What The Hell Is Uncharted's Movie Director Talking About?

Hollywood is making an Uncharted movie. It could star Mark Wahlberg, Robert DeNiro and even Joe Pesci as a family of treasure hunters. This makes us wonder, has the movie's unlikely director, David O. Russell, even played Uncharted?

"I want the gamers to be happy," Russell tells IGN, adding that he's not supposed to talk about the possibility of supernatural elements in the movie. "I have total respect for the game," he continues, adding that his kids loves playing it. "I love playing it. I just want to create a world that takes it to another level, that's another amazing world that's more cinematic."

Russell describes his take on Uncharted as having a "family dynamic", once again saying it will follow "a crime family that metes out justice in the world of art and antiquities".

"They're like the Sopranos in some ways, but they have great taste, and they have a sense of justice."

When IGN asked out of all the video games, why Uncharted was the game he wanted to make into a movie, he replied, "Because it's centred around a family, and I like the combination of criminals and truth. These guys they're tough but they're working on this crazy case, and they can't do it without truth. I think that's cool."

Uncharted, the game, is about Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who looks for lost loot with his friend "Sully" or with a female companion. It is not about a family of criminals who are like the Sopranos and who "mete out justice". Whatever game Russell is talking about sounds interesting, but it sure as hell ain't Uncharted.

Russell is still writing the script. He says he's almost done and that it's going to be "fantastic".

It's another Uwe Boll situation. Years ago I interviewed Uwe before he made Farcry for a podcast I had, I asked him about it, the direction he was taking, he said 'we're shooting it in canada' from memory. I said 'but there's no jungle in Canada?' and he replied 'that doesnt matter'. I asked about the script, when he described it I told him it didn't resemble farcry, Uwe was a nice bloke, quite courteous but said words along the lines of 'it didn't matter it was just a name'. It sounds like that's what's happening here. They have an idea and they want a bankable franchise name to slap on it. Way to go Uwe mk2.

I've seen one David O'Russell film and one Uwe Boll film, and I'll tell you that 'The Fighter' is not in the same league as 'Alone in the Dark' because one of them is an actual film.

Just leave him alone - it doesn't matter who ends up making this movie because it'll probably be bad anyhow.

It's funny that Mark Wahlberg is a pretty serious actor who's been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, yet people are still parading for the dude who's too old for the job.

How is Mark Whalberg too old when every Bond actor has been at least in their 40s?

Too old for the character Nathan Drake... maybe? But too old for an action movie that may or may not resemble Uncharted, No.
Mark Whalberg may nearly be 40, but Nathan Drake is certainly in his mid to late 30s I believe.

Just change the title and character names to something else and it's no longer an Uncharted movie. Everyone's happy! (an by everyone I mean me).

You can count me in on this camp too. With a different name this may end up an alright movie but we really do want an Uncharted movie to be about Nathan Drake - not the good guy Sopranos.

        yeah. . .

        I'll join this club also

          I support this motion.

This is hilarious. Okay, back-up the truck. I say bring Nathan Fillion on board. He'll play Drake, direct, be the DP, pen the script and also do the sound design.

Better yet, he'll bring Joss Whedon along who'll do justice to the female heros of the games.

This. Oh, if only this were to happen...

We should tell Joss. If he gets support from fans, he might actually try to do it. We know Nathan Fillion was interested in the role, and he's good friends with Joss so there's a chance it could work. We mustn't give up hope!!

Why the hell didn't IGN ask him WHY he thought the game was "centred around a family"? That's extremely bad journalism right there.

Since when the hell was Uncharted about a "crime family"? Sir Drake was an explorer. Nathan Drake is a treasure hunter. Sully is not a member of the Drake family, or at least not that the game shows.

