X Rebirth May Be The Sexiest Looking Space Sim Of 2011

Granted, I'd be hard pressed to list many of this year's hardcore space sim contenders, but the newly revealed X Rebirth - the latest in Egosoft's 12-year-old X series - is going to have a hard time being visually out-sexed. This is a gorgeous game.

Publisher Deep Silver labels X Rebirth "a fresh beginning" for the series, one that will try to appeal to new fans while also offering the depth X space sim fans demand. Specifically, Deep Silver and Egosoft promise "action-packed space combat, detailed trading mechanics and high-speed space exploration with fast travel", if that sounds like your cup of space tea.

X Rebirth is due in the fourth quarter of this year for PCs.

Check out the debut trailer and first screen shots in the gallery above, see if this X appeals to you, whether you're a new fan or old.

Awesome news - I love the X series, actually imported the first one from the US for $150 back in the day because I could not find it locally...

Yeah I tried getting into X recently. I was really impressed by its depth, but also put off by it. Its a tough game to get into I found. I'll probably give it a go again when this comes out.

I had the same problem, I've probably put dozens of hours into X3 but I barely scratched the surface of the gameplay, most of it was spent trading, I barely did any combat.

I can't wait for this new title to come out as I am hopeful it will cater to newbies a little better while still containing all the great gameplay of the X series. I honestly think it probably has the greatest system of trading, building, combat and side missions of any 'trading' style game I have ever played.

The trick is to get Reuinion, and do the station missions (any station with an icon). If you get lucky and recieve some simple defense missions, they can net you 200k for doing almost nothing.

If you trade from the very start it can be quite boring.

I keep telling myself I should really play the X series, then I remember the game would be a bigger time sink than a Civ game. :( But each time one is released that little itch comes back. :P

I hope they do away with the blocky four corner sectors and make it a bit more realistic in that regard. That's my main gripe with the series... that and the fact its very hard to get into.

I'd love to see a Freelancer 2, personally.

Ditto, Freelancer 2 deserves to be released, but i think the reason it was canned is because micro$oft found bungie, i mean, i love halo, but canning a game on a hunch isn't a good idea.

also, is this game going to be anything like Freelancer? whenever i see "sim" in an article i think retards that cant speak

Between this, BF3 and Skyrim and ill probably die as i already have no life as it is xD. I actually sent this in last night to mark because i honestly didnt expect an american media site to post about a european game that wasnt owned by a US company.

This just looks like every Eve Online trailer ever released. Granted with a tiny splash more color.

LOL. Did anybody notice the text at the bottom right hand side in the 3rd picture? (the very Blue one)

Are we still going to be stuck in the cockpit for the entire game? Fans would like to walk about on the stations and visit a bar, and do an alien babe in between missions. And why can't we land on planets and rob high security banks for some credits? And remember the zero-gravity flight combat - watching your ship bank left or bank right, only to gently glide back to the third person defalt view? Opps, sorry. I must have been thinking of Free Lancer. For crying out loud, yes I love great graphics, but come on guys! Game play sells games, and makes gamers happy too!

Me again, I lost my connection so I tetherd my PC to my smart phone. So here again is my comment:

I wasn't interested in X, but I sure am now.

Ooh very sexy indeed. Hopefully the game will be as good as the screenshots. 2 and 3 were awesome once I finally figured out that a joystick was really essential to fly properly, after that I built a vast trading empire on half inched pirate freighters. Sadly in 2 I did it in Presidents End before really exploring the story, that was an expensive mistake

Can I have a "hell yeah"? Here I was thinking that the series was over with X3: Terran Conflict, but now the greatest 4X (X-plore, X-pand, X-ploit, X-terminate, or as this series has it, "trade, fight, build, think") series of all time is actually getting an X4!

Hopefully Egosoft will actually release it in a completed state with adequate manual this time.

Nice - I had a lot of trouble getting into X. Its a different genre of space sims - if you're ok with heavy trading and some such. Unfortunately - I come from a fanatic Freespace2 Freelancer background - and just could not play X after the initial few hours.

It would be unrealistic to expect them to reduce the formula they've used for the entire X series.

I do hope they come up with Freelancer 2 - like someone else suggested. Curse you Microsoft - for cancelling Freelancer 2!!!

The X Series is great, but it still falls short compared to so many of these old greats! There's a reason I know more star wars quotes than women...

    LOL FPS: 14.4!

    Just make it more User-Friendly.

Every time I delete stuff off my HD to make room I always leave X3TC there in the hopes that I will get back into it, but logging back in after several months of not playing I really have no idea what I'm doing and have no desire to wade through dozens of laggy menus to find out.

I love the X-series of games, but one thing remains un-tapped.

    MULTIPLAYER.

or, more specifically, a co-op mode. We live in a time when MMOs are starting to really catch on. WoW, SWTOR, EVE online--and even co-op in HALO, are starting to become part of the public understanding of what it means to play games. Social networks are everywhere, and space sim-gamers are ready to use X-series' incredible graphics and gameplay with each other. There's nothing i'd like more than to have 1 or more people with me accomplishing some of the more difficult in-game objectives as a team. this was possible in the XvT days, when my friends and i would take on star destroyers in our x-wings over modem connections; why can't we have a much fuller, more social version of that now? We're on the cusp of something big, but no one has tapped into it yet. I'd love to see that in this game!

    Multiplayer: No. Just, no.

This isn't that kind of game, nor should it be.

    Three(ish) words: Freelancer-style planets.

X3 is fun, but the universe is so /dead/ and lonely. Freelancer-style planets would take little work to implement and make such a drastic difference in the game's atmosphere.
