Surprise, A Mass Effect MMO 'Totally Makes Sense'

In an interview in the latest issue of Game Informer magazine, BioWare's Casey Hudson talks about the future of his studio and the Mass Effect franchise now that the third RPG title is on its way.

One very natural topic of conversation is multiplayer. "We haven't yet come up with a way to do that, so we don't have anything to announce at this time," he says. "But, obviously, multiplayer is something we want to do more of in the future as a company."

Another? Massively multiplayer online games.

"A lot of people say that they want to see an MMO, I think that kind of makes sense for this universe", Hudson told the mag. "I think Mass Effect has that quality to it. If you get rid of the Reapers and win that, wouldn't it be amazing to just live on the Citadel or just take a ship to Omega? That makes sense."

It does. And while this kind of chit-chat is just that, chit-chat, now that Mass Effect is well established as a "brand" in the market you'd be surprised if publishers EA didn't want to release more games based on it.

And given that Bioware will already have half the code written (Star Wars Old Republic MMO), it DOES suddenly make cents (or more accurately, dollars).

I hope not. Yet another good single player game sacrificed to MMO status for the lure of sweet, sweet cash would be disheartening.

You're right...if they were just cashing in the franchise to make money then yes an MMO would be terrible. But if it was done right....holy krogan!!!
In my mind this would have to be the second best franchise ever to make an MMO out of...Star Wars being the first. If Bioware can prove themselves on Old Republic then I am completely happy for them to make a Mass Effect MMO.

We need to send the message out there that single player is OK. Playing alone is OK. You aren't social degenrate if you take some time for yourself.

I'm not sure if this is the right direction for mass effect. When I think of the upcomming KOTOR MMO I can't help thinking it looks fun, but I what I really want is another single player KOTOR. I wonder how many people feel the same way?
Don't get me wrong I have been playing MMO's for years but I just feel some games function better as single player games

Yeah same. The day that bioware announced that There would be no KOTOR3, rather an MMO based on KOTOR was the worst gaming day of my life. I'd been waiting for KOTOR 3 for so goddamn long, cause I felt they never really finished the Reven/Exile story, and setting the MMO 300 years later dosesn't do the first two games justice.

i hear ya. very sad indeed.

there are so many opportunities for excellent SP games in the SW universe. I've always wanted a game that explores the origins of the jedi, and the original split, myself.

I wish they were releasing a Mass Effect mmo later this year instead of a Star Wars one. The ME universe is far more interesting to me. At least I can hold on to the hope that they may one day make one.

They should wait and see if their star wars MMO is successful before committing resources to a project like this.

I think they are assuming that because it is star wars it is garunteed to succeed. I'm not trying to be overly negative here, but personally I haven't been able to get excited about Old Republic - trailers just make ti look like more of the same to me :(

A quick scan over some forums, I think the reaction this this is mixed from fans.

One problem, assuming the majority of ME fans are playing the game on the Xbox360, does this mean it would be a console based MMO? We know how they fair... I'm squarely in the Mass Effect SP game only camp.

bioware cash grabbing?... no way would they do this!

did i mention MASS EFFECT 2 is out for ps3 now =D!

But a MMO of mass effect is just damn right the dumbest idea. Don't ruin a good universe

More opportunities to explore a vast universe in terms of lore and space? Yes, please.

and the MMO will take place (hundreds of) years in the past when mankind just started venturing out in space? Or in the midst of the arachni war and krogan uprising?

Mass Effect: The Soldier of the Old Federation..............................

Though id rather if they first release an XCOM like game within the Mass Effect Lore/Plot.

The games setting and premise would fit very nicely into an mmo if done correctly (Which I have no doubt Bioware could do). However, no matter how good an mmo it is, it will attract the mmo community tyypes to it, which always manages to ruin any type of immersion, which is key in this this IP.

It might be hard for players to transition from their self created hero to a "generic nobody" in the same universe.
However, if done well, it may prove to be a fantastic experience - and somehow they can incorporate the previous ME player's Shepard into to storyline as-is.

Nonono, you don't get rid of the Reapers AND you let us live on the Citadel. I'm Commander Shephard and that's my favorite MMO on the Citadel.
