Who knows, one day, indie smash hit Minecraft may need box art. If it does, this piece by Djohaal has our vote (via Something Geeky).

Grab yourself one of the nearly hundreds of texture packs available and it can look like whatever you want.

It isn’t just the lighting which makes that picture look good, it’s the fancy bumpmapping and shader effects.

Okay so maybe I haven’t seen a decent directional shadows mod yet, but give it time I reckon… gotta love a game with such an active modding community – now we just need to wait on the official mod API so each update doesn’t keep breaking things; I’ve been waiting on a new bettergrass for some time and am sorely tempted by JurassiCraft.

I would be massively supportive if the game world was actually a cube like this. I totally love the idea of digging down through the map to the other side of the map.
I guess its possibility would only really be limited to how they wrote in gravity to the game. If it is a constant or can be flipped.

It’s not just the gravity that would be the issue – the world chunks run the entire height of the map and are designed to generate almost indefinitely… not to mention the issue with parallel worlds like The Nether (and mod worlds like Aether, Atlantis and Jurassic) where there is some correlation to each others’ geography when transporting between them.
It would be interesting though if a mod world could eventually attempt the idea of a two-sided world – it could still be infinite but you’d have the interesting case of The Underside where you might burrow down enough to come up through someone’s basement or end up plummeting off into the sky by walking off the wrong ledge.
