3D. Had enough? Tough crap, it sounds like there will be more. And according to movie director James Cameron (pictured, with George Lucas), the future of 3D is being fuelled by video games.
“Video games are going to help propel the autostereoscopic (glasses-free) play because that’s going to be the entry level for most people,” Cameron tells Yahoo. “These single-viewing devices that are engaging the person to play these video games will drive a lot of investment in autostereoscopic displays for that very reason.”
Sounds like Cameron is talking about the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo’s glasses-free gaming portable.
Cameron, who is currently writing the script for Avatar 2, is also keen to do an Avatar MMO in 3D, but thinks that no matter how successful glasses-free portables and TVs are, 3D glasses won’t vanish from theatres any time soon.
“I don’t think we’ll ever get rid of the glasses in movie theatres,” says Cameron. “Not in my lifetime, anyway, but we’re going to get rid of them at home because it’s a different viewing model type.”
The reason for this, says Cameron, is that people are distracted at home. “You’re doing other things,” he continues. “You’re pausing a game or a movie and going to get pizza or whatever it is. It’s not the same very-dedicated sort of consciousness that you have in a movie theatre, so getting rid of the glasses will be a big deal.”
