Cliffy B Implies No Master Chief/Gears Crossover Because Microsoft Is 'Kind Of Squeamish'

Epic Games characters have appeared into other games before - Lost Planet 2, for example. The studio's willing to consider any reasonable tie-in with its own games, too, so you're not the first to wonder how awesome it'd be to have a Master Chief skin in Gears of War.

The problem, as Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski told Complex, is one of tone. "Gears is like Mortal Kombat and Halo is like Street Fighter," he said, drawing a distinction between Halo's "soft M" and the rougher edges of Gears.

If we were to get Master Chief, we'd get his model, put him in a COG suit, make it blow up, and do some test animation work. We'd have to see what his head looks like being blown to smithereens or how his arm would look getting sawed off.

Bleszinski told Complex he approached Microsoft about such a cross-over, a natural in the minds of both series' fans. "I'll let you in on a secret. I actually approached Microsoft on getting Master Chief into the game, but those guys are kind of squeamish," he said.

Evidently it all went nowhere. We're left to guess the reasons but, yeah, Chief getting mutilated might be a bit too much for his handlers.

I'm sorry, but You can't cut through shielded mojlnir armor with a chainsaw.

I assume I'm not the only person who is thinking "...." after this comment.

Right, but tapping someone on the back with your rifle is an instant kill?

      Rifle butt > Chainsaw apparently

I'd pay money to see the clean cut, boring and somewhat uninteresting Master Chief confronted with the cast of Gears.

'Holy hell! These people have personalities!
    And chainsaws!'

Then he'd run away. Like a girl.

"Oh no, Muscle McBuff, Senor Steroids, Blonde Tips McGee and I'M_BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK have come to beat us up!"

Valve characters are the only characters that have a personality in shooters.

Gordan Freeman is known for his personality huh...

I wasn't referring to Gordon Freeman.

Alyx, Eli, Dr. Kleiner, Barry. All of these characters have tendencies, allowing you to associate a personality with them, as you would a real human being.

Other characters in other games do this too, sure, but Valve characters are the only characters who are actually believable. Most games feel as if the dialogue and voice acting are viewed as a small portion of the story and atmosphere, when really, it can be the biggest. Having a companion that you can get attached to in a video game (e.g. Alyx in Half-Life 2) causes you to concentrate on, and be immersed within the story, rather than having a companion who is simply there to continue the story.

I would assume that Gabe Newell, and the scripters of Half-Life, are quite knowledgeable in psychology.

That's just Half-Life alone. Look at Left 4 Dead. It's using character appearance to first establish the concept of a personality, and the behaviour of the character to complete it. Francis, for example, has the appearance of a biker. When you hear how he talks in game, you can attach a rebellious attitude to him, ergo resembling a biker's personality (atleast a stereotypical one, anyway).

Portal 2 has Wheatley. Although, most of his personality comes from Stephen Merchant's incredible voice acting, rather than the dialogue or actions. But, in terms of actions, P2 has P-Body and Atlas, both of which don't even talk, yet still have personalities created by the ingame gestures.

When I first made my comment, I hadn't meant for it to be so literal, but after I had posted it, I read it over again, and saw that it was a little arrogant. I know there are plenty of great developers who can create characters with personalities, Atlas or Andrew Ryan in BioShock for one example. I was just implying that Valve does it best.

I'd be happy with any old Spartan, it doesn't have to be the Chief. They could of used someone from Noble Team or just made up their own Spartan. Hell they could have just stuck Marcus in some Mjolnir armour and called it a day.

But, but. . . in Gears anyone who wears a helmet meets the same fate as Carmine.

good, i don't want to see that crossover. ever.

    >Chief arrives on Sera
    >War over in a week

    What locusts?

Power armor's for pussies - Duke Nukem

Why do Gears and halo fans fight were brothers were all one in the same we serve under the Xbox Banner. and by the way Master chief would own
Marcus in a hand to hand com bat Mastercheif can punch t hr. a pure Brick wall has reflexes faster then a

Sorry punch through a brick wall reflexes faster then any man known in history has super eye sight in the dark Can jump 8 times the normal man can run 4K in 15 minutes mastercheif would own Marcus Dom Bard and Cole together with hand to hand combat easily.

I think it would be cool to see clay carmine have a Mark V or Mark VI armor for an extra costume it would be perfect since you never see any of the carmine's actual faces
