Buffy, Freddy and Machete Are Call of Duty’s New Zombie Slayers

Dropped on a mysterious, ice-covered Siberian island, Call of the Dead has players control a dream-team of zombie killers as they fight to survive an army of the Soviet undead led by the set-light wielding reanimated corpse of George Romero.

Call of the Dead, part of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Expansion pack, stars playable versions of Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Robert Englund (Nightmare on Elmstreet), Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead), and Danny Trejo (Machete).

The Call of Duty storyline is inspired by writer and director George A. Romero, who also stars in the level as himself, according to Activision. The game kicks off with players stranded on a shipload of the undead in Siberia. The gameplay here seems to show plenty of decapitations, eviscerations and movie-themed quips being dished out.

It's hard to tell what's gameplay and what's cut-scene in the trailer, but if it's all gameplay I'm catching glimpses of what appears to be a lot of new moves, weapons and attacks.

"This is Treyarch's tribute to the legendary George Romero, who truly defined the zombie genre and whose incredible work has been such an inspiration to our team," says Dave Anthony, Call of Duty: Black Ops Director. "It was an absolute honour to work with such an amazing and talented cast whose passion and energy brought their characters instantly to life.  Fans are going to love this."

Call of Dead is part of the Call of Duty: Black Ops' Escalation map pack due out on the Xbox 360 on May 3 for1200 Microsoft points. The pack also comes with four new multiplayer maps: Zoo, Hotel, Convoy and Stockpile. Check them out here in motion.

I've never really been that in to call of duty, but damn! Robert Englund! what a legend! That's almost enough to make me wanna play it right there!!

Pretty sure Buffy never/rarely tackled zombies...

    /geek

Nor did she ever use a gun... hated the things

      1. There were quite a few zombie episodes, and other mentions thereof.

      2. It's Sarah Michelle Gellar, not Buffy. Like the Simpson's episode with Lucy Lawless: "Wait a minute, Xena can't fly!" "I told you, I'm not Xena. I'm Lucy Lawless."

they should have had Bruce Campbell in there instead of Rooker

"they should have had Bruce Campbell in there instead of Rooker"

I'm sure they considered it and found that Bruce Campbell would cause balancing issues. It's like giving Ryu from Street Fighter 2 the BFG gun from Doom.

I don't own the game, but throw in Bruce and I would'a bought it in a heartbeat!

    "Machete don't text" ;p

Tribute aside, I hope they haven't abandoned the original crew, or storyline - Edward Richtofen, Maxis, Samantha, Peter, Tank, Nikolai, Gersch, etc - all the story arcs need resolution. It's what made this series superb - an eclectic, crazy storyline, script and sense of humour that shone amongst a lot of boring writing in gaming per se... Fans of Rodriguez, Tarantino, Grindhouse and slasher 70s movies will be excited, but I hope Treyarch's zombie crew haven't abandoned their original and great ideas... This looks more like Left4Dead meets vampire slaying.

I have to kill George Romero?

    Crap.
