Will anyone be shocked when there is 90+% support for the R18+ classification and the ACL will accuse us of manipulating the poll?
-
Aidan
To be fair they’ll probably run their own manipulation in reverse.
Email scare campaigns to their members have been effective at making heaps of submissions to review boards and commissions.

Done.
Regardless of my own belief that none of this will make a difference, I have to say there’s been some activity on this issue this week that’s for sure.

I said I supported an R18+ rating but no the guidelines…
then said
Video game classification needs to be self regulated. With the industry always evolving, statutory laws and regulations are unable to keep up, especially with the speed in which changes are made with government institutions.
Did I do a naughty?

Done, for what good it’ll do because these survey’s have all been done before. Waving thousands of signatures and debunking the myths surrounding video game violence time and time again does little when there’s an idiot with power on the throne.

Tom
Will they publish the results of this survey, or will they only be available to the SCAG members? I’d love to see the figures..
Done. 🙂

The government is using Survey Monkey?
Got a link from an official government website? This could be a scam to farm email addresses?
-
Derris
definitely looks phishy to me. the australian government surely have the IT infrastructure to be able to host an online survey on their own servers rather than using surveymonkey
-
Corteks
LoL, you give the government a lot of credit! They can’t even host a site to change your address details properly!
What do I mean by that? Well they have this site
http://www.lifeevents.wa.gov.au/LE-new_homepage.htmlThat I’ve used before, then found out down the track when I went to vote that oh, nope that didn’t work. Too bad, it’s not our fault when the site fails completely.

Done.
Additional comment: Let’s just get this thing done already and stop minority religious groups from derailing natural societal progression in this country.

It part of our freedoms as a proud democratic nation to have the choice, the option to play what we wish, if this legislation is not passed, its an infringement on our rights.
Voted R18+

It looked a bit fishy to me too, but there’s a link from the actual classifications.gov.au site: http://www.classification.gov.au/www/cob/classification.nsf/Page/InformationCentre_ProposeddraftGuidelinesforR18+ComputerGames

Plenty of federal departments use survey monkey, the cost of setting up a similar service on demand through the IT contractor is generally a lot higher and would take a lot longer to get up and running (wheels of business).

It’s an official survey just hosted using that site, it’s linked from the classification website.
Please guys, take a minute of your time to do this, it literally takes no time at all.

OK so first I fixed my internet, than I read the document…
I know it’s a draft, but it seems to internally inconsistant. Now I have a few problems with it, but it does seem to be working towards an Australia where I don’t need to import Mortal Kombat.
I considered how these classifications would impact games currant and banned. In a way I see them being able to ban more games.
Take the Classic Carmageddon:
From the RC listing
Gratuitous, exploitative or offensive depictions of:
(i) violence with a very high degree of impact or which are excessively frequent, prolonged or detailed;
I run people over to get more time, and let’s not forget the Electo bastard pedestrian ray.
I’m running over or electrocuting people by the hundreds, am I the only person who decided to spend a whole level trying to kill every single pedestrian?
Same statement, new game, Mortal Kombat. It’s essentially a fight to the death, you get in depth gruesome bone breaker combo’s and chances are you will execute the loser. Killing the defeated guy is very gratutious.
I think this New R18+ seems to be what the old MA15+ was.

I wrote as my comment:
I support the proposed reforms to the classification of computer games within Australia. The existing system is outdated and serves neither the rights of adults or its aim of protecting the young.
The implementation of an R18+ rating will allow for the release of appropriate adult games and send a clear message to parents that some games are completely inappropriate for young people.
it will also reduce incidencts of ‘content shaving’ where an innapropriate product which would be rated R18+ in other jurisdictions has the minimal amount of content removed and is shoehorned into an MA15+ rating.
I hope that common sense will prevail and the policial will can be found to finally act on this matter.

DEFINITELY. It seems nonsensical to allow R18+ film, tv and others and yet when it comes to games, we deny it. TV and Film probably have a MUCH greater influence on youth anyway (if that’s what we’re worried about) and the point on R18+ is that we are RESTRICTING the purchase and use of it to people who are meant to be mature enough to handle the content.

I wrote this:
We should have had this years ago. We need to bump the ratings on current MA15+ video games that include excessive simulated violence and enforce it vigorously. It’s common sense to acknowledge that the vast majority of people younger than 18 are not fully capable of understanding or handling excessive exposure to graphic content. -

I voted for R18 but not the guidelines with the following comment:
“Sex as a reward should be acceptable in M15+. Many games reward violence as a means to progress in a game. Violence in society is not acceptable, but sex is. Why is sex being treated as taboo?
Drug use as a reward should be acceptable in M15+ when it is in context and clearly not a promotion for illegal activity. For example, a game that offers the reward of more life when taking morphine. Fallout 3 was RC until they renamed “morphine” to “medkit”–that should not have been required when it was blatantly obvious the game was not promoting illegal drug use.”
