Lego Star Wars III Proves That New Star Wars Can Be Amazing

Did you love those original Star Wars movies? Were you horrified by the newer ones… or think they were at least a wee bit inferior?

Attention: we’re actually living in an era of great Star Wars. That might amaze you as much as the news that the newly-released Lego Star Wars III may be the best Lego Star Wars game yet. It’s first few hours will stun fans of the series who may think they’ve seen it all.

The great Star Wars of our era – if I may Force push my opinion on you – is the Clone Wars cartoon series. The computer-animated show is now in its third season, all three of which chronicle a great war that occurred between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The series stars a huge cast of classic Star Wars heroes and villains, including Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Count Dooku and a slew of new characters. In the galaxy-spanning show, we get to see an array of cool vehicles, tons of new planets – including one full of Greedos – the best lightsabre battles in any medium, all in service of some exciting, character-driven adventures. The series feels nothing like the Phantom Menace and a lot like a classic Star Wars Adventure. Plus, if the idea of R2-D2 facing off with two robot that looks like IG-88 excites you – actually, if you even know what that means – then I highly recommend you watch.

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars is based on 20 or so episodes from the series. If you haven’t seen the series, I think you’ll feel a little bit lost. But the draw for the game could solely be its epic action, which is grander in scale than anything I’ve seen in any of the Lego Star Wars games before it.

I’ve captured several minutes of video from the game’s early levels so you can enjoy the spectacle. This is from the Xbox 360 version of the game. Have fun watching. I did playing through all of that.

  • Okay first off, please for your next video lay off with the text commentary a bit! I don’t need to know that you edited a clip too early. This video could have been 1/3 the size and conveyed your enthusiasm for the game much better.

To the topic itself, saying the Clone Wars was the best modern Star Wars is like saying something is the least abusive form of rape. Honestly I got the first season and tried to watch it through, but simply couldn’t. And even then I would agree that it is the best of the modern era (with great disappointment).

From playing the original Lego Star Wars, I don’t really see any true improvement in the core mechanics. Just bigger and shinier battles. Which is a pity too, since I had hopes entering this article that it would be something I could get in to.

    • Are you talking about the Attack of the clones animation that looked similar to “samurai Jack” cartoon. They were like 5min each but were amazing & followed Anakins transition. There was nothing to fault with those that stands out.

  • Epic and Clone wars CGI in the same sentence just doesn’t compute.

However Epic and the animated Clone wars cartoon does.

For me the last good Star Wars game was Jedi Knight 2 Outcast. From there its nothing but disappointment and a downhill slide as the prequels and Clone wars run the franchise into the ground.

  • If you’ll permit me to put on my Star Wars nerd cap – “new planets – including one full of Greedos” – That would be Rodia, home of Greedo’s species, the Rodians 🙂

I’m really looking forward to this one. One of my best gaming memories is a night where my best friend and I 100%’ed the first Lego Star Wars game in 1 night. And spent the next day doing our best to slice and dice each other with our lego lightsabres until one of us was declared the champion.
