The Scott Pilgrim Video Game Could Have Been A Big Adventure

When comic book series Scott Pilgrim came to video game form last year – Ubisoft’s Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game – it played like an old-school beat ’em up, with pixelated style. But it could have been a very different adventure.

According to the comic’s creator, Bryan Lee O’Malley, episodic adventure game makers Telltale Games proposed that they tackle Scott Pilgrim’s video game-inspired tale. O’Malley dashed their hopes.

“Telltale wanted to do Scott Pilgrim but I said no,” O’Malley writes on Twitter. “I couldn’t see it as an adventure game. All respect to them, though.”

Ubisoft Montreal got that job, delivering something simpler, featuring music from chiptunesy band Anamanaguchi and graphics from pixel master Paul Robertson. Telltale Games has since gone on to bigger and broader things, making games based on Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, The Walking Dead and King’s Quest.

For all of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game’s faults (no online multiplayer, repetitive play), at least the whole thing came out, right?
