F.E.A.R. 3’s New Multiplayer Modes Urge You To Fu**king Run

When John Carpenter tells you to Fu**ing Run, you better well fu**ing run. Warner Bros Interactive details the terrifying new multiplayer modes appearing in the third instalment of the paranormal first-person shooter F.E.A.R.

The creators of F.E.A.R. 3 didn’t just tap horror masters John Carpenter (The Thing) and Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) to craft the game’s story; they’re the inspiration behind the game’s multiplayer modes as well. You can’t have a terrifying single-player experience and then just have plain old guys shooting at each other in multiplayer, now can you?

No, F.E.A.R. 3’s multiplayer modes have a flavour, and that flavour is scary. Take Fu**ing Run, for example. In this aptly named mode, a team of players must battle their way through enemy soldiers while Alma’s Wall of Death relentlessly pursues. Inspired by the cover of John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, getting engulfed in this rolling wall of fog kills a player instantly, and when all players are dead, the match ends. It’ll take teamwork to make it through, and possibly adult diaper.

Then there’s Contractions, based on Carpenter’s The Fog. An isolated squad of soldiers makes a stand against waves of enemies (including Alma herself), with each rolling in with a thickening fog bank. The further you get, the harder it is to see what’s lurking out there.

Soul Survivor is based off of Nile’ 30 Days of Night, in which vampires take out survivors in a small town one-by-one. The premise is pretty much the same here. One player begins as a corrupted, tasked with taking down his teammates one at a time. As they die, they begin corrupted as well, until it’s everyone against one terrified guy.

The final mode, Soul King, sees players playing as Spectres, possessing AI combatants and harvesting the souls of those they kill. The player with the most souls wins.

I’m all about Fu**ing Run myself. I can’t wait to hear my screams echoed back at me over the headsets of my teammates.

F.E.A.R. 3 hits the Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3 on May 24.
