a small tear in the final cut scene.
  
  Number 2 was also fantastic also and rumours are still abound number 3 may be in the works with the IP now secured.

Suikoden for the PS1 came the closest. There is a final, tragic twist as your strategist, stabbed in the back by a colleague who was a mole for the entire duration of the game, implicately dies moments before the war he had been a major factor in winning was won.

It was the first game, RPG or otherwise, that I had gotten into so deeply. FFVII came a little later, and by that stage my heart was already made of stone. I’d cried my tears. I left them on the battlefield.

    Although Suikdoen II had a lot of brilliant moments [Luca’s downfall was possibly one of the better big boss battles in any RPG… imagine the last boss dying half way!], as well as the final sequence with Jowy, but I never felt anyone got as fundamentally ripped off as Mathiu did.
    
    That said, I do acknowledge I generally felt more attached to the Suikoden 2 characters, they were typically more fleshed out.

I’d have to say FFVII as well. They killed Aerith, YOU BASTARDS! From that point on I was wondering, “Ok, who’s next most likely in my party to up and die on me so I don’t have to waste time levelling them up?”

And would have to say MGS4, made me come damn close. I think I cried after Sniper Wolf died in MGS. Congrats Hideo, you really made us connect emotionally with your characters. Raiden, you are (and always will be) the exception. I don’t care how cool they try to make you look from now on… *rants some more about MGS2*

Oh, I should also mention that I felt… something when, on my second playthrough of Knights of the Old Republic 2, I brutally murdered almost my entire party.

Descending to the dark side was an impressively unsettling experience.

I got a bit teary at the end of MGS3. Other than that, no games have made me start fully crying.

Haven’t reached the end of RDR yet, and I don’t want to.

I’ve never actually cried because of a game, but I think Lost Oddysey was as close as I could get. That game was just so well written, and the story so strong that I just couldn’t help but feel for the characters.

I cried during Click. And Toy Story 3. And whenever I think about FF7. I miss that game. Yes, I have played 6 through 13, Final Fantasy VII still comes out top, for me.

Like a lot of you I’ve never actually teared up (‘cept in frustration maybe) but the ending to Red Dead felt like a kick in the guts and left me with a lingering *Keanu Reeves voice* “Woh?” feeling.

  I got chocked up at the end of Halo: Reach. Though I knew what the ending would be the whole way through the game, I had no idea of how they would approach it. I was just blown away by how perfect the ending felt, at no time throughout the previous 4 games had I felt that much like a Spartan. My girlfriend only saw that last level and while it was loading in, I’d explained to her the events from the rest of the game, even she got a little ’emotionally connected’

In all seriousness, though, I can’t think of any games where I’ve been that emotional or upset that it brings tears to my eyes. I do feel something, but eh. In certain TV series I do have an emotional investment, because you really get to know the characters.

Also – Never seen anyone cry from watching a movie. EVER. You’re all liars. /glare

I didn’t actually cry but I came closest at the end of MGS3. That emotional final boss fight. Pulling the trigger. That massive sequence with EVA explain how you were screwed over from the start, all the while we see Big Boss forced to partake in a celebration with the president. Then finally Big Boss reaches The Boss’s grave. Right on cue as he salutes EVA says: “She was a true…Patriot”. This alone would have gotten to me but the final shot with tears welling up in Big Boss’s eyes really capped it off. (You can even go first person in that sequence and see his vision get all blurry from the tears). MGS3 was bar none, the best game in the series and one of the best games I’ve ever played. 4 couldn’t hold a candle to it.

Twice. Two games have made me cry.

1. Terranigma – When Ark returns home after literally lifetimes of wandering, to find the true nature of his home and friends… And that ending… Yeah, I shed some tears.

2. Final Fantasy VIII. I’ve got to admit, VII didn’t bring me to tears. Even “that scene.” I was more “WTF?” than “Boo hoo.” But the ending in FFVIII where (spoilers ahead) Laguna visits Raine’s grave and the truth suddenly hits… yeah, I got some tears then.

Now granted I haven’t played a lot of the games people are mentioning but here’s mine.

I wasn’t crying but definitely got close when I was listening to Vigil towards the end of Mass Effect. That damn music gets me every time…

On the movie front (and I know I’m going to cop crap for this) its the only time I’ve had to stop watching a movie, but it was Pearl Harbour. During the actual attack, I couldn’t watch it anymore. I guess just knowing that it had actually happened, and that real people were involved and had died, I had to turn it off. To this day I haven’t watched that last half of it.

Generally speaking, when I finish a really good game there’s always a part of me that kinda dies, the part that was completely enthralled and part of the game. FF7, Crisis Core, FF10 are the first 3 games that come to mind.
Most of the time, it’s RPG games that do it (most likely because the characters tend to be more developed). Mass Effect 1 and 2 (more so 1) made me feel like I was hottest shit in space, same with the Halo games (even halo 2 which I know is considered to be a horrible ending, got me all hyped up for halo 3 :D).
Off the top of my hat I cant think of any other games, but there most definitely is quite a few.
Ohh actually…..
Call of Duty black ops also brought a tear to my eye, man what a unique and compelling story…

Aerith’s death in FF VII not only made me cry, it also made me hate Sephiroth. The ending to Crisis Core was devastating as well. Square really hit the nail on the head with that playable ending.

Movies, Snow Dogs did it for me, when he goes back to save his father.

I’ve come close at the end of Halflife 2 Ep 2, and during Zelda Majora’s Mask (the Deku Butler mourning his son! Kafei and Anju getting married at the end of the world!). Never actually cried though, not for a game or a movie. Up was so close, SO close, but not quite.