Really dunno where the hell he's getting this crap from, but it's not from the games' canon

"another amazing world that’s more cinematic" I challenge any director to make a movie more cinematic than a video game, making good movies has become a lost art these days. luckily the same hasn't happened to video games yet

Not lost to everyone, but some companies are losing it fast. When terms like "another Call of Duty" are used to describe new games in the same genre, it makes me worry that the end of creativity is getting closer.

The worst thing about seeing someone wrong on the internet is that it's impossible to make them un-wrong and you just have to sit back and be sad about how wrong they are.

I hate reading articles about this debacle because I know others know he's wrong but no one can do anything and just have to impotently sit back and await the inevitable badness it will be.

I don't understand why they are calling it "Uncharted". Does it really have marketing appeal?

Those who have played will avoid it because they'll know it's not faithful to the game. And those who haven't played it won't go because everyone knows that movies-based on games suck.

It seems like calling it "Uncharted" can only hurt it's success if it's not going to be faithful.

David O. Russel says, “I want the gamers to be happy,”

well do the gamers sound happy?

Play the game David, no I mean, play it yourself, don't have your assistant or your kids play it and then tell you about it. Play it for yourself - you will enjoy it and soon you will forget about this "crime family" bullshit and then maybe you can make a decent movie that will keep the gamers "happy".

"i love playing it" .... what a liar. No respect for the source material.

I'm suprised the financial backers of the film haven't noticed the literal millions of negative comments thrown at the director for his garbled mindless ramblings.

At some point they should click to the fact he's completely disconnected the core market for the film and they've got a box office mega bomb in the making.

But then again it'll probably get made, bomb and Russel will blame the source material for being 'too shallow to tell a story'. And game to film adaptations will continue with an unwarranted bad reputation because moron film makers.

Cocaine's an expensive drug I suppose.

The fact Mr. Russel says "The Gamers" shows he hasn't played Uncharted.

Otherwise he would refer to how he would make the movie - not how the target demograph needs to be kept "happy"

In agreement with the 'why call it Uncharted if it's not even going to be Uncharted at all' camp. It'd be like making a Super Mario Bros. movie set in a dystopian city and Bowser is a human. Who is this divergence supposed to please? Fans of the franchise will be unhappy that the movie isn't even remotely related to the game, and people who aren't fans will roll their eyes at another ridiculous game-to-movie adaptation.

a year ago everyone was talking about how video game based movies suck and i was like uncharted would be different cause it can't be possible to make nathan drake suck. you prove me wrong david.
I think the best uncharted movie would be an animated one.

even though my spirit was broken a few hours ago my thirst for uncharted still wants me to go
even though i know it would suck even more
than prince of persia david you son of a whore
you tore the expectations we had in store
it's not about the game it's about the door
you could have opened to a world that ensures
a place where movies based on games weren't a bore
but no you had to go the other way around
you took the suspense up then you threw it down
and now the whole astounded world wonders how
you made a game already made like a movie drown

this is how it was meant to be:

even though my spirit was broken a few hours ago

david o'russel has been dropped by sony just so everyone knows.
    http://au.movies.ign.com/articles/111/1110216p1.html

But that article is dated August 3rd, 2010!!!

David has been dropped? Well that's one improvement made. Next they need to drop mark and get Nathen fillion back. Even if the movie sucks gamers like me will be looking foward to uncharted 3

Patrick Wilson for Nate (Watch the A-Team and Watchmen)

If the movie is titled Uncharted, people are going to expect certain elements, and if they aren't there, the film is doomed to failure. If they make the movie as described by the director, they better call it something OTHER than Uncharted. The movie he's describing is NOT Uncharted. It doesn't even remotely resemble the game.

Here's a hint guys: No families. and the main character's aren't thieves. A different story line I can see. But it better have fortune hunter Nathan Drake, Sully, and some of the other recognizable characters from the game. It needs to have the same feel as the games. The recognizable characters, humor and a similar style to the games. Otherwise, what's the point?

how bout, the guy who directed lord of the rings to do the filming let naughty dog write the script and get good A list actors, nicholas cage....etc etc
