Why We Can’t Be Pokémon Bad Guys

In Pocket Monsters, “Team Rocket” is fairly harmless organised crime unit that steals, sells and captures rare and powerful Pokémon. The Team Rocket characters are typically comical, but surely, the concept of dealing in stolen Pocket Monsters is prime grist for a game.

It might be! That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, though. When asked if there would ever be a Team Rocket game, Pokémon director Junichi Masuda replied, “That’s a difficult question to answer. But when you think about Team Rocket, while they’re quite comical, they’re still bad guys when they try to steal other trainers’ Pokémon.”

“Imagine watching football on TV, for example – you want them to play fair,” added Masuda. “I want players to play as heroes in video games, and I want them to play fair.”

No, what isn’t fair is that arbitrary view of good and evil. This is like if filmmakers who made Westerners never decided to make flicks with anti-heroes. We’d be out all those awesome Clint Eastwood movies. Instead, we’re out cool Pokémon games in which we can steal others’ monsters and sell them on the black market.
