Sony Admits The PlayStation Network May Have Been Attacked

Earlier this week, activist group Anonymous threatened to go after Sony's online presence in retaliation for the company's legal actions against PS3 hackers. The next day, the PlayStation Network went down. Coincidence?

It may be, but then, it doesn't sound like it was, Sony today conceding the obvious and in a statement issued to GameSpot admits that it is "currently investigating [the network instability] , including the possibility of targeted behaviour of an outside party. If this is indeed caused by such act, we want to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service. Our engineers are working to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers' continued support."

Getting things back up to full speed shouldn't be too hard for Sony, as Anonymous claims to have stopped its attack on the PS3's online service, a statement on the group's website reading "We realise that targeting the PSN is not a good idea. We have therefore temporarily suspended our action, until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers."

"Anonymous is on your side, standing up for your rights. We are not aiming to attack customers of Sony. This attack is aimed solely at Sony, and we will try our best to not affect the gamers, as this would defeat the purpose of our actions. If we did inconvenience users, please know that this was not our goal."

Those Anon kids are pretty smart, how they didn't think that attacking PSN wouldn't effect Regular Joe consumers...

People have no right to act like this, these people are cowards. If they hate a corporation so much for protecting there product (in other words there livelyhood) then walk in to there office and complain to management.
Terrorists act like this and they are contradicting there cause by hurting the people they "are fighting for" these hacker idiots are the same league of stupid...

but there not even fighting for you or me unless your a pirate that is.

Considering it was Geohot and the like who got the Other OS feature removed in the first place because they abused it.

Then when they put it back in and made things even worse they wonder why sony kicked up a stink.

If they wanted to actually use the Other OS as its intended use they should have taken sony to court. Sure it could have been expensive but it actually has a chance of working.

Instead of being idiotic like this.

while I will agree with you in that the people doing such things are cowards, they are NOT hackers.
A DDoS attack is NOT hacking! It requires no skill and achieves nothing but destructive outcomes.
Hackers seek knowledge and freedom, not destruction.
People DDoS-ing are just morons with a horrendously incorrect world view and a bit too much time on their hands.
And the "terrorist" comment? Suffice to say that what you put across is that you, Adrian Milano, see fit to put slightly disrupted online gaming service on par with the slaughter of innocent civilians.
      *slow clap*

Terrorist Attacks aren't confined to a bodycount number, etc. There are many incarnations of "terrorist" activity.

I would suggest that these attacks certainly fit into this category.

I am not someone who agrees with anonymous or sony on this matter, but in this particular case I don't think walking up to sony's offices and complaining that you can't jailbreak their system will do anything.

Nor will complaining that you disagree with sony's actions against those who do. Both parties are acting like children.

Agreed, clearly complaining didn't do anything as hundreds if not thousands already have complained, and Sony didn't care. They only care about their bottom line and their actions aren't affecting that enough for it to be a problem.

Anonymous is trying to get noticed by taking down services in the hope of getting noticed, but in the end it's a futile attempt as Sony is not going to let up because of threats.

Meh these guys should just roll over and wank into their bedsheets like the jerk offs they are.

That made me laugh more than it has any right to

I didn't feel like they were on my side when I wasn't able to connect to PSN. Cockheads

Ahahahaha MSS...that man was fucking hilarious.

“We realise that targeting the PSN is not a good idea. We have therefore temporarily suspended our action, until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers.”

Bunch of idiots. I doesn't take a degree in rocket surgery to work this out.

Just shows the type of people they are.... idiots

    Anon are just dead-set wankers.

They need to get real lives, real jobs, real girlfriends.

"If we did inconvenience users, please know that this was not our goal."

So your goal was not to inconvenience users, even though you did something (allegedly, and let's not forget you're taking credit for it) that was guaranteed to inconvenience users?

I thought hackers were supposed to be intelligent.

It's wienie little girls (actually little girls act better then this) like this that make people take drastic measures like this. Anonymous just needs to stoop trying to be the "hero" no one wants. As for Mr. Hotz he's just being a prick. It's his fault other OS was removed, his fault for what he's in now, and when Sony's Experia phone comes out and gets hacked it'll also be his fault (Hotz mentioned he wanted to get an Experia an hack it). Both Anonymous and Mr. Hotz come from the cesspool that is 4chan and are only doing all this shit to appeal to those said people.

      More like an hero, amirite?

You guys are extremely narrow minded. Your failure to grasp the larger implications of what is at stake in this matter belies your own ignorance . Further more, the insistence on commenting about something you fail to even understand is both arrogant and irresponsible. They are us, we are them. ANONYMOUS FOREVER.
