Atari Revives Centipede As Post-Apocalyptic Shooter

Atari, after reviving (or attempting to revive) classic games like Warlords and Yars’ Revenge, is turning its attention to 1980 arcade classic Centipede for its next project. This is Centipede: Infestation, a twin-stick shoot ’em up for the Wii and Nintendo 3DS.

This take on Centipede is, believe it or not, a “post-apocalyptic action experience” that blends run and gun shooting with tower defence mechanics. In Centipede: Infestation, players take on the role of orphaned teenager Max, post-apocalyptically shooting giant bugs of all shapes, sizes and leg counts.

And in this Centipede, developed by Atari and WayForward Technologies, there’s apparently a deeper story than just “Shoot insects while trying to avoid death.” According to the release:

During Max’s travels he encounters a young teen named Maisy who possesses a collection of seeds that hold the secret to bringing plant life back to the wasteland. Max and Maisy join forces to grow these gardens and protect the last natural resources on earth.

You’ll be able to save this centipede-infested world when Centipede: Infestation comes to the Wii and Nintendo 3DS later this year.
