Miyamoto: Super Mario 3DS This Year?

Interviewing Japanese game developers is a strange experience. There are translators to go through, culture barriers – so when I hear that Shigeru Miyamoto promised to to do all he can “to deliver the new Mario game this year”, I want to believe. But I have my doubts.

Speaking to French site Gamesblog.fr, Miyamoto’s exact words were, “I promise to do all I can to deliver the new Mario game this year.” This doesn’t sound like any kind of guarantee to me.

On the one hand Nintendo are notoriously cagey when it comes to release dates – so when they do leak some sort of release date, it’s usually reliable. But… this is Miyamoto we’re talking about, and he tends to have a little more leeway when it comes to talking about upcoming Nintendo products.

I hope it’s true – the Nintendo 3DS really needs this title. A remake of a 12 year old game isn’t really enough to sustain the handheld at this point. A new, AAA Mario title on the 3DS would be just the ticket.
