New Skyrim Shots Feature Orcs, Cat People And The Dreaded Giant Spider

Giant spiders are a staple of fantasy role-playing games, be they pen-and-paper or console-and-controller. Bethesda shows off perhaps the most terrifying giant spider of them all in this latest batch of screens for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Kotaku didn't make it to Bethesda's recent BFG event, where Skyrim was on display for all to see, but our friends at Rock, Paper, Shotgun were there, and they can attest to the terrifying nature of the arachnid in question.

The Giant Frostbite Spider, in motion, may well be one of the most frightening things I've ever seen.

With that single sentence I begin questioning whether or not I will be purchasing this instalment of The Elder Scrolls series. I do not do well with spiders, virtual, giant or normal-sized.

Luckily the spider is only one of RPS' 20 reasons to be excited about Skyrim, and the other 19 are quite compelling. Hit up the link to read all about them.

20 Reasons To Be Excited About Skyrim [Rock, Paper, Shotgun]

I'm super excited for this game except for one thing.

"Acrobatics is gone, for instance – “who makes a character that is like ‘I am someone who doesn’t run?”"

Acrobatics was by far the funnest skill in Oblivion. It was the skill I liked most and the only one I bothered leveling to 100. I absolutely loved jumping around the world. Jumping from building to building in Bravil and jumping down huge mountains was a lot of fun. It was also a skill that greatly effected how I engaged in combat. I was all about avoiding enemies and then going in for quick strikes with my sword. Acrobatics played a big part in this. The article mentions the Skyrim devs want us to create and play the sort of character we want but it seems they've removed my ability to do just that.

Still mega excited for the game though.

Actually, the indication seems to be that acrobatics is naturally integrated into all characters, and is no longer a specific 'talent' or 'skill' or whatever, it just is. You should still be able to do these things, there'll just be a different way of getting to them.

In fact, we can probably assume that acrobatics is taken for granted. I mean, who plays a character that never jumps? They most likely removed it since the optimal way to make your character level up fast was to put the unimportant basic skills like acrobatics and athletics as your major skills and then keep running into a wall while you go do something else and come back to 25 levels of athletics. It makes sense that you'd only have skills that actually have a purpose other than simply being able to move more easily.

Now having said that, I am concerned about the fact that they seem to be removing attributes, or at least they are at the character creation portion.
It now looks that your character is determined completely by the skills you progress in during the game.
This is interesting and may work out well, but I thoroughly enjoy first creating the stats, like strength, agility, endurance, etc. then refining them over the course of the game to fit my playing style.
Now I may be wrong about the attribute exclusion, please somebody show me I am wrong, but I believe this may be a case where they have simplified the game far to much.

    Running is the althetics skill.

    ...dat spider.

Yay! No more generic, ugly characters!

I know it's completely against the game, but I'd love if I could turn off weight limits and weapons conditions.
    Other than that though...
