Minecraft Has An Official Release Date

No longer must one play Minecraft and constantly wonder "When is this game finally going to come out?!" The mega-hit world-building indie game now has an official release date: November 11, 2011.

Markus "Notch" Persson writes on his official blog that his company, Mojang, decided on the release date for Minecraft, which has been in beta since December, at a board meeting that touched on the status and direction of the company. Notch explains the trickiness (and purpose) of attaching a release date to a game like the always-in-development Minecraft.

It's a bit tricky to really do a release for Minecraft as we keep updating it all the time. For one, the version we deem as the "full version" won't be very different at all from what the game was like a week ago, and we'll keep adding features after the release as well, so it's really more of a milestone when we finally get rid of the Beta label, and some kind of goal for us to work towards. The plan is to be open with this and try to get people to cheer us on as much as possible, but to be open with the fact that the game won't change much at the actual release day.

Notch and crew will be competing with another big game on 11/11/11, Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Yes, it is totally on.

11/11/11 [The Word of Notch]

Seeing as Mojang beat everyone in Escapist's March Madness, and that everybody has already bought the game, I wouldn't really call it competing. :P

      >The Escapist
      Doesn't mean much then

        > Your opinion
        Doesn't mean much.

Let's see some creative types model Skyrim in Minecraft!!

I don't care how good Minecraft is, not a soul is going to turn their nose up to some Elder Scrolls gaming.

Everyone thinks the Elder Scrolls series is great. I honestly can't imagine why. I played Morrowind and Oblivion and they just weren't any good. At all. Maybe I'm just spoiled for choice since I've actually played some -good- RPGs, but Minecraft? It's going to go to town on Skyrim's skinny ass.

Well don't hoard all the -good- stuff to yourself, name some titles man!

It will be good for it to drop the Beta but I always saw the release of Minecraf to be the point at which we'd start paying again. I'm sure Mojang have made plenty of money through beta sales but I don't see the game getting much more popular than it already is, I imagine their sales are only going down at this point.

There may be a bit of a jump back up after the official release, but if they want to keep making money I think they will have to move into expansion packs or DLC. I think a lot of people would resist this and see it as money grabbing, but I don't see how else they can continue to support the game.

Does having the beta mean you get the final product free? Or do you have to pay again?

Nope, as far as I know... if you've paid once, you're done.

All I know is, on 11/11/11 I won't be playing Minecraft for a while.

Jonathan is right, especially since they're just losing the beta tag and nothing new is going down.

Perfect just in time for the end of my HSC :D

    such a good day

Did you forget about Uncharted 3?

If Mojang get dragons in the game by release Skyrim will definitely be in trouble. That said, I'll probably end up playing both that day. Not sure which one will keep me immersed longer though.
